2010: Round 1 vs Melbourne

Great start to the season by Osborne. Opened the scoring for the Hawks, taking the ball on the wing and running to the 50, where he drilled the ball straight between the big posts. Ozzie added another goal during the rest of the match and it made for a fine opening game for 2010, after a patchy 2009. Osborne finished the match with 5 frees against his name, indicative of the tougher attitude that Hawthorn is taking against the opposition, and the football, in the upcoming season.

2010: Round 2 vs Geelong

A real mixed bag from Osborne in round two. Didn't really get enough of the ball, but did put in an early effort for goal of the year. Receiving the ball in the forward pocket and dribbling it through with a curving bouncing kick, was the highlight of the day for Ozzie. The low light would have to be Osborne being charged with making forceful front-on high contact to Joel Selwood in the final term. He accepted the one match ban and will be available again in round 4. Earlier in the game, Matthew Scarlett was charged with kneeing Osborne in the groin. Give some... get some.

2010: Round 4 vs Collingwood

Pretty average performance by Osborne and by the entire Hawthorn team. Didn't get a lot of the ball and didn't do a lot when he got it. Expecting better things next in round 5.

2010: Round 5 vs Kangaroos

Another average day by Osborne and Hawthorn. Pretty much same old, same old in a display that was pretty bloody average and should he should be starting to get a little worried about his place in the side. Ozzie so needs to lift against Essendon in round 6, otherwise he might come under question. Has enough credits in the bank, but now has the games and experience to lead the way when things are grim. Got one hit out in round 5, but then again, who didn't?! The supporter in row B, seat 25, also was forced to go into the ruck with Hawthorn's ruck options.

2010: Round 6 vs Collingwood

Yet another average performance from Osborne. Opened the scoring for the Hawks, but was pretty much uninspiring from that point on.

Normally I'd put this down to playing hard, unsocial football. However, this has been far from the case of year.
 
Dropped for round 7... and deservedly so. Needs to discover the form of where he looks a like a desperate, hard nut footballer, that he has been in the past.

A few weeks off will give Osborne a chance to put in the hard yards or to pull out the hairspray and foundation and concentrate on his modeling.

As it was, Osborne played no football for any team in Round 7. Rested.
 
Round 8: Played for Box Hill vs Port Melbourne

Played for Box Hill vs Port Melbourne. Kicked 2 goals and amongst the best. Possibly pushing for senior selection in round 9, but might be tough. Spots could be limited if Hawthorn put in a half decent show versus Richmond.

Might be time to get use to the Magoo's and string a few together.
 
2010: Round 9 vs Carlton. The penny has finally dropped

After Hawthorn's shaky win against the Tigers, changes needed to be made and Osborne was called back into the team. With a week off and then a week at Box Hill, it looks like Osborne is back in town. He opened the scoring, with a cracking goal from the 50 meter line, which sailed right through the middle. Coincidence or great planning, but this is the third time this season where Osborne has been left alone on the right flank to open the scoring for the Hawks. Great stuff.

Cracking pressure from Osborne all day led to multiple free kicks, interceptions and turn overs from the opposition. His tackling was as fierce as it was in 2008 and his ball use and skills were at elite level. Osborne capped off a great day with a classic small forwards goal off the pack at the start of the second 3rd quarter, and although he was a little quieter in the second half he'd really done the job. Six inside 50's, 5 tackles and 2 goals were a great return for the champ.

2010: Round 10 vs Sydney.

In another improving display, the small utility backed up his good form with another handy game against the Swans. Osborne is now getting more of the ball and starting to present himself in dangerous positions on the ground for the team to take advantage of. Free kick against count remains high, but with the pressure he is applying it's understandable as opposed to the soft free kicks he was giving away 4-6 weeks ago. Great stuff.

2010: Round 11 vs Port Adelaide - A world cup special

Another gritty performance to show that Osborne is clearly one of the barometers at Hawthorn. With loads of pressure on the ball carrier and creating opportunities from by being in dangerous positions all over the forward half of the ground, Ozzie earned his first goal for Hawthorn by harassing and chasing in the forward 50 till he got a free kick, directly in front. Osborne's second goal came from a classic mark, nearly directly in front. With Sewell drilling a stab pass towards Osborne, but missing by a few metres, Ozzie had to soar sideways through the air to snag a great mark. With only 4 minutes on the clock, Osborne steered through the sealer to complete a great game.

2010: Round 17 vs St Kilda When Statistics lie

Sometimes stats don't tell the full story of what unfolds in a game. In
probably his finest game for the season, Osborne played a forward defensive role of St Kilda's rebounding backman Sam Gilbert. Gilbert usually streams off the backline, setting up forward plays for the Saints, but was kept quiet by a great tagging job by the Ozzie. Also, with two crucial goals in the game, our lad did everything he could to give us a great chance to win. A drawn game was a fitting, yet unfortunate result in a cracking match.

Michael played the first 3 rounds of season 2011 before copping an injury in the Richmond game and being subbed off and not being able to overcome for the round 4 clash against West Coast in Tasmania.

Round 3 win against Richmond at the MCG.

* Interesting. Has Ozzie changed his style in 2011? Up until this season the free kick count was 60% awarded against Ozzie yet this year he has reversed that trend. Is that because of the Hawks employing a former top field umpire during the pre season? Is Ozzie under instructions to keep the ball in our forward line and not give away silly free kicks?

Be interesting to see if this trend continues.
 
Season 2011.

Michael's good form continues especially in the absence of Lance (Buddy) Franklin for the round 11 clash against Fremantle at the M.C.G.

In the last quarter that the Hawks overrun the Dockers and Osborne's 2 goals helped.

The first was a set shot and the second a beautiful bouncing kick from the boundary that curled into the goals.

In his 143th game for the Hawks he got 14 kicks, 4 marks, 9 handballs, kicked 2 goals 2 behinds and laid 3 tackles and gave away 1 free.

Has played 7 games for the Hawks this season. Started the first 3 then out till round 8 when he returned against St Kilda.

Has kicked 8 goals 4 behinds to date this season.
 
Congratulations to Michael Osborne on playing his 150th Game for Hawthorn against Fremantle in the Round 19 Clash at Subiaco Oval on Saturday 30th July, 2011.

Michael managed to kick 1 goal 2 behinds for the game in which the Hawks won.

That goal means he has now kicked exactly 100 goals for the Hawks.

“The Barometer”

Once a much maligned player with discipline issues, Michael Osborne resurrected his career as a dangerous forward after spending his formative years as a niggling back pocket. A key component of the Hawks 2008 Premiership success, a strong game from Ozzie inevitably sees the Hawks as a hard team to beat. Whether he is kicking freaky snap goals or attempting mark of the year, when he is on song he provides the Hawks forward line with another dimension that makes them almost impossible to counter.

The biggest issue for Ozzie in 2011 was producing his best often enough and now approaching his 30th birthday will find his place in the team come under increasing pressure. With the likes of Bruest, Whitecross and Puopolo establishing themselves, and the recruitment of Gunston from the Crows, positions in the dangerous Hawks forward line are being competitively sought after and Ozzie has his work cut out to maintain his position.

2012 shapes as a big year for Osborne. With the Hawks threatening to challenge again, Ozzie could play a major role if he rises to the challenge presented by his younger teammates. He has tenacity and mongrel in spades and is close to the best shot for the goal in the team. A 30 plus goal year with consistent contributions should be his aim and combined with the names of Franklin, Roughead, Gunston, Bruest, Rioli, Hodge, Burgoyne, Puopolo and others, Osborne should form a part of the most lethal forward combination in the AFL. The Barometer – a great kick, a great mark and a fierce competitor. When he’s on, the Hawks rarely look better. Let’s hope 2012 is a big one for Michael Osborne.
