Glen Jackovich was the greatest defender of his time by miles. Pretty sure he would have a lot to teach the guys in Carlton's current backline.
Not all great players can teach though. Being able to do something yourself, doesn't mean you have the ability to extract the same instincts out of others. For a start, players have physical differences and different strengths and weaknesses. Then you have to look at how the game is seldom one on one these days and that is where Jakovich excelled. He has limited coaching experience despite being the best defender of his generation as you say. I'd disagree with that by the way, best CHB perhaps, but fullbacks like Silvagni would be better and Langford would go close.

Seems to be bringing in a lot of (rumoured) inexperienced people though, and pushing out quite a few with experience, i understand we need change, and the new coach will want to pick his assistants, but i think the club are just too much in the MM basket and don't like the way they've done it ......very expensive process all this.

I agree but they tie assistant contracts to the senior coach contract so once they removed Ratten, they have little choice but to go the extra mile. It's all on their head.

I'd like the club to get a good experienced assistant under Malthouse to replace Richo, not just people that won't pose a threat to Micks job.

It's weird because Mick's job would not be under threat from an assistant coach. If he fails within 3 years, he will get an extra 2 just so we don't look like we made a mistake. At Mick's age, he should be thinking of this as a last stint, not a job to protect.

*i think the club are wrong in keeping Barker. i wasn't happy when we originally got him and i haven't seen anything to change that....but thats just my opinion.

I agree but for him to be one of the survivors, somebody somewhere is supporting him.

Lets be honest SOS is not the greatest speaker in the world yet did wonders with the StKilda defence... Ross Lyon talks like he's stoned and look what he can do... the head coach who is the figurehead needs to be eloquent for media purposes but behind closed doors players don't care if you say tomato or tomatoe... they understand... "see ball, get ball.... smash player!"...

Silvagni was great, so was Guy Mckenna. But in the West Coast premiership years of the early 90s, Jako was the standout defender in the game. I don't know how I would compare Silvagni and Jako's careers, because I didn't see much of Silvagni back in the day. They are both great though. And you are right with regards to playing ability not always translating to coaching ability, but I am confident Jako would make a great defensive coach. I wouldn't discount him based on his lack of eloquence.

Wish they all did understand that. Some of ours certainly didn't this year.
Huh ... smash player?

Are you trying to communicate that you wish me to approach the contest, and therefore the opposition player, with an increased level of vigour, so as to potentially cause them temporary discomfort, or worse still, actual injury? I guess I can try. Any tips on the velocity and angle I shall approach at, so at to avoid the possibility of suspension and the associated removal of personal award qualification, and more importantly, to minimise the risk of potential harm to myself?

You can compare their careers by looking at Silvagni's 5 AA selections and team of the century selection. Jakovich had two AA selections IIRC. He was a very good defender and certainly had form bursts that made him the best at a given time. SOS also good claim times when he was the best. There is no argument that has Jakovich standing out compared to SOS career wise.

I took that as meaning going in hard, not shirking the contest, in the manner of someone like Robbo, or indeed the entire Hawthorn team...

I don't advocate thuggery but I do like the idea of unsociable as opposed to bruise free footy. The style that wins finals and flags.

Does that clear it up?

Take your mind back 12 months ago. Ross Lyon was chased and then signed a lucrative deal for 5 years with Fremantle in what was an audacious move on Fremantle's behalf. They held a Press conference and got over all of the controversy because they sacked Harvey, and then the fall out from St.Kilda and then straight into it. Picked the players he wanted, got his team together and started teaching the players about his game plan. Class act by the Fremantle administration and Ross Lyon, and not coincidental that they are playing for Preliminary final spot.
Meanwhile back at Princes Park..... On seperate note if anyone hasn't seen the 'Damned United' get your hands on it and watch it. Absolutely brilliant.

Malthouse set to ink deal with Carlton tomorrow

MICK Malthouse will formally be announced as Carlton Football Club coach at 10am tomorrow morning.
Malthouse, 59, will front a press conference at Visy Park where details of a three-year deal will be tabled.

His assistant coaching staff will not be formalised at tomorrow’s meeting, and at this stage Paul Williams, Mark Riley and Alan Richardson have not been officially sacked.

But all have been told that there are no guarantees and if other opportunities arise then they should look at them.

Malthouse will not begin official duties until late October.

Sorry, I was speaking as a Carlton player who was not quite getting it.

Agree media performance is irrelevant. However, being an effective teacher is important. Robert Harvey has been moved on twice because of his poor communication with players especially at Seaford.

Mick commencing official duties in late October, eh?

The trade supereon opens October 8 and finishes on October 26. Judging by trade weeks past, Mick can stroll in on the last day and commence negotiations. :thumbsu:

I wonder if he'll give channel 7 an early scoop on tonight's news.

Filth is an appropriate description. How does the forum allow that scum to name the Port Player that died?
Tragic for the family and a parents worst nightmare.
