Are you a Carlton supporter or what. The board has made a decision whether you like it or not.
Time to move on and hope that the right decision was made. Nothing ventured nothing gained.

Why shouldn't I be a Carlton supporter? Because I am being critical of a decision made a couple of days ago?

It's still fresh. Yes I am still annoyed about it. Get back to me if I am still complaining about it months down the track.

Questioning someone's loyalty as a supporter because they dare criticize aspects of the club and certain decisions it makes is as weak as piss.

Did his best to say he's undecided and needs to take family into account etc, as we expected him to say I suppose, but he seemed to want to make it very clear he still believes he still has what it takes to coach and if the openings are there, he'd be nuts to not consider them (not in those exact words).

If rumours are correct Malthouse has the job, however IMO his support staff are just as important, I hope Carlton go hammer and tongs for either and or all of Scott Burns/Adam Simpson/Goodwin I think they would be great. I would like to be an innovative club with fresh ideas that the players buy into.

No, I said he would need to get to the club earlier than October as has been touted, in order to view video tapes, talk to the players and so forth or else he is not going to be able to make an informed decision on many of our players. If he was going to come in swinging the axe without doing his homework, then he could get screwed.

I reckon you gloss over my posts Coach, then decide to go the attack based on what you think I am saying rather than what I actually said.

I was calling for the professionalism, which honestly, would not take place if he shows up when the players are on holidays and just before trade week. Failing that he would have to listen to whatever assistants are left. I really don't want players cut based on an outsiders perception, rather than first hand knowledge.

Feel free to let me know exactly what part you disagree with.

Stinking up the place is referring to failure Coach. If he comes in and fails, he will cop it quicker being an outsider than a true Carlton man would. Do you disagree? The club have made a big show of this, the media have made a big show of it, some of our supporters have made a big show of it, and Malthouse himself has been posturing for some time about this.

Leader of the fold? Was Ratts afforded that respect over the last couple of years? Sorry, I pay my money, he can earn my respect. I won't be one sitting here every week dissecting his tactics, and lobbying for his sacking until I get my way, unlike what Ratts has been copping around here. I may draw parallels between the two if they exist though.

Mick wont cut 12 players if he coaches us. I suspect he knows our current list better than what anyone is giving him credit for and a few players will go and this is no different to any other year regardless of the coach.

Mick has a great football brain and keen eye for potential and excels at getting the best out of 2nd tier players which in reality are the playing group that decide 99% of the time how well you perform every year. Everyone knows our guns like Juddy , Murph , Waite etc etc will always perform but it is the performances of the 2nd tier group that is telling and if ordinary players find new veins of form and lift and are filled with confidence we will do well and this is MM's greatest coaching strength IMO.

For those still pining for Ratten, ask yourselves this: What were you going to sell the members next year?

Hopefully a competent marketing and membership department. We were told they were fixing these things and it would take time. What did the Tigers sell their members this year? Super high profile Damian Hardwick's 3rd year?

I do understand the need to sell hope and that was one of the reasons I thought Ratts might be on the way out a couple of months ago. It shouldn't be that way though. Most clubs' members do not need a playing or coaching coup in order to sign up. We can't do it every time our membership figures stagnate so again, we have to tap into our latent support in a more permanent way.

I can only assume you are referring to my avatar, right? The fact that I have it means I have not got over it and you want me to get rid of it to show I am over it? Is there a more logical explanation?

Actually, the fold is the whole Carlton community in my book. He won't be the leader of that.

My version of the fold runs along the lines of passion for the club, its history and its traditions. It takes time for anybody to work their way into the fold. As I have explained in the last day or so, Parko was known as 'that Hawthorn bloke' when he first came to Carlton. Now he is coach of our team of the century. He speaks with passion about Carlton a decade after leaving the club, and despite his Hawthorn playing and coaching career, he is easily just as identifiable as a Carlton person. He is part of the fold. Mick when he first walks into the club, will be a Carlton employee, a professional football coach empowered to improve our onfield stocks. I will consider him as such. I'm not going to feel like he is a Carlton person right off the bat though. I've heard nothing from him for me to think that as yet.

Of course there is always a concern if things don't work out, but that shouldn't paralyze us for striving to be the best.
I guess I just try to put myself in others' shoes and all considered, I can appreciate why the changes have been made.

Hardwick? Now that the Tigers look on the move, if they for whatever reason go backwards next year, Hardwick will find it difficult to stay on. Same goes for Hird.
We know that, they know that and Ratten knew it when things started going pear-shaped for him.

The buddy-buddy part of me wishes that Ratten was retained, but the business side of me appreciates why he wasn't.
It's tricky and it may be risky, but I understand the reasoning and now look forward to the future.

Well I expect him to be. However, he is saying he won't look at anything until October when other commitments are finished and I believe he needs to do some due diligence before that, to get an accurate picture.

Even Pagan did precious little with our list when he first arrived and went off the recommendations of assistant coaches, because he said it would be unfair on the players. I feel he should either arrive earlier and do his homework or at least not be making list decisions alone (regardless of how professional he is). This was a full conversation I was having with Azul earlier. It doesn't go well if parts of it are being cherry picked.

Yep I am wrong - you guys are being completely rational. I did not come onto this thread looking for a fight but was disappointed in how some are going on about MM - the reason being that I cannot see how this board is going to function once he is made coach. There have been exaggerated claims that Ratts has been knifed on this board for 5yrs - there may have been a couple of posters but find me a board where there are not a couple do that sort of crap. In the future however I predict that this will be commonplace as some of our biggest posters are so vehemently against MM coaching. I will give up now - yeah I said that your Ratts avatar was disrespectful - if you can say that and seriously argue that my words suggested 'disrespect' (who the bloody hell to?) I would not even be sure you would agree our jumpers to be navy blue

Buying coaches to sell memberships won't make us the best though. We can't do that every 5 years. Building a solid sustainable platform will make us the best and that is what I would prefer to see.

I can see why the changes have been made. I can see why Sticks thinks it was a close and harsh call as well. What I can't fathom is the whole 'Ratts is gone, get over it, embrace the messiah' vibe that some are expousing. Nobody has even walked in the door yet and Ratts is still our coach until the siren blows tomorrow and he finishes addressing the team after the game.

That wasn't what I was talking about though Harks. You asked what we were going to sell the members next year if the decision wasn't made. I was asking what the Tigers were selling the members this year to surpass us in memberships. They didn't make any big moves. They just don't take as much convincing as Carlton supporters do. We need to tap into the latent support, without gimmicks, big moves every 5 years etc.

I will see what happens. What I will recognise is that Ratten has taken us to a point. I would hate for that not to be recognised in the future if we do have some success, because Malthouse is not walking into a basketcase of a club and having to build from scratch. There is just so much pedestal placing going on right now, and I'm not enjoying being called out because I do not have Malthouse on a pedestal as yet. It's not a cult. I'm not abusing the guy, I'm just not embracing him in the current climate.

I'm not happy with losing Ratten, or the way he was treated. But I've been through a few things in life that have forced me to move on and when I put that into perspective, I can find the ability to just accept that he's gone.

What I won't accept is the club lying to its supporters and treating them like fools. Gonna take me a long time to get over this. If Malthouse doesn't deliver I'm not sure I ever will. I appreciate that they want things to change and they're willing to take risks, but the way they've handled it is very amateur like and imo disrespectful.

Mick has to be CLEARLY better than Ratten before I start believing in him as one of our own because if he sets us backwards, expect serious repurcussions across the whole board. If Mick doesn't deliver then try and sell memberships, see how far you get.

We're going to look like even bigger dick heads if Ratten goes to Port and turns them around while we start going backwards under Mick.

It's not about the last word, but if you keep having the first word and then the next word, and leave something that needs to be addressed, then you can think of it as a mood if you like. I just like to bring clarity to what people think I said.

You brought up my avatar, you said that Ratts was gone, get over it in the same sentence. Not a lot I can get out of a negative avatar inference other than it was a problem somehow. Let's not get hung up on the word 'disrespectful'. Swap that for 'negative context' if that makes it better.

Yes I believe the call on Ratts was harsh, but so does the president who helped make the decision. Yes, I want to ensure that Ratts gets the respect due to him. Yes, I believe that MM made it obvious he wanted Ratten's job. Most neutrals would agree. I also believe that the club have made the decision in order to obtain a flag in the next couple of years, so there are great expectations on MM to finish the job Ratten started, in order to justify the decision. Sticks flat out said we wanted a flag while Judd was still around. People can correct me if they think I have got something wrong here. I don't think I have said anything unreasonable. I'm just more circumspect, and turning less cartwheels than most, partly because I think Ratten could have lead us forward, partly because Malthouse contributed to his demise, partly because Malthouse is acting as though he has no idea what is going on.

Everything else, I will take as it comes. If we win a flag, I will celebrate as much as anybody else, but I will never apologise for any initial misgivings based on information at hand.

Geez, it's a touch frosty in here. Must we all argue round and round in circles? Making me dizzy and I'm not keen on falling on my arse.

Let's sit on our hands and wait and see what happens. Whether you agree with it or not, the horse's been dragged out the back and the bullet blown. I feel for Ratten as the events of the year weren't entirely his fault (injuries were an insurmountable burden in the end) but the prospect of Malthouse coaching the club excites me greatly.

Forget all this hoorah about the Mick coming across the enemy. He has a passion for the game and a way for people. What Mick does best is what we've struggled with - he's brilliant at getting the best out of his players.
