Our draw starts to open up a fair bit now, some winnable games starting to appear soon.

I think we can win 6-8 games with hopefully the possibility of us pulling off a win or two like Richmond did against Sydney yesterday (eg: against a superior opponent). So far, we have shown over the last 18 months that we can beat teams who are worse than us, or roughly on a par. These sorts of games are must-wins, but it is also necessary for us to really push better teams to the line if we are to go forward.

Mind you, given the loss to GC last year, its not outside of the realms of possibility that things could turn very ugly, very quickly. If we lose to teams that would generally be considered to be worse than us, then I would imagine that Voss will find it hard to keep his job.

Imo, if things get worse the AFL will have to step in and do something.
Bringing Gold Coast in has made it more difficult to sustain two teams in Queensland.
We need to win respect back and the only way to do that ,unless somehow our form improves dramatically, is to bring in a high profile coach.
We cant afford one, they can bloody help.
They have splashed mountains of cash at the two new teams ,they can look after us too.helping get a big name. Not sure who though:(
I hope Vossy can turn things around though, I really do,but am like most people, feeling pretty depressed about where we are at the moment.
I hate that all the work of winning respect with the premierships has gone out the window and we a laughing stock.
I find that very sad.

I think Voss should be reviewed at the end of the season.

People continue to point out the age of our list (2nd youngest to GWS i think someone has said). What these players need is a good teacher. Not sure Voss is the man who can fulfil this job. There's a bloke at Adelaide who would have been ideal. Going back to guys like Scott etc...not that keen on that. If Voss does go then a completely fresh start is required, IMO. Harvey? Not for me, thanks.

No Harvey for me either.

We don't need help, we got ourselves into this situation, much more satisfying we we get ourselves out of it.

We have just played 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, and 9th on the ladder.

Out of our next 9 games we play 6 teams in the bottom half of the ladder, including 16th, 17th and 18th. Let's see where we are at the end of that.

Reviewed at the end of the season, when we can look back and actually see how the season went, and what, if any, progress has been made with the playing list. If we still end up with 6-8 wins, would be hard to deny him an extention after only 4 wins last season, and stil an extremely young list.

I think this makes a lot of sense. Especially after the next few games, where we play a few lower teams. We did just have a pretty tough run opponent-wise. It was only a couple of months ago that people were saying they would be surprised if we had any wins after 7 rounds.

You wouldn't sack a coach seven rounds in, but he is on track to be sacked towards the end of the year. It may get to the point where his position is simply untenable, a bit like Neil Craig last year, and they have no option but to replace him. I wouldn't be surprised to see a change made at about round 16 or so. At the same time, he's not a dead man walking. There's still time for him, but things need to start clicking into gear soon.

Neil Craig had lost the support and faith of the playing group. It wouldn't surprise me if Voss is close to having a similar situation.

Not sure if this is the right thread to discuss this, but the best candidates I can think of (going off comments from people in the know) to replace Voss are Leon Cameron and Ken Hinkley. Or maybe even Scott Burns.

As I said I really hope Michael can turn it around. I think the world of him.

Lets hope he can.

One thing that is for sure, is that it would be very unlikely for Voss to be sacked prior to the Hall of Fame event, given that the negative publicity and feelings generated could well impact upon people's desire to pay $180 per head to attend the event if the club is in serious turmoil. Likewise, it would also leave a very sour taste in the mouth if we sacked Voss prior to the Hall of Fame event, only to install him as a club legend a few weeks later.

Well, either that, or it will take some shocking losses to see it happen...

I hope you don't mind me barging onto this board but i personally think it was a mistake hiring Voss as a senior coach when he had not had any assistant coach experience. From memory he was going to West Coast when Matthews surprised everyone and retired and your board hired Voss simply because he was a amazing player and no other reason.

I remember last year St Kilda could have made Robert Harvey their senior coach but they didn't as he was not the right man for the job. I just feel your board should have made their decision using their heads rather than their hearts and see that at the time Voss was no where near ready to be a senior coach.

I seriously doubt anyone disagrees with you. Appointing Voss they way they did without a proper plan in place was a huge mistake IMO.

I agree.

The appointment "process" was amateurish to say the least.

However, a mid-season sacking would just compound the issue. No point in it at all.

He must be allowed to finish his contract.....the "KPI's" (whatever they are) should remove the emotion from the decision that must ultimately be made.

I don't get why all the angst on this one ...

He has performance criteria in his contract - so if he performs well enough in whatever the criteria are (set with a full on rebuild in mind so I suspect it is not based primarily on WL record) he continues if he does not then he (hopefully) retires with dignity (as opposed to being sacked) ... these criteria will be evaluated (I would assume) at the end of the season just like we do our players (list management), our coaching staff and our board (eventually).

Should we fall off a total cliff and the players start wearing little Voss dolls with pins stuck in uncomfortable places around during the games then the board would have to step in but I really don't see the signs of this atm.

I *do* get that we want to see a more competative thing happening but I also know that I mentally signed on for a few years of pain when we announced the rebuild line - that I would see glimples of glory followed by agonising panoramas of black holes and the appearances of one step forward two steps back etc ... I also knew that there would be many posts/threads not happy about it!

I guess I just don't know enough about football to see how bad things are - or maybe I am just way too good at finding ways to explain why things are happening without assuming malice aforethought etc - eg it frutrates me immensly when our players don't run to space to receive the ball / provide an option for the ball carrier ... but maybe they have been told to guard/stay in area 'x' as part of a plan and their native instinct to do so is fighting with their not-yet-instinctive plan following which leaves them in mental no mans land and just looks lazy and indecisive (hope that all made sense).

Anyway I just don't get it - this is exactly what I was expecting to see this year plus *and* minus 20% and until shown otherwise fully anticipating the rest of the season to play out both better and worse than what we have shown so far and really looking forward to how we go agaist the teams we are about the same level as etc ...

Simple question.

Why?

Why not?

we are even making a list of disgruntled players to poach from other club :D, I would love to see Nigel back in our club.

He's worked under Bomber and Chris scott, been part of 2 premierships (different coaching styles as well, to some extent), has played his role in how the newcomers get moulded as part of Geelong playing structure.

Coaches midfield as well, a big tick in many boxes. Grab him I say.

It's bad form to quote a long post with only a couple of lines in reply but I have to here because of the quality of the content.

Really excellent post, think you summed up the situation perfectly.
