Re: Michael Rischitelli

Admirable to hear a player not blame the extreme weather for our gobsmacking loss in Geelong and to give credit where it is due.

There are absolutely no excuses for what happened against the Cats. They were fantastic and we were non-competitive. We spoke about the game earlier in the week and all agreed that it was unacceptable.
Although we were disappointed with our own effort, all credit must go to the Geelong side who were just awesome. It seems they are really determined to make up for last year’s shock loss to Hawthorn in the Grand Final.

After a relatively solid start to the season, we now have to work to win back some of the respect that was lost from our 93-point defeat.

That begins this Saturday night when we take on the Bombers at the Gabba.

Whether it’s raining, clear, windy or balmy – our home crowd can expect a much better effort from the Lions this week.

Am so looking forward to the game on Saturday night and judging by his Den Diary we can expect big things from Rischitelli of which we all know he is capable.

Re: Michael Rischitelli

Has improved in the last two weeks, in that he is getting back to having more of an impact out of the middle. When Rischitelli is at his best, he is usually in amongst the action at the centre square and either getting in amongst the clearances, or getting on the end of a handball from under the pack and running forward with the ball and kicking inside 50m. He's got back to the sort of thing in the last two weeks and has had a positive impact on games.

Perhaps it's been the improved performances of Sherman and Polkinghorne as small forwards that have released Rischitelli back into the midfield, to get back to playing this sort of football.

Rischitelli's forward planning
By Michael Whiting
7:55 AM Wed 24 June, 2009

MICHAEL Rischitelli is in his sixth year at the Brisbane Lions and is more desperate than ever to break his finals duck.
Rischitelli, 23, has played less minutes in his treasured midfield role in 2009 but he said he was enjoying his time in the forward line, particularly while the Lions were winning.
Since being drafted at No.61 in 2003, the hard-nosed ball winner watched his teammates make the 2004 decider but hasn’t tasted finals action himself since establishing his place in the team.
He now has 77 games under his belt – but none in September.
“I’ve never played finals and I really want to. I thought last year we’d get there but it didn’t happen,” he said.
“Every year you don’t play finals you see other players and think ‘Geez, I’d love to be out there’.
“It makes you more hungry. You have to come back to training earlier and it makes for some pretty long pre-seasons.
“Lots of guys haven’t played finals and we want to start something new here.”
Like a number of Lions this season, Rischitelli has had to sacrifice his role somewhat in order to achieve team success.
More noted as a midfielder, Lions coach Michael Voss has moved the versatile Keilor junior into the front half.
And Rischitelli has not let his coach down.
While averaging 15 possessions and a telling five tackles per game, Rischitelli brings more than raw statistics to the Lions.
He brings a chasing and defensive presence that is not lost on those in the know.
“It’s a team sport and if that implies my role is to go forward, that’s fine by me,” he said.
“There’s plenty of different stats in footy and once we get our plan and what we want to work on in place, you tend not to look at stats too much.
“It’s (chasing) not a stat that anyone takes down, but it’s in-house and it gets noted and that’s what counts. We need opposition backmen to be under pressure.
“We also have guys like Albert Proud and James Polkinghorne and they are good on the lead and good at that pressure. They have both bases covered, which you need because you don’t always get it served to you on a plate.”
Rischitelli said he was happy to be playing anywhere in a winning team and while his forward line skills were developing, he emphasised that he was “no Jonathan Brown or Gary Ablett yet”.
On a team front, Rischitelli said the Lions were wary of last season’s fade-out, which saw them drop from 7-5 after 12 rounds to wind up in 10th position.
“Last year we slipped up so our training has to be better and our foot skills have to be better and the onus is on us and we need to step up,” he said.
“We’re all looking forward to it.”
And for any Lions fans worried the boy from Melbourne was getting homesick and might return home, he’s more than happy north of the border.
“The weather is great, it’s real laid back and it’s not as overwhelming as Melbourne can be, being a footy fanatic city,” he said.
“The coaches and the team are great.”

Re: Michael Rischitelli

Yeah I agree with acuguy, no offense to the lad but he just doesn't have good kicking and I hope he works on it during the preseason cause he is a weapon with his hardness at the ball and tackling. He is just not a matchwinner at this stage.

Re: Michael Rischitelli

This is a bloke who by now should be an automatic selection, more or less a veteran. Instead, he exists on the fringes.

No-one doubts his hardness and endeavour, but let's face it his disposal is woeful. Should have nailed that kick for goal in the last quarter, but as per missed badly. Seldom "lifts the head" as the expression goes, and mostly bombs high and wild.

Surrounded by some of the best role models going around in Power and Black, but has not progressed.

Will certainly be overtaken by those more talented unless he lifts his game. An underachiever or is this as good as it gets?

Probably the latter in my opinion. Was a speculative late draft pick, so there were obviously perceived weaknesses in his game.

The question is, do we offload every player who doesn't become exceptional at what they do. I think we'd struggle to field a team with that approach.

If he gets overtaken, so be it.

Re: Michael Rischitelli

Rischitelli frustrates me, partly because he seemed a bit of a development player early in his career, and I was expecting to be rewarded with some quality by this time. But it hasn't happened and I now don't think it ever will.

Re: Michael Rischitelli

I actually thought he was one who could hold his head up for the his efforts against the Bombers. (Permission to change my mind once I see the stats upheld !). I dont think he will ever be the out and out gun All-Australian midfielder he was tipped to be, but I do think he plays a valuable role within the structure of the side.

Rischitelli could be a gun extractor of the footy. I think he definitely doesn't get to enough contests. I wonder what his endurance ability is like. I think there is a real weakness in his ability to gut run. I have said it before but i think Jobe Watson is a fair comparison as a like for like footballer. Watson just wants it more.

The order of the draft is just speculative, something isn't clicking for Rischi, he would be disappointed with his output. I see him as trade bait.

Re: Michael Rischitelli

I think Rischitelli has been playing below average for quite a number of weeks. His game against Hawthorn in round 12, especially his second half, was fantastic, with his clearances helping win us the game. But his good games are few and far between, and in the meantime he doesn't seem to be adding a lot to the team.

There's no doubt that he has not progressed as far as everyone had hoped he would, but you still need good honest aggressive players in your team. But I have been watching him closely for a while now - he can barely run and struggles to keep up with his opponent (at least two of his marks in the forward 50 in the last quarter vs. Essendon were the direct result of him not being able to chase his opponent and the ball luckily being turned over). I have also seen him not go in to a number of contests recently, ones that you would expect a 'tough' Rischitelli to fight for.

I wonder if he isn't carrying an injury or two?

At the moment the coaches need to stop playing him in the centre after a goal - he is too slow and he is far too flat footed / waiting for others to get the clearance.

The Lions did not want to speak publicly about the matter yesterday, but it is understood Rischitelli did not have any ill-effects from the incident.

Re: Michael Rischitelli

Finger went near the eye, but there was no gouging. All his effort was in his thumb which looked like he was trying to 'twist' into his ear. Certainly very strange turn of events.

Re: Michael Rischitelli

Poor Riska.

Brent Staker has pretty much become synonymous as "the guy who Barry Hall knocked out".

I hope Riska doesn't become known mainly for this sordid incident. He deserves better.

Re: Michael Rischitelli

Is he any good. A few years ago he looked like he was going to be a star. What is the (honest) view of you guys? Has he kicked on since 2006?

Re: Michael Rischitelli

Has he kicked on since 2006?

No. Which is basically why he his disappointed so many. Matthews pegged him as a potential future all-Australian a few years ago and he stagnated from there.

He was a very late draft pick and will never be a star.

Teams need footsoldiers though, and Rischa can play a role.

So are you glad to be rid of him or did you think that he had an important part to play in your future. From the sounds of it, he was a fringe player?

it's strange that rischa isn't comfortable about going back to melbourne. maybe brisbane isn't such a bad place.

He finished equal 11th in the B&F and 'will never be a star' does not mean a spud. Poor post Blues Man:thumbsd:

Pathetic troll, nothing more.

If you want to discuss comments I ACTUALLY made, let me know.

Maybe now Riska will be known as the guy who had the courage to stick by his guns by refusing to leave the Lions.
