I can't help it, but what puts me off about MM was when he laughed off being massacred by Geelong towards the end of the H&A season last year. He looked on it as an abberation but it looked an awful lot like the writing on the wall to me. And so it proved.

Last year suggested to me that he had reached his use-by date. We've already taken one has-been on in Pagan and look how that went.

I had this worry, re the Pagan analogy, but I've assured myself that if MM was to take over, at least he has a decent playing list to work with, he"s knows that, he knows that we have a good list and can see immediate success, I wouldn"t think he would take it on otherwise.

Just sad for Ratts, really feel for him

Yes, I'm sure they will............until he loses a game. Then this entire process might just start again.

Thats it in a nutshell really, its all about winning

I wish I could share your optimism. By hiring Malthouse, they're telling us that we have a list that can win a flag in the next few seasons. No need to look at other coaches in case our list isn't good enough. And there's another Lyon or Worsfold out there. Just get another Parkin or Pagan to hose down the resistance the great unwashed will come out after we sack a legend.

If we don't make the finals next year and make top four within two years, then the multl-million fallout will make the last two years look like a picnic. At least Malthouse and his manager will get their money. Carlton will have to pay out a coach for the fourth time. Brittain. Pagan. Ratten. Malthou$e. Swann will just move onto another industry for yet another blank cheque. Sticks and the cronies on the board will have to deal with the fall out yet again.

LOL.

Pavlov's dog is here.

Yes I am salivating

I think Malthouse has proven he can build and develop a list, and fairly effectively assess the capabilities and shortcomings of a player. What I really like is he is a steely-eyed bastard who will tell a journo to get stuffed, Bryce Gibbs he's a passenger and Jeff Garlett he's a chicken. I believe he also has the profile and arrogance to tell the board to butt out. I am not sure Ratten has proven he can do these things. What will really hurt is if Malthouse gets here and 6 months says we need to rebuild.

This "messiah" complex that some Carlton supporters have about Malthouse is delusional....This is the same Malthouse that Eddie wanted out the door a few years ago, and was wishing onto Carlton earlier this year.
I think it was Robert Walls who I heard state that Malthouse has the record for the most consecutive years coaching without winning a Premiership.
I thought he was showing signs of mental fragility in his last year at Collingwood...and his appearance on the Footy Show basically to tell the world how unfair it was that he was being moved on, was narcissitic in the extreme.
Beware of what you wish for...

Honestly i do think we have a list that get us No.17 in the coming years. Comparing to Pagan is harsh and in the days/weeks after Pagan signed if i remember correctly we were smacked by the AFL for salary cap breaches and had to put a team together full of un contracted players and also rans. Pagan never had the cattle MM is about to take on.

I am sad for Ratten but this is the game sadly and the way it goes and i can only offer unconditional support for the club whatever decision we make. I understand people will be upset and angry but every club has gone through this and we are not alone, AFL is a coaching merry go round.

If we don't make finals talk etc etc is something we will never know until it unfolds but the board has decided not to sit on it's hands and grab the best available coach and who knows whether or not it is the right call but it is the one i am supporting and getting behind.
And if we get another unproven coach/stick with Ratten, and again in 3 years have shown little improvement, having passed up on the likes of Malthouse/Roos, what will the fallout be then?

Unfortunately there is no guaranteed path to choose, and in hindsight most clubs will have looked to made many bad decisions in their pursuit of a premiership (not just coaching choices).

I would rather us back ourselves in with the mentality that we are capable of winning a flag within the next 2 seasons. I still believe we are more than capable with the right approach and attitude week in week out. Let's hope so anyway.
Malthouse should get the same amount of support as Ratts received from the Ratten haters who bagged him endlessly in the last two seasons.

Where's the rush with Malthouse only going to work for Carlton or in the media next year?

If Malthouse fails, then we've flushed another few million down the drain because we didn't do a review before coming to a decision. And looked at any alternatives who can coach. Amateur hour. The club needs to do it the right way this time.

It would be a stronger show of confidence in the club if we looked at Malthouse and other coaches before appointing Ratten's replacement. Malthouse is playing on us a break. He doesn't believe in reviews. This is as much a face saving exercise as it is about getting a potential premiership coach. No doubt about it. All the ferals will be sucked in by having a name coach.

If Mick is appointed coach, I'd like to know which round you're going to turn on him and demand he depart.

I'm guessing our 2nd loss for 2013.

And if he ends up getting us to a prelim, or Gf or winning the flag, will you praise the club for taking action and making a big bold play? ......

I support the Carlton Football Club, its players and its senior coach.

At the moment Brett Ratten is the senior coach and as such I support him. Should Ratts get the flick, which looks like a foregone conclusion, I'll support whoever takes over the mantle.

When have I ever said any different?

Point taken for sure...

Reckon he was under huge pressure and didn't want to retire, he and eddie weren't exactly palsy walsy...

Anyway time will tell

We tried to get him last year, couldn't because of a clause in his contract with Collingwood. Gave Ratten two more years as one would look stupid, needed to be top 4 and push for the premiership. We didnt, exit Ratten, enter Mick.
Simple.
If this were true, a performance clause would have been inserted in Ratts contract to give the club an out on the second year. It wasnt, meaning either your scenario is flawed or we employ monkeys to work out the contracts and someone forgot to bring the peanuts that day, and should lose their job over it, that would presumably be the CEO. And because it seems that the buck stops with the boss (Players fail, Coach loses job) then the Pres needs to go too. The buck stops at the top. Its a debacle of epic proportions. This club is a joke. The sad thing is, we dont seem to have learned anything as an organisation, we just bumble from one disaster to another.

Those suggesting eddie didnt want mick is just plain wrong.

Mick was pushed out because north were interested in buckley but buckley preferred collingwood. Buckley suggested he would coach elsewhere if the pies didnt want him. Eddie couldnt stand the thought of losing the golden boy and organised that stupid transition phase. The downfall of course being that Mick ended up winning the flag to complicate things.

If buckley hadnt coached, make no mistake, malthouse would still be there

I suspect membership will increase by 10k min, plus sponsorship will rise, as such much of the cost will be offset

Imagine the build up to the first game and then the blues v pies games will be amazing
And if there isnt an increase of 10k in the membership numbers? What happens if a large number of people who dont renew their memberships because of the way the club has dealt with Ratts?

So you want to sacrifice the financial security of the club just to satisfy your pathological need to be instantly gratified and you are hoping that the club picks up more members to cover the costs.

TBH i actually think there would be a bigger backlash if ratten was retained. It could just be me but it does seem that more are preferring for ratten and the blues to part ways. Just what ive noticed

Look, I think we have been treading water off-field since Pratt passed. Sticks said yes because he loves the club- he'll never be on of the country's richest, he'll always be one of the most loyal. Who is the next Harris or Elliot?(forget the end years). We need leaders at the top, not many putting their hand up at the moment though.

FWIW, there's a school of thought that suggests that a coach with Ratten's lack of experience before taking on the Carlton senior job will only take the current group so far. Remember at AFL level Ratts had only one year as an Assistant Coach at Melbourne. So I'm not sure whether he has the ability/ecperience to take this group further. I loved him as a player. Commentators used to call Smokin Joe Misiti a ball magnet, but every time he faced Ratts he was humbled. So many of us are caught between our loyalty to him as a club champion & him as our coach.
Many I've spoken with who don't follow Carlton don't rate Ratts & believe he's reactive. Ironically I could say the same for David Parkin until in 1995 he empowered his players & they virtually coached themselves to a flag (with Ratts as the years B&F).
I rarely use this forum for Carlton updates but am reading with interest the various views because I am honestly not sure what the board should do. I'd hate to be in their shoes right now.

If your scenario were true, Dick Pratt would say got get Buckley. Of course Eddie did not want Mick. If Eddie wanted Mick, Mick would still be coaching them.

Seems you want to convince us that Black is white.

No he wouldnt of. Buckley was collingwood through and through, why on earth would pratt have gone after him??

Its not that eddie didnt want mick, its that he wanted no one else to have buckley. At the time it seemed win win as he didnt forsee a flag.

Sorry i forgot you know everything
