Who said anything about Ratten being a better coach than Malthouse?

An operator as canny as McGuire wouldn't sack a coach who was still up to it.

Perhaps we should consider that Malthouse is a great manager of people. Malthouse's brand has attracted the best assistant coaches Collingwood's could buy. Ratten couldn't attract the same people to work with him. Their success isn't all about Mick, rather than the work Hine, Walsh, Pert, McGuire, Mick, Neeld, Buckley, Watters, Lappin, etc. did for the Pies as a team.

Ultimately, Malthouse will only be as good as the assistants and staff our money can buy for him.

Do you think Ratten is a better coach than Malthouse or not? First two sentences seem to be backing both sides of the coin!
How is it that you so quickly came to hate the thought of MM coaching us (and knowing you - the man who never ever changes his favourites we can look forward to you dogging him for years) and yet can be so in love with the ENEMY in Eddie - oh yeah, it suits your opinion LOL
I hated Malthouse for his Collingwood passion but I would never doubt his coaching ability
I would not be surprised if 2 main assistants stay on as part of MM's team. And if you don't realize that coaches need to great managers of people - ah forget it . Please don't crap on about MM having better staff than Ratts
Last correction needed is to your last line of crap should read :MM will only be as good as the potential of the players on our list.

Well no. Takes a while to embrace somebody as 'one of our own'.

I'll sit back and let him do his job as a professional coach, as I did with Pagan. Pagan's leap killed Brittain but Brittain was low profile and anybody may have killed him after our first wooden spoon. Mick's public musings about coaching hunger have killed a true Carlton person after what may have been a one season year from hell.

Will Mick have passion for our club, our history, our supporters, the moment he signs on the dotted line? No. Will he have passion and professionalism towards his role? You'd think so.

That's where he sits until we hear more from him, until he grows into the place. Parkin was 'that Hawthorn bloke' when he first came to the club. Luckily he had a gun side behind him and we won two flags immediately. Quickly accepted into the fold after that.

We all know one thing though. Mick has put his reputation on the line here. We are not too accepting of outsiders coming into the joint and stinking up the place.

Sheez. Stinking up the place - get over it Ratts is GONE (bring back Witherspoon).
Accepted into the fold - HE WILL BE THE LEADER of the fold
Will Mick have passion for our club, blah blah blah - he has passion for football!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How do you think so many people in AFL, Metro, Country football can go from club to club being successes

And maybe those of us who are railing against the club getting MM are just doing it to piss off those 'supporters' who have been knifing Ratts for the past 5 years.

If we get MM and if he doesnt come in and win 23 games in the H&A season and every game in the finals and bring home #17... I want him sacked because he is useless. If he has an injury wracked season like we have just endured and doesnt win #17... I want him sacked because he doesnt have a plan B...

Isnt that how it works? Now hop on your tricycle and trundle off into the sunset.

PS: just for the sake of arguments... I support the club and their decisions. if they appoint MM, I will support their decision and I will continue to back the appointed coach because he is working for Carlton.
I have not been knifing Ratts for years. I think a lot of you are upset because you have never been able to stand BRIB and GS and now that they have got what they wanted you are in your own words ACTING LIKE A BABY (doing it to Piss of people)
For someone not even in the country you have carried on like someone who needs a life.
Forget the sunsets and trundling - you're not Thy, you cannot pull it off

Like you do with me, but not your mate.

Did Ratten attract the likes of Richardson, Watters, Neeld, etc. as assistants after he signed with Carlton as coach?

You're the one crapping on if you think one man can coach 42 people on his own without great assistants.

You need to open your brain more than trap if you think potential coaches don't flock to a coaching great to learn from the best. Worsfold and Lyon started under Parkin who learnt from John Kennedy. Walls learnt from Barrassi. Ratten from Parkin.

I hate the idea of appointing coach without looking at alternatives and considering he's still the man.

Can you say Denis Pagan?

Don't know why Malthouse being better than Ratten means he's still a potential premiership coach.

Find it very hard 2 believe that MM coaching Carlton isn't done & dusted. I'm a Ratt's fan and don't agree with the sacking, but if MM comes off with a premiership then the board has made the decision that got us 17. And we all want that.

But if 17 doesn't come off then no point having an audit, the Blues better change their culture. We're still acting like it's the 1970 & early 1980s, where $$$$ buys players & premierships. Football's moved on, money sure helps, but with salary cap pressures & draft picks you've got to play smart - Carlton's reaction to disappointment isn't to adapt to the new system and show patience, it's sack the coach, we never stick fat. Sure, the AFL took away draft picks etc, but it's because we couldn't adapt to the new world. And because we don't adapt we look for a scapegoat - we've sacked premiership coaches like Parkin, Walls, we've got rid of Brittain one year after he got us into the finals with an average list, and Ratt's who in five years took us from last to finals three times. Ratt's record has got to be one of the best going round, and anyone who thinks we've got the best list going round hasn't been watching other clubs play.

Probably the three best teams of the last 6 or 7 years, Geelong, Collingwood & Hawthorn, all showed faith in their coaches when things didn't look good (MM had been at the Pies for over a decade). Why? Because they saw the coach could build something with the players they had, they gave the coach time to trail & error game plans until finding the best plan that suited the players they have, or even top-up with borderline players from other clubs (ie. Sydney Swans). The Blues, on the other hand, have one disappointing season and shoot Ratts. The board acts like rich kids who have never had to work hard for anything because it's always given to them, and throw tantrum & sack someone when some hard yards are required. Problem is, as Collingwood, Hawthorn & Geelong have shown, you need to do the hard yards. Our way of doing things has given us 1 premiership since the salary cap come in and the current draft system come in. I hope we get number 17, but if we don't it's our own fault.
Spot on. Especially the bolded. We are still stuck in the past. And so are many of our supporters I suspect.

I agree with BRIB.

If we don't get a name coach after this, then Kernahan, the board and Swann will be under the pump after sacking the coach they re-appointed for years. They can't sack an experienced coach and bring in a green coach such as Scott Burns who will need a new team of assistants. Harder to see a new coach attracting as many wannabe coaches as Malthouse, Roos, Thompson, Worsfold, Williams, etc. They're not going to prise these premiership coaches way from their clubs.
I agree that we should get a name coach... but there are a couple of them out there.

What happens if we get Williams or Bomber or Roos? Does Sticks and Swann still have to go... because we didnt get Malthouse as BRIB said?

You misunderstood. I hope he doesn't make cuts based on a few games he has seen. He will need to talk to people and he will need to be at the club early enough to review tapes and talk to players.

You think 12 players will be cut? Teams barely do that if they finish in the cellar. If he did do that, he can go and get screwed. It would be reactionary and stupid, sight unseen.
For Christ's sake ODN - he is a pro. You don't think he would live football and watch tape after tape. You don't think he would be listening to old mates Brown and Richardson.
And now you are telling him to get screwed because some poster suggested as many as 12 will go. Your not being reactionary and stupid are you

Did I say that you were one of those out there knifing Ratts?

Geez some people are ****ing precious with thin skins.

Spot on. Especially the bolded. We are still stuck in the past. And so are many supporters I suspect.

I suspect some of you guys are spending too long on Big Footy and getting sucked in to believing the tripe that gets posted on here from others - not to mention the media.

It's such a cliche - any time Carlton decide to do anything - recruit Judd, get a new coach, everyone trots out the old "Carlton stuck in the 70's line - trying to buy premierships etc' . We are allowed to make changes.

Look, the board looked closely at Ratts and decided he didn't have what it takes to beat the Top 4 sides and so moved him on to get someone who they think will have what it takes. Simple as that.

Coach: Settle down. :)

Malthouse won't be coming to our club to make a fool of himself.
If he is given everything he needs, he will sign and get on with business. It's as simple as that.

For those still pining for Ratten, ask yourselves this: What were you going to sell the members next year?
It was a footballing decision to let Ratten go to some extent, but it may have just as much been a business decision. Unfortunately they are bound more than we may like them to be.

Yeah if that interview is anything to go by he def has "the bug" as they called it.

Did his best to sound completely neutral but you could tell he was hiding something. Was a nice relaxed interview at least though.

Like you do with me, but not your mate.
Raving on like a lunatic with no relevance to my post - will you be hounding MM forever more if he gets the gig? Will you ever give Scotland a vote (or not vote the weeks he plays well ;))? Will Army ever be a footballer?

Did Ratten attract the likes of Richardson, Watters, Neeld, etc. as assistants after he signed with Carlton as coach?

Where the **** did you pull that from. Did some little voice in your head tell you to say I thought that. You are the one criticizing MM by giving all the credit to his assistants. My point about the players potential being more important because it is a given that MM will have decent assistants - he is a pro

You need to open your brain more than trap if you think potential coaches don't flock to a coaching great to learn from the best. Worsfold and Lyon started under Parkin who learnt from John Kennedy. Walls learnt from Barrassi. Ratten from Parkin.
Everybody on BF knows that there is nobody with a brain as closed as yours - once they are a fav or a non fave then they remain that way until the world ends. May I suggest you take a long holiday when MM is appointed. As for the rest of this paragraph:What relevance has this got to you claiming it is the assistants not MM who has had success in the past?

I hate the idea of appointing coach without looking at alternatives and considering he's still the man.

The quip about is MM a better coach than Ratten was directed at all who cannot seem to be able to accept the fact that Ratts is gone and maybe they can console themselves by realizing we will not be appointing somebody inferior to Ratts

No, I can think for myself thanks. And make my own judgments while I am at it.

I read very little football media and watch little in the way of football shows on TV.

And I can't say I am particularly swayed by BF opinion.

The decision to sack Ratten reeks of quick fix and the "buy success" mentality that used to work 20-30 years ago.

The club simply hasn't moved forward into modern times. We are dinosaurs.

I will try to settle - just cannot believe the crap that some are spouting :confused:o_O:thumbsu:

Your posts are all the same mate, you sounds like a broken record going around and around.
Are you a Carlton supporter or what. The board has made a decision whether you like it or not.
Time to move on and hope that the right decision was made. Nothing ventured nothing gained.

This is a key point I feel, regardless how one feels about the Ratts decision.

It's happened, he's gone (after tomorrow). Nothing can change that, we have to look to the future.

What'd he say in the interview?
