Does it bother anyone else that Malthouse hasn't been a bull at the gate about taking the job. All the time its been "I'll have to see if I want it", "I'll have to see how it will impact my family". The undertone being "the job is mine if I want it, but I haven't made up my mind yet".

And if/when he chooses yes (which we all know he will, or has already), he's said "I have other commitments in September/October...I want to go with my daughter on a book deal...I have a family holiday in December, etc. etc. etc."

This is bullsh!t. Why hasn't he come out & said "I am pumped and eager to be taking over at Carlton. They have a strong list and can be very competitive, very quickly. I can't wait to start. I had other commitments, but I've cancelled them all to jump into this full steam and put things in place as quick as I can. Coaches will change, players will change, our gameplan will change and the sooner I start the better. Not to mention draft and trade periods coming up very quickly and I want to know as much as I can about the club, players, etc. quickly to be able to make informed decisions here."

Dunno. To me it just all stinks a bit.

Because they havent agreed full terms as yet and he has obligations outside of football to finish up with first before he can come in line that...

Its better to be coy to increase the renumeration offer in return for accepting the Job.

Could be worth a few hundred grand to him.

And fair enough too.

Also, he may very well be undecided - he gets renumerated well from his Media and other commitments already, and would need to weigh up a number of things before signing on the dotted line.

I cant begrudge him for his position.

1st welcome aboard. I think you will hear all those things and more once he is put in front of the Media and Announced as the New Senior Coach of Carlton. I see why u r saying what you are but he will definetly come out with all the normal lines when he is sitting in a media conference wearing a Carlton top. Because as it sits at this time, he still isnt Officially the Carlton Coach..

Why does everyone think Ling will be a great assistant coach?

Mainly because he has an IQ of 200, played very well (was in the leadership group in an efficient, killer Geelong), and has shown signs in his Ch7 role to have a great understanding of the game, as well as having displayed great communication skills. There are definitely good signs there.

I think people on here are jumping at shadows and reading way too much into what Mick does or doesn't say.

Whether you like him as a coach or not, one thing that you cannot question is his professionalism and committment.

I would just ignore any comments or reports prior to the appointment - it's all just smokesecreen.

I would imagine with Both MM and Lingy having media commitments they would have to see this through first and foremost before annoucements are made etc. Vlad would'nt want them "raining on his parade" whilst finals are on.
IMO MM will want Eddie/Buckleys blood once he's let off the leash.Loves his Pies boys,but would do anything I would imagine to take the other two down,Maguire and FIGJAM.

I'm keen to discuss some of the tactics Mick will instill next season...

Collingwood were renowned for never tagging under Malthouse - they would simply back their midfield in to overwhelm the opposition. I think we have gone too far the other way in recent years, with so many players engaged in defensive roles.

Seriously some days we would have several of Carrazzo, Joseph, Armfield, Gibbs, Curnow, Ellard etc playing defensive roles through the midfield. This severely limits the opportunity to spread after a clearance, with so many players on the back foot and focused on where their man is. Simmo and Murph appear to have been the only real outriders instructed to spread at first opportunity when we win the footy.

I wonder what Malthouse's 'no tagging' philosophy means for Carrazzo? You'd think that given how good he is in that role, Mick will deploy Carrots defensively. But it would be interesting to see Carrazzo allowed to do as he pleases in the midfield, without having to worry about an opponent. Would seriously get Swan-esque numbers given his incredible propensity to find the footy.

The thought of Murphy, Judd, Gibbs, Carrazzo, McLean and Simpson running through the midfield with freedom is most appealing, especially so given the inherent one-on-one qualities and defensive side most of these guys carry with them.

Yes, I think this is the point. At Collingwood, Malthouse demanded equal defensive accountability from the whole midfield group, and the more that group bought into it, the better they went. I personally think Carrazzo will be held up as our best example of a midfielder with genuine balance in his offensive and defensive game. It could be that the rest of the midfield group (even Judd) will be told that if they don't collectively lift their accountability, we won't make much progress under the Malthouse blueprint. Especially as he has already publicly said he doesn't think our back six are all that flash: he presumably believes they'll need all the upfield help they can get.

He started out that way but has since talked about his discussions with Carlton, and how impressive we were. I don't want him playing mind games to get a better deal. If he wants to coach again, it is now or never. He said it himself. He needs us as much as we need him so no higher ground to be taken.

Mick is very keen, he had a real glint in his eye when talking in his last interview. You could almost see that he was ready to jump out of his skin. All this talk by Mick is all smoke and mirrors orchestrated by Mick and CFC until it is officially announced.

Absolutely. Mick will instill systems and structures which were almost non-existant under Ratten. Plan A under Ratts was dismantled and that was that. He won't put up with one-way runners and Gibbs wil get the rocket he deserves. It's amazing what a difference a good coach makes e.g. Lyon, Clarkson, Sanderson etc.
Mick will take us where Ratts was unable to.

I don't think Malthouse will do more or less than what Ratten did... The difference is mindset.... Who would the players listen to more a coach with 30 years coaching experience, 7 grand final appearances and 3 premierships or a first time coach finding his feet who played with some of the list.

Because they're negotiating terms. He doesn't want to get back in the coach's seat for chicken feed. If he threw his arms up and said
"I WANT IT", we'd offer him a lot less than a mil a year.

You ever walked into a Harvey Norman store, seen the TV you like and gone "I WANT IT, GIVE IT TO ME NOW" and pay full retail price? Nope. You know you want it, but you haggle for the best price. Same situation here.

Once its signed on the bottom line, for the dollars he wants, then he will jump around saying "I am pumped and eager to be taking over at Carlton. "
