8 finals appearances and 4 of those into a grandfinal appeances is a fair effort.

Don't expect any Pie supporters to give him a glowing endorsement and that post TG is no surprise.

How quickly they forget how he catapulted them up the ladder and turned ordinary spud players into excellent contributors not to mention their 1st flag in 50 odd years and winning a flag at Collingwood is very hard to do as Sheeds hammered on the head and he is right.

MM hate is going to get us no where and harping on negatives and a glass half empty attitude is fruitless and we now must move on untied regardless who coaches us whether it is Mick or Roos or anyone but a hate campaign filled with negatives to suit ones own agenda/opinion will get us no where.

Our club is bigger than any individual and is open to criticism no matter what decision it makes sadly.

Post of the day.

That doesn't excuse Pagan's disastrous recycle policy. He deliberately targeted recycled hacks in deference to taking a punt on kids. French was a good servant and Scotland has proven his worth. The rest.

Having recruited well in 2002 (Kade Simpson and Brad Fisher), he totally went off the rails in 2003 (Scotland and Carrazzo the exceptions) - David Clarke, Daniel Harford, Brett Johnson, Digby Morell, David Teague, Corey McGrath, Ricky Mott, Jordan Bannister, Glen Bowyer.

I never rated Pagan for one instant, but youre being overly harsh here.

He was faced with a situation of having to delist/ cope with retirements and so on of 36 players from the list over the space of 2 years.

Of those that were left, our early draft picks from the decade prior (our 'up and comers') featured Massie, Sporn, Livingstone (and the rest traded away).

Strip him of 1st and second round picks and the PSD for two years, and cut funding in every department, and what did you want him to do?

He had players departing left right and centre, no money and no draft picks to work with, and no up and coming talent at the club.

We had no ruckmen, Fev was our only key forward (and he was inaccurate and undisciplined and hadnt yet established himself in the best 22), we had lost SOS, Woof, McKay and so on from the back six, and Diesel, Camporeale and co from the guts. Kouta and Ratts were also on the way out.

We can count ourselves lucky that despite all that crap, we were able to unearth Simpson with a late pick, got Waite as a handy F/S picked up Carrazzo (and Scotland) for cheap.

You mention 2003 as a 'bad year for recruiting'. well we were stipped of 1st and 2nd round picks that year. We were lucky enough to get a priority pick (that nabbed us 1AW), but our first live pick wasnt till the 3rd round at #35 in what was regarded as a really weak draft.

We swapped that pick for Scotland who was 22 at the time. In exchange the Pies drafted Brett Hall who was delisted without playing a senior game. Massive Win.

FWIW, our next live pick as #51 which we swapped to Hawthorn for Harford. The Hawks went on to draft Matthew Ball with that pick who was also delisted without playing a senior game.

Net result in 2003 - despite being stripped of 1st and 2nd round picks, it being a really weak draft and having no money to do any trades, and we wound up with 3 best 22 100+ game players in Scotland, Walker, and Nick Stevens.

2002 and 2003 (given the circumstances) were actually pretty darn succesfull years for drafting for us.

Mick can bring Cam Wood with him after he passed up the chance to draft Callan Ward, Scott Selwood or Harry Taylor. ;)

My favourite Malthouse trade was Mick downgrading pick seven for pick ten (Chris Egan) and Bowman Nixon. Hawks drafted Jordan Lewis with pick seven.

The Eagles drafted LeCras with the pick Mick traded for Chad Morrison.

Jolly for 14 and whatever, Ball for pick 30 and Tarrant for pick 8 and Medhurst are the only trades/recruiting moves he's nailed.

Trading Mal Michael for Molloy was a pearler.

Ratten's trading misses aren't as bad as Malthouse's blunders.
despite that bad trading he made four grand finals in 8 years from 2002 what a coach boom!

Micky Milkshake is an egomaniac. Of course he wants the Carlton gig - he gets o be a media star again and make stupid comment after stupid comment every week. The ONLY positive about Malthouse - is the collyFLOGS anger and Fat Eddie's hystrionics. The war of words has already started with Eddie saying Collingwood were worried about 'killing Malthouse' bcause he couldn't handle AFL pressure.

Well Malthouse - if you get the gig mate - I've got news for you - compared to Collingwood pussycats the pressure at Carlton will be like you are premanently in the furnace.

We don't have Swann/Pendelbury/Thomas/Cloke et al at Carlton and even with all that gear or Cattle - he won ONE GF after a draw against St Kilda.

Get Choco - and get rid of the Collingwood vermin that have invaded our Club and are milking it dry. Malthouse on 1-1.2M p.a ARE YOU SERIOUS?

He has orchestrated teh exit of Ratts alog with his ex Collingwood mates in at Carlton - these are very very dark days ladies and gents.

and BTW spare me the I will support the Club whatever rubbish - the Board should read what Malthouse has written about him being born a Collingwood supporter and dying a Collingwood supporter. How he would never coach against his 'boys'. The list goes on and on - this guy is a psycho. He has already said that Jud shouldnt be Captain ...nice Micky Milkshake ..nice - yeah I am not impressed if our wise and smart and oh so clever bunch of mental short people on the Board go with Milkshake.

So if we get to 70K members and IF we win next year- then he has just done his job nohting more he woud hav edone his job and that is it - anything less and Micky Milkshake will be a FAILURE. Thats the benchmark - give him ONE year if he cant win a Premiership - piss him off. He is only worth 1/5th of a person like Ratts.

You're just getting boring now, you keep saying the same thing over & over. Always negative.

Mate, stop being such a drama queen, take your dress off and have a cold shower. Talk about over reacting. MM is agood coach and i for one am glad he has an ego. It comes with being one of th ebest.

my point was that I believe we wasted far too many picks from 2001-2005 on old players that weren't going to be around for the long haul. We bottomed out at a similar time to Geelong & Hawthorn, yet they were able to rebuild far quicker. I understand hindsight is a great thing and they were able to draft super talents...I just believe we should have held on to far more of those picks than we did.

Which picks should we have held onto exactly?

We didnt have any in 2002 or 2003.

Hawthorn had the advantage of Fremantle gifting them pick 1 in the Croad deal (Hodge) and Richmond gifting them Franklin, and Geelong benefitted from some very handy F/S picks.

Carlton beating the pies with mick and cloke will be so exciting
You happy now that you have what you wanted? how long is it going to take for you to turn on Mick?

Finished dancing on Ratts grave yet mate?

If we dont make the finals next year, who you going to blame?

I think we will not only make the finals but should make top 4 next year, and this would have been the case under Ratts as well.

Its just a question of whether we can progress further than top 4.

Malthouse is worried about his wife's feelings according to today's news. I am worried about Malthouses' wife's feelings too. We should all be worried about Malthouse's wifes feelings - apparently she is the 'victim' here according to Micky Milkshake Malthouse. Maybe J PRATT can invite Mrs Malthouse in for a nice cup of tea a BEX and lie down. I reckon Swann and Malthouse in their weekly dinners talk abotu Mrs Malthouses' "feelings" a lot.

I have never read such bullshit tripe in years - if this Muppet comes to Carlton - strap yourselves in for the Micky Milkshake Show.

Choco is a better Coach than Malthouse AND Roos - FACT.

This is the same Choco that Port supporters on BF complain about his drafting of half back flankers and gold passes.

TG, Derek Hine has been a recruiter for the pies since 2005 and has done a pretty good job.

I note with interest that those drafts you listed were pre-2005
Who mentioned their drafting?

That's Hine's area.

The coach is ultimately responsible for the trading.
despite that bad trading he made four grand finals in 8 years from 2002 what a coach boom!
Also took them from second to second last after they didn't tank to get Thomas and Pendlebury...

It must be hard working at the Pies and WC with all their resources.

Wonder why the alleged "still a super coach" doesn't want to coach Port Adelaide if he has still has the energy. Perhaps he can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

Mick Malthou$e.

Mick Malthouse accuses Robert Walls of letting ‘petty things' influence his opinion

“I sometimes wonder where Robert is coming from. He seems to be very selective in his figures and he seems to be very selective about my coaching,” Malthouse told Melbourne radio station 3AW.

“This might be a long bow and I hate to draw this, but there were three people in mind for the West Coast job…Wayne Schimmelbusch, Robert Walls and myself.

“I did work at SEN last year and now I work at 3AW, and Robert reversed.

“I hope these petty things don’t influence his thought process.

Nice way to endear yourself to the supporter base by bagging a Carlton legend and premiership coach.

Walls might be a bastard, but he's our bastard. :thumbsu:

Sounds just like that egotistical prick Sheedy.

I dont think the current list is capable of this.

I base this on exposed poor depth, the lack of a inside midfielder, reliable key forward target, one dimensional midfield and an injury prone back six.

On the plus side we have free agency, a number of clubs looking for players, and a likely top 10 pick to work with this year.

my spin on it.....mick has won 3 flags yeh? wiki leads me to belive the case, he won back to back flags with WC, so on stats he has won 1 flag in 25 years ... funny how people buy into hype, cose with 20 years more i'm sure ratten might of won a few flags

You didn't quote the next paragraph. Every one of those players was available after our Ricky Mott selection in the 2003 national, preseason and rookie drafts. Every one of those is still on an AFL list today.

Shall I go on? With the pick we used on Harford and Johnson (9 + 32 games), we could have drafted Daniel Jackson or Sam Fisher.

The talent was there to be drafted. Drafting is never an exact science of course but Pagan did himself no favours by loading up on list cloggers. Those players helped him win a new contract at the end of 2004 but I guess thanks to Denis we have the three #1s. ;)

Pagan got sacked for the way he treated justin davies, pagan was a real twat to him so much so kouta stood up to him an the board sacked him 2 weeks later..

I wonder if MM wants to coach the Blues because he is excited about the list and its potential or whether he wants to coach the Blues to stick it up Eddie and the Pies.

I hope the club is considering other options, would prefer Roos if available.

I would rather we had given Ratten a chance to coach out his contract with a healthier list to make a better decision about his ability and future. Not really sure how I feel about all this.:(

Not a fan of malthouse. I reckon he is a nut and the way he derailed the woods season in his last year was disgraceful and unprofessional.

Don't forget Scotland was traded to the Blues by Mick, for pick 35 or something.

You didn't quote the next paragraph. Every one of those players was available after our Ricky Mott selection in the 2003 national, preseason and rookie drafts. Every one of those is still on an AFL list today.

From Pick 57 (Ricky Mott) onwards:

Hardly an impressive list. Clubs passing left right and centre.

Shall I go on? With the pick we used on Harford and Johnson (9 + 32 games), we could have drafted Daniel Jackson or Sam Fisher.

Or we could have drafted Kyle Archibald, Brett Hardigan, Craig Callahan, Matthew Davis, Shane Morrison or Julian Rowe.

We had picks #2, 35, 51, 67 to work with in that Draft. Walker picked himself at #2, leaving us 35, 51 and 67.

Note that most clubs had alrady passed as early as round 4 of that draft; there were only 10 'live' selections made in round 4, and there were only 3 'live' selections made in round 5 (and we made one of those in each round).

It was a shit draft. To have secured Andrew Walker, Nick Stevens and Heath Scotland without a 1st or 2nd round pick to use and with zero money to secure a trade was impressive to say the least.

The talent was there to be drafted. Drafting is never an exact science of course but Pagan did himself no favours by loading up on list cloggers.

Pagan had no choice but to recycle. We had no money to trade for players, the draft was shit, and we were stripped of 1st and 2nd round draft picks.

I'll throw any AFL recruiter into that draft, put them in the position we were in with massive departures and no money, tell them to wait till the 3rd round to make selections, and lets see how they go.

Another spin might be he got his teams into 18 final campaigns and 7 grandfinal apperances.
