so glad we (Pies fans) dont have to defend Malthouse 'comments' anymore!! :D

That would be a relief. Reckon Malthouse can keep his trap shut?! There's, er, Buckley's chance of that!

Today's players are probably all better than anyone from 50+ years ago, and better than most from 20+ years ago.

Better junior development, training techniques, nutrition, professionalism do all have a noticable effect. (and they're just bigger)

That's not to say that the players of yesteryear, put into a modern environment wouldn't be as good or better than current players...Fair chance they would, but you really just can't compare between eras. You can only look at how a player was compared to his peers, and how he was regarded at the time.

Whitten was regarded as a great of the period he played, therefore he's a great of the game.

That said, I think 'legend' status should be granted to even fewer than it currently is.

I hate MM more than most. I'd happily accelerate my car if I saw him crossing the road if I thought I could clip him.

Having said that, he was caught out thinking aloud and there's not much more to it than that.

Just on that where does Buckley stand using MM's criteria. 2 GF winning SFA except a Norm Smith. Now if Whitten isn't a Legend, Buckley's a horse's behind.

Perhaps then Mick was having an oblique shot at Buckley......

How many of you actually saw him play ? I know for sure I didn't but just looking at his stats and what he achieved in his career and in his life I'd say he should be called a legend no doubt.

Edit: Malthouse lied to the media saying he didn't call Milne a rapist remember ? He's a ********. The way he said that Whitten wasn't a legend. IMO were completely genuine.

So if a player doesn't play in a premiership they can't be called a legend ? So Buckley can't be called a great of the modern era because he never won a premiership ?

He is an overrated coach, a liar and hypocrite.*

*Yes he is entitled to an opinion but to say Whitten isn't a legend is stupidity.

As a person? Dunno about that. Whitten was one of the biggest knobs I've ever met. Multiplied when he was pissed.

Legend of the game, though.

HAD obviously knew Teddy and knows Mick quite well, else he wouldn't have made such a comment!

I only know what I have seen. I know Malthouse called a player a rapist and then lied about it, I know he abuses and intimidates young journalists who are just doing their job, I also know he calls young players from other teams cheats. I think that's enough to get an insight into what kind of person you are dealing with.

No disputing he is a great coach, and from all reports, treats his players very well. But there has been a few to many incidents like the ones I highlighted above, to make me think he is anything other than a prick. Great coach though like I said.

Whitten is 5 x the football person Malthouse is. As a player and as a person, Whitten beats Malthouse hands down.

Not too sure about the bolded bit, there's some skeletons in the Whitten closet. They've been mentioned in other threads before.

I was 4 or 5 when Teddy finished playing so can't comment on his abilities, only from the press / media I've read / watched.

Do people on here honestly think that Mick wasn't aware of how many games Ted played or that he was a Premiership player? You lot are kidding yourselves.

A title he never deserved. He was Mr Ted Whitten, first, second & third. I would happily suggest that Lou Richards did more for the game than what Whitten did & Ron Barassi outstrips both of them.

He was an old school footballers footballer that the people related to, you could argue players like Skilton or any of the players listed above or many more could claim the title, but in 50yrs time when no one knows who you or I were, they will remember Ted as Mr Football.
Those saying he had skeletons in his closet should remember not many if any wouldnt if you dug deep enough.

:thumbsu: By the way MM head is far up his own A@# I'm not surprised he didn't know Mr Football was a premiership player. Time for MM to go the way of MS. Does anybody really want to hear the crap that comes from his mouth.

The thing I dont get is Malthouse is a bulldog himself. Even if he thought it you would think he had some respect and say nothing at all. What am I missing?

Semantics perhaps? Ted Whitten only played in the VFL and the AFL is supposed to be more than VFL with non-Victorian teams tacked on. But without the context of the article/quote, I have no idea...
Ted Whitten was a good VFL player.
The VFL was always a stronger league than the SANFL and WAFL but not near as strong as the AFL with all states combined.
Leigh Matthews also only played VFL.Wayne Carey and to a lesse r extent Gazza Snr are the real legends.

29 State of Origin games against the best national players. There are legends that played longer than 20 years ago

It’s always sacrilegious to bring it up, but I must admit I have always wondered if Ted’s larger-than-life post-football career may have added to his reputation as a player somewhat.

You don’t play 300 games unless you’re bloody good but I’d like to know just how good he was. So few saw him play it’s always hard to know. Long shot but anyone here actually see him in action?

Having had some dealings with Ted Whitten after he finished playing Im with you - he was a great promoter of "MR Football" IE himself.

Malthouse would have seen Whitten play when he was much better than average player and a terrible coach- the best VFL ever player = NO.

He would also have seen Whitten in another light when he was BS himself around FFC telling anyone that bothered to listen how good a player he was and yes I saw him play many times - on his day he could be brilliant in mostly poor Footscray teams so of course he would stand out but he tended to be a loudmouth and as he lingered way past his prime a sniper on the field.

The umpires never gave him many Brownlow votes as they saw him up close.

I love how 29 state of origin games proves that Whitten is a legend (which he is)- but Austin Robertson can't even get into the regular Hall of Fame...

To be honest, I have always thought that Whitten has been overrated.. he did a lot for football but from what I have been told he is nothing compared to what some say he is. Real legends like Lloyd and Hird are still around and not getting the respect they deserve
