I was listening to a podcast with Kane Cornes the other day and he mentioned how he would always be competing with Michael Wilson for winning time trials. Forgot how much of a gun Wilson was and found this podcast of Wilson talking about his career and Port Adelaide transitioning from SANFL to AFL.

Wilbur was my favourite as a kid, loved how hard he was at it & he never left anything in the tank. Surjan was the next one & now Butters is up.
The same, had #15 on my back, stuck with it when he went to the #21 and rolled with the #15 through the Motlop years also.

Next time you're with Kane listening to podcasts Mikey can you tell him he's a hack from me please?

Total gun. Haven't had a defensive player like him since. Highly skilled, excellent one on one defender & tough both phyically & mentally. The search continues.

I saw this bloke at the airport one early Monday morning after a weekend we'd lost a couple seasons ago. I am not sure why but I felt like crying and hugging him. Embodied everything we loved about this club. Brought back memories from when I was a kid watching our early 2000's teams.

Gun, harder than a cat's head.

And absolute fitness freak with a Kona Ironman finish to his name.

Over your career who are some of the players that stand out the most in terms of athletic ability.

His first answer was Buddy Franklin, but he also mentioned Michael Wilson.

Early days a guy called Michael Wilson. He was a defender at Port Adelaide and an absolute animal. He's a physio now. He
was a beast you know we did a session one day we did we did three sets of three sets of four 150s on the running track. I was ridiculously aggressive early days in what i threw at Port Adelaide players. So on a Monday morning we'd start our week with a repeat speed session on the track and then we go and do skills in the afternoon and just went from there like it was crazy two or three sessions a day. All the midfielders did a touch footy competition on Tuesday nights that was the third running session they did for the day like crazy stuff.

Anyway Michael Wilson did this session he was so physically exhausted he couldn't drive home i had to ring his wife to come and pick him up to drive him. Like a beast physically but strong you know he had multiple knee reconstructions, Achilles ruptures, shoulder reconstruction and he just kept coming back. He had a shoulder injury going into the 204 final series and i think it might have been between seven and eight weeks. He couldn't drive his car for the first three days after a game that's how much pain he was in with his shoulder. There's hardly another player in the competition that would have played he played for eight weeks and at the time the coaches regarded him as in the top three or four players you know in the team wasn't a huge name but hugely important.

Him and Roger James I always put us down for the W.
