No excuse :D
Hahaha!!! :p

The amount of footy talk at work on the site today and yesterday was unreal and it was all Ratten/Carlton based with everyone asking me what is going to happen!!! o_O

Devastated for Ratts as he will always be a Carlton champion however it would be irresponsible by the club to not get one of the best coaches in the modern era in Malthouse who is not only available but willing to coach.

Yep, I can vouch that it's a work-killer.

Do we really want this man in our club, his outburst directed at Steven Milne was inexcusable!!
His lack of leadership and maturity was there for all to see.
If we sack Ratten we have -issed $1.2mil against the wall on coaches in the past 4 years, the clubs administration needs to be held accountable.
Yeah last thing you want is a proven premiership winning coach.

IF we were to pay out Rattens contract then I would want the club to do due diligence in finding his replacement. .. This is not a Monarchy, you don't hand someone a job because they have a name. .. I still want the club to come to the conclusion that this was the recession we had to have and let Ratten see out his contract and begin earning a new one in 2013. ..

I can imagine.

It's been the same all week on GuesSEN.

Seems that Carlton is the ONLY Club in the AFL.

Don't get me started on twitter. :p

It's my firm belief that the Malthouse deal was as good as done back in late May / early June.

We tried to get him last year, couldn't because of a clause in his contract with Collingwood. Gave Ratten two more years as one would look stupid, needed to be top 4 and push for the premiership. We didnt, exit Ratten, enter Mick.
Simple.

I really hope we do not hire him...Last time I played footy I do not recall the coach kicking goals!

I suspect membership will increase by 10k min, plus sponsorship will rise, as such much of the cost will be offset

Imagine the build up to the first game and then the blues v pies games will be amazing

Not done, but most likely agreed in principle.

Now a lot has to happen post agreement-in-principle to actually agreeing with the full scope of terms, for both parties.
A lot of it would be around money but also all the peripherals in relation to Malthouse's demands.

I know Malthouse is the clear front-runner but until we have a signature, well, we just don't.
Wouldn't be at all surprised for something to have happened in order for us to have changed tack.

If the blues want to save money but dump ratten, how about ken Hinkley?

Yeah my bad i missed it!! Blardy work all day! :p

100% expect the club to announce that Ratts wont be coach next year. You don't call a press conference to confirm that we are keeping Ratts when he still has a contract for 12 Mths and if we were going to keep him for next year it would just be business as usual.

havent they said the press conference is to 'clarify' brett rattens coaching position. To me that says they are going to pull out the standard company line that there will be no decision until a full review at the end of the year.

I will welcome MM with open arms if we get him and fully support the club and look forward to the new era we are about to embark on.
I wish I could share your optimism. By hiring Malthouse, they're telling us that we have a list that can win a flag in the next few seasons. No need to look at other coaches in case our list isn't good enough. And there's another Lyon or Worsfold out there. Just get another Parkin or Pagan to hose down the resistance the great unwashed will come out after we sack a legend.

If we don't make the finals next year and make top four within two years, then the multl-million fallout will make the last two years look like a picnic. At least Malthouse and his manager will get their money. Carlton will have to pay out a coach for the fourth time. Brittain. Pagan. Ratten. Malthou$e. Swann will just move onto another industry for yet another blank cheque. Sticks and the cronies on the board will have to deal with the fall out yet again.

LOL.

Pavlov's dog is here.

Honestly i do think we have a list that get us No.17 in the coming years. Comparing to Pagan is harsh and in the days/weeks after Pagan signed if i remember correctly we were smacked by the AFL for salary cap breaches and had to put a team together full of un contracted players and also rans. Pagan never had the cattle MM is about to take on.

I am sad for Ratten but this is the game sadly and the way it goes and i can only offer unconditional support for the club whatever decision we make. I understand people will be upset and angry but every club has gone through this and we are not alone, AFL is a coaching merry go round.

If we don't make finals talk etc etc is something we will never know until it unfolds but the board has decided not to sit on it's hands and grab the best available coach and who knows whether or not it is the right call but it is the one i am supporting and getting behind.

And if we get another unproven coach/stick with Ratten, and again in 3 years have shown little improvement, having passed up on the likes of Malthouse/Roos, what will the fallout be then?

Unfortunately there is no guaranteed path to choose, and in hindsight most clubs will have looked to made many bad decisions in their pursuit of a premiership (not just coaching choices).

I would rather us back ourselves in with the mentality that we are capable of winning a flag within the next 2 seasons. I still believe we are more than capable with the right approach and attitude week in week out. Let's hope so anyway.

Debate is ragging re Mick Malthouse across several threads so it is surely time to give him his own MEGA THREAD, where the pros and cons can be debated.

He is in my opinion the best coach I have seen and through the majority of his time at Collingwood I have marvelled at what he has been able to achieve at times with some very ordinary teams.

8 (including the draw) Grand Finals since 90.

Enjoy.

Michael "Mick" Malthouse (born 17 August 1953) is a former Australian rules footballer and the former coach of three Australian Football League (AFL) clubs. Although his playing career included a premiership for Richmond in the VFL, he is best known for his AFL coaching career.

Malthouse is the most successful coach in the history of the West Coast Eagles, holding several club coaching records including the most grand final appearances (1991, 1992, 1994), most premierships (1992 and 1994, both against Geelong), as well as the highest win ratio.

The 1992 Grand Final win was the first AFL premiership won by a team from outside Victoria and was the West Coast Eagles first ever senior premiership.

He has also coached Collingwood to grand finals in 2002, 2003, 2010 and 2011; with success in the 2010 Grand Final Replay, leading Collingwood to its first premiership since 1990.

  • 1985 and 1991 Players Association Coach of the Year
  • 1991 Inaugural AFL Coach of the Year
  • 1992 Institute of Sport Coach of the Year [2]
  • Richmond premiership player 1980
  • West Coast premiership coach 1992 and 1994
  • 2008 International Rules Series Coach
  • 2010 International Rules Series Coach
  • 2010 AFLCA Coach of the Year
  • Collingwood premiership coach 2010
  • 2nd longest serving coach of the Collingwood FC behind Jock McHale.
  • 2nd (all time) most games coached at AFL/VFL level.
  • 3rd most wins as coach (all time).

You can add to that, the fact that his last match as a player was playing for Richmond against Carlton in the 1982 grand final.

Another interesting thing to consider with MM.

How long would the contract be??? Would a premiership have to be delivered within x time for an extension etc.

Considering only around 10% of individuals in the games history that have coached at the highest level have achieved the ultimate success in winning a flag i doubt it. While MM is one of them and has done it multiple times lets just see what unfolds before making outrageous claims. I don't think i need to remind everyone just how long ago 1995 was.
