Now that I think about it Penny and someone like Hunter have every ingredient neccesary to be top class backman. They are both tall and very quick. If we could get someone to show them the ropes then we could have a great backline.Dont know that Micky would be the best teacher though.Originally posted by The Doctor
The way I see it there are good reasons for and against,
For:
The Bulldogs are short in height and lack expertise in defence. A fit Martyn would help fix these problems. His experience and premiership know how would have a positive effect upon our younger key position defenders like Luke Penny. Penny and other possibles at the club don''t have a genuine key defender at the club to teach them the elementry skills of AFL defence. Croft and Kretiuk have played virtually their entire careers out of position and really shouldn't have to pass on the trouble of their careers to a new generation of players. Martyn would bring his knowledge to the younger players and show them what it takes.
Against
martyn is at the very end of his AFL career. He is battle scarred and weary from years of toil against the competitions best forwards. His pace has slowed and although the mind and heart may be willing the legs are not. He would still probably hold his own against the less mobile forwards but would be slaughtered against the likes of Lloyd and Tarrant.
The Doctor's solution
If he was available with the last pick of the pre season draft then grab him. He would have a positive influence upon the younger players and teach them how to play in defence.
If not bring him to the club as the Defence coach. We really need some modern day expertise with our defence coaching and the current system is clearly not working. Martyn is one of the best from the modern era. He is mean, tough, durable and has played in 2 premierships. He would teach Penny, Hunter and whoever else the finer arts of how to play in defence at the highest level and give them some real grunt.
My solution to this is make Mick Martyn the Bulldogs Defence coach.
