Yeah, far too little blame is ever leveled at the players.

It's the whole chicken and egg thing isn't it. Players before coaches or coaches before players?

Players not running hard it's the players. Players who dont' run hard enough for long enough that keep getting selected, it's the coaches. If the coaches know a reason why they can't run hard enough, then perhaps it's the fitness program!

He's the 'Midfield Manager' and those metrics stink.

It's not like any of our onball unit have improved or are setting the world on fire since he got here either.

Wines has stagnated. Ebert is circling the plughole. Boak is in limbo. SPP can't get a game.

Apart from that, sure, he's on fire.

We also have 3 more years of Rockliff, and I would think we have Voss to thank for that too.

You can make numbers say whatever you want them to say. I'm sure all of Nathan Bassett's KPIs suggest we should be winning the flag in a canter rather than missing finals. We have a clear weak point in our team and it's not the midfield.
Forwards: 13th
Mids: 14th
Defence: 3rd

It's clearly the mids and the forwards.

Or you could say Polec has had a career year, Ryder was AA ruckman last year before battling injury this year, SPP has overall had a fantastic first two years in the system, Wingard has looked extremely capable since going in there, etc.

I don't think our midfield are world beaters or anything but it's nowhere close to being our weak point.

I suspect our structures are weak more than the players themselves. Cumulatively they suck too, is that leadership?

.
Our midfield lacks pace and clean ball use other wise I agree.

Why do people always assume that Voss sucks simply because our club as a whole has underperformed since he got here? To me, he comes across as clearly the most articulate and inspiring of our coaching staff. He's a triple premiership captain, has 5 years experience as a senior coach at AFL level and 4 years experience as an assistant in our system. I see no reason why he wouldn't make a good senior assistant.

Lol, so you've decided that the sole measurement of a midfield's performance is clearance differential and have assigned a ranking of 14th based on that and that alone.

By the by, we're actually 11th in that stat not 14th. And guess where Richmond rank? 18th.

While there is an anti-Voss agenda on this board, I personally don't have much against him, and if those inside the club are happy with him then so am I. I'm more worried about the personnel we have in the midfield than the coaching. Rockliff is a white elephant, the coaching move of Boak to half forward has been a monumental failure and our balance with SPP, Wines and Ebert just isn't right, especially as SPP still struggles to impact games against the top sides.

Sure, but Polec was always capable of a year like this when untroubled by injury and with natural progression (he is 25/26 and at his peak), we saw that in 2014 before Voss came aboard.

Would he have got there anyway with a bit of luck? Probably.

Richmond can be 18th in the midfield when they are 2nd for attack and 1st for defence.

Richmond can be 18th in the midfield when they are 2nd for attack and 1st for defence.

Their gameplan is predicated on a rolling platoon of handballs on the counter-attack, often with Grigg rucking while Nankervis rests.

Our gameplan is Ryder winning the tap or else.

I'm not sure you can 100% use these stats though. What if Ken's philosophy is we will have one less at a clearance to bolster our defence? Then of course our midfield will suffer and our defence will look better. Or if he says we need to leave one player on the defensive side of the clearance at all times to stop the Richmond-style forward handball? Or we have to have all but two forward line players leading to the ball because the rest have to help in midfield and defence and therefore can only lead towards goals?

I think you have to look at the overall coaching philosophy, and we are clearly defence first, with the attitude that if you defend well everything else will fall into place.

It's not the first time a club has done this against us and won. I remember the Crows did it against us last year in one of the Showdowns. It's an effective tactic that we ignore because we back our system over stopping their tactics.

Problem is we haven't overcome it and our coaches yet again are made to look like chumps.

You know what will be really insulting? In 12 months Rucci will have an article about how Port play the lowest scoring, most unattractive football in the league and supporters are staying away in droves as the club disappears down the S-bend. And what did we as supporters do when we had the chance to stop this mediocrity? Why didn't we do something something constitution something something special general meeting something something? Why did we just stand by and accept this rot? We are all to blame. Not him, he tried to warn us. Cryptically. We were too dumb to read between the lines.

Personally I hope if Voss is to have more influence that means we will revert to a more old style Brisbane football that valued ruckmen and big key position forwards. I mean hope is all I have right now, right?

Hard to see Ken thinking one ruckman is a great idea moving forward at all.

Even if we land Lycett we will still need to give Paddy a rest and start playing the younger ruckman.

You never know, that whole scenario could be a Nicks thing as much as Kens?

Having Schofield back (if true) will be a far better 'in' than Lade has been, if your a head coach of a State league like Bass and won Grand Finals you have to be doing something right no?

Our midfield consists of:
Kicking efficiency:
110th Karl Amon
238th Steven Motlop
344th Jared Polec
403rd Brad Ebert
513th Justin Westhoff
551st Robbie Gray
561st Ollie Wines
568th Tom Tockliff
569th Paddy Ryder
572nd Travis Boak
576th Chad Wingard
594th Sam Powell-Pepper

Clangers per game:
7th Sam Powell-Pepper
69th Brad Ebert
73rd Jared Polec
80th Justin Westhoff
87th Tom Rockliff
94th Travis Boak
128th Ollie Wines
132nd Karl Amon

And that is with our hideous chip, chip slow possession ball movement.

I would accept it more if we were moving the ball at break neck speed ala Phil Walsh's midfield, but under our game plan that's unforgivable.

The theory in the reports on the Lycett contract offer is that Ryder will play more as a forward and Lycett will lead the ruck line. That is supposed to be what Port are telling Lycett. And why would he come back just to be second banana again?

Ken's not said he's against ruckmen but he clearly doesn't think Frampton is up to it. Maybe for buying socks on Bridge Road he is. I actually think they would have played Hayes if he hadn't been injured.

Overall we need to be more effective with all that we do, watching SPP yesterday expend energy fending off players then blinding turning and belting the ball 100m up in the air for a 20m gain is just plain energy sapping and dumb. It summed up our forward entries this year - dumb.

I hope when JLT comes around players like Ryder, Dixon, Watts, Marshall, Frampton are all leading to marks kicked lace out on their chest, this bullshite bomb it in stuff was garbage.

Centrals yesterday looked like a well skilled AFL side compared to the Magpies.
