This whole past few weeks reeks, I'll eat my hat if Sticks and the board have not already all but signed Malthouse for next season.
Innuendo and public comments have only pointed to this, Ratts was going out, win loose or draw versus Gold Coast.
Loosing to them, was just simply an attempt to justify that.
I still think that we have a pretty solid list and to have a insightful and cunning coach such as Malthouse on our side would only enhance our chances of winning a premership sooner rather than later.
Most teams only have a 5-6 year window where they are guenuine premiership contenders, and I think we are pretty much in the window now, if all goes our way in regards to luck and injuries so if we have the chance to improve those odds, I say go for it, it could have been handled with a little more tact than it was.

Half of Ratten's problem is that he never had the opportunity to work with a good coach and see how they operate. He never had the apprenticeship. He went to an ordinary club for a little while then ended up taking up the Carlton job a little early. He started as a rookie coach at a club with no leadership. Unlike Chris Scott who walked into a club oozing with leadership and players who are basically coaching the team. Carlton had a big clean out of assistants for older assistants a few years back and did it poorly. IMO they got the wrong people and I don't think it helped Ratten at all. He probably could have been a really good coach had he had the proper development and chance to learn the trade under a top coach instead of throwing himself into the deep end and learn from scratch. He'd probably make an excellent assistant somewhere.

Mick can bring Cam Wood with him after he passed up the chance to draft Callan Ward, Scott Selwood or Harry Taylor.

My favourite Malthouse trade was Mick downgrading pick seven for pick ten (Chris Egan) and Bowman Nixon. Hawks drafted Jordan Lewis with pick seven.

The Eagles drafted LeCras with the pick Mick traded for Chad Morrison.

Jolly for 14 and whatever, Ball for pick 30 and Tarrant for pick 8 and Medhurst are the only trades/recruiting moves he's nailed.

Trading Mal Michael for Molloy was a pearler.

Ratten's trading misses aren't as bad as Malthouse's blunders.

Are you implying that MM was responsible for picking Egan?

How is it the perfect time for Scotto to move on?!? He's playing fantastic, consistent football. One of the FEW players doing so.

I highly doubt Malthouse would move him on because of a personality conflict.

I don't know about the truth of this claim, but I think they downgraded their pick in the belief they would still get their man, only to miss out.

In the end, they didn't get Lewis who is obviously a better footballer than Egan. And would be in their side ahead of Blair or Macaffer.

Admittedly they were lucky to finish 4th in 2002 with 13 wins, 9 losses (1 and a half less wins than Ratten got last year when we finished 5th, and the exact same number of wins Ratten coached us to in 2009 when we finished 7th) and were lucky in that they played an injury ravaged Adelaide (at the MCG), and faced an epic choke from Port to get there (who choked again the following year letting the Pies into the GF).
