Just finished watching the Michael Voss interview on Open Mike. For a guy that dribbles a lot of crap on his footy show and in his top 50, he is a surprisingly good interviewer.

For those that didn't watch it, it covered his time as a player and a coach. He discussed his sacking and handled it with class. He completely owned his mistakes made with the Fevola recruitment and the treatment of Daniel Bradshaw and how it changed the way he managed and communicated with people and players. He also expressed his desire to get back involved in the all consuming environment of an AFL club again. His one proviso was being part of a set up that had everyone pulling in the same direction.

He will be at another AFL club next season. I have no doubt about that. I would like to see him as part of the RFC coaching team next season (as an assistant). I think he would add a great deal and despite the early season results, I think the RFC are pulling in the same direction. I'm confident we still will be at the end of the year. I think losing Leppa has weakened our coaching stucture. I think Voss will strengthen it and hopefully make it stronger than ever.

Please lets not turn this into a Hardwick hate thread. I'm pretty sure there's enough threads for that. More interested in peoples thoughts on the merit of bringing a guy like Voss into our coaching setup next year.

Was a great player who played hard and on instinct. I know the cattle were a little thin under voss as coach but I didn't find him a great strategist. Not sure why great past players necessarily make good coaches?

Biggest problem with Vossy from the outset even prior to coach IMO was at his youthful age too idealistic, egotistic in terms of communication and came across as self-righteous in media prior to coaching role. I think he is starting to mellow and be more circumspect from experience.

The only initial role I would entertain would be assistant coach in the midfield area atm. To me Leigh Mathews like Brereton and Dunstall are not fools. If you can pick up a bit of that from Vossy's relationship with Leigh plus his midfield acumen could be a win short and long term.

Is Vossy the smartest tool in the shed? Tough and hard yes but smart? Not sure, too far away to tell but would have to be checked out/assessed.

Great to see a person who was playing in the same era as Hird and Buckley , being so honest and taking responsibility for their actions and without trying to shaft someone else .
Hehe :D

Has terrible people skills. Barely spoke to any of the younger players. Hence why so many left/wanted to leave.

You might have a point if true. Would explain a few things. Perhaps Voss could grow into a assistant role and develop himself as well. Not prepared to write him off just yet but from afar I can't make a proper call.

I wouldn't mind seeing Voss at the RFC. As a Cap't of that team he must have had some ability to motivate/inspire his players and that would be a good thing as an assistant and if his apprenticeship was served at the BL. I think it would be an improvement on our current crop of coaches. But I back the clubs decisions on assistance...perhaps a change is needed, but if the club is wanting to go out & recruit someone and take their time (as opposed to a knee jerk after Leppa going) I'm all for it...

Wasn't there an article saying he made recommendations to the board regarding better resources for the team with an emphasis on developing the new recruits in order to increase the likelihood of keeping them at the lions & avoiding their departure ? (maybe with greater human resources he may have been able to give more time to communication ??), I'm just guessing though TBH....

He actually spoke of that in the Open Mike interview pretty much word for word.

Is there a link johnno77 ?? I woudn't mind having a bit of a look if possible, cheers :thumbsu:

I think Voss could be a good assistant coach.

The reason I think this is that coaches learn and develop, just like players. Voss has lived through a powerful "learning experience" in the Fevola debacle and what followed. He will come back to the game a much better coach than he was.

I don't want him ANYWHERE near recruiting decisions. I don't want him steering the ship. But I wouldn't mind him telling Vlaustin where to stand at a boundary throw-in.

I watched it on Fox Footy. Not sure if it'll be anywhere on the interwebz. Possibly one of the more link savvy people will know?

Cheers Juke , Vossy handled himself so well during the whole interview. I'd doubt he wasn't fully aware of the questions before hand. Very solid individual, Tiges could do worse than go after him as an assistant. Wouldn't surprise me if we did. Interestingly seems much of what was happening at the Lions seems to mirror what's gone on at RFC interms of rebuild, expectations etc

We need to have another coach in the panel that has tasted success at some stage. Furthermore we need someone who will (I hope) tell the midfield to toughen up a fair bit. I hate to say this but I look at our side and apart from Matt Thomas we have no real Mongrel or dirt. Cotchin is not a tough man and will never run through someone, same goes for Martin and Deledio and the rest. We need to tell this players to be physical and aggressive to the man and the ball. How we miss Tuck

I'm a fan of this boss

RFC will either not even consider hiring him, consider hiring him then decide we don't need another assistant, or consider hiring him and miss out because they have their fingers in their arses. bookmark that

I think Cotch is a very tough man.
Running through someone doesn't make a player tough. Anyone can do that. We may need a bit more mongrel but you don't have to be tough to hurt opponents.
