There was a bloke by the name of Bruce Doull who went alright. CHB in our 1972, 1979 & 1981 premiership teams & FB in our 1982 premiership team. Named at HB in both the Carlton & AFL Team of the Century, yet played most his football as a KPD. Jakovich wouldn't even be in the same ball park as Doull.
I'm a big Doull fan and I thought he was awesome as a CHB for the club.I rate Doull even more highly than SOS. Pound for pound probably the best defender I've seen play. *
For me, what made SOS so great is that he played on and beat a range of champion forwards in a range of different positions; from Hird and Carey at HB to Ablett, Dunstall and Lockett down deep. All very different players.
* Warning: Unabashed Bruce Doull fan with incredible bias.

I am also a big SoS fan and as full back for the club, I think that he was actually second to Southby. What got SoS the nod really was the fact he could switch forward and kick goals.

Well today's the day. It feels a little bit like a mix of Christmas morning and Groundhog day.
I wasn't talking about Silvagni just now though, only about my esteem for Jako at his peak. Silvagni would be the first choice for FB, but I think Jako would make a strong case for CHB. McKenna would find a sport in my HBF as well. Of course, I haven't lived long enough to make any real valid argument about team of the century, none of us have really, but I'd be surprised if there were too many players better at that CHB position than Jakovich.

He has not taken the reigns at all yet. Nothing announced. As of right this second, he is an outsider.
Not really the same thing as the current coach, one that has shown passion for the club, being ripped on whilst in the job.
Once he is in place, let's see how many pro-Ratts people are saying MM is a dud, that he should piss off etc. That would be a better irony call ... yes?
Having said that, MM is here to replace a coach who had 3 years of finals and a bad injury year in his last year. MM has to
improve on that quickly or some reasoned discussions may start occurring.
That's pretty good spin for a whole bunch of negativity.
I loved ratten. Did some great things. Also arguably underachieved. Two straight sets finals losses and a tough secod round loss isn't a great record. Not terrible though, by all means. I think it's neither a travesty or a fantastic thing that he is gone. Top bloke, bleeds navy. Really though, that's not why you make decisions.
The essendon, port, and GC losses stamped his papers. Even injured, we should've won those games and played finals. I wish him well at port or gws.
But as i did when he came in, I'll get right behind MM and the Carlton FC.

Great Post Dramoth.
Bruce Doull was a Legend and people sadly have forgotten how good he was, his name should always be mentioned when talking of Great Defenders, i only ever remember 1 player getting the better of the Flying Doormat, and that was Sticks Kernahan in a State Game between Victoria and South Australia. As for Southby, he was my Favorite player as a kid and had Mum stitching the number 20 on the back of my Jumper in the Late 70s..
Now Hopefully one of our Defenders turn into a Doull or Southby under Mick Malthouse..

He won a b&f at 34 and a Norm Smith at 31 which would have to be close to the oldest.
