Voss is obviously not useless; he was one of the great captains of our generation and led his club to 3 straight flags.
As REH says, the power of a good manager is not doing everything themselves, but in the formation and management of a team which allows each member's strengths to shine through and for the team to be greater than the sum of its parts.
We all love Schofield on here but if he were in this role he could well be useless. Alastair Clarkson probably doesn't help our club if he's in player welfare. Choco wouldn't have succeeded at Port if he was in KT's role and charged with fostering sponsor relationships. It's why it's so hard to pass judgement on individual coaching performance, since this internal functioning is not transparent to us.
Realistically we as observers have little clue on what the ideal coaching group would look like, all we can do is react to the results and infer coach x is doing a great job. It's why I ultimately place blame for performance with those in charge of forming and leading the coaching group; ultimately the buck stops at the top.
But from this shrouded perspective it's great to see that the 3Ks have been able to strike the right balance. From Ollie's comments earlier today, this has been 8 years in the making and we are primed for a decade of success. If this past 5 years really was a slow burn in getting the structures in place for long term success then my personal full credit to them. But time will tell.
