Don't be stupid.

I haven't read the article but I'm assuming that the club would have known for a while now. They've stated earlier in the year, that they will assess what that position means and what it's role is and whether Mick or the club finds it worthy then they will go ahead with it. Obviously Mick does not think that this role will be a positive for the club. He's not running, why would he stay and get in the way just to fulfill his contract?

When would he mention it? Before the game? Before the finals series?

He didn't drop anybody because they were playing 1 tall forward and that was Hawkins. Apart from Hawkins, we have Tarrant and judging Hawkins form no one else would have been able to run with him. And Tarrant was on Johnson unless you suggest Reid play on Johnson or any other small/medium forward.

Sorry my mistake...clearly you must think leaving Reid on Hawkins was the right move...even after he pushed off him with ease.

I am sick of the Taz on Johnson matchup as a reason we lost a Grand Final. Changes HAD to be made...you swing palyers around...don't let Geelong isolate Reid and Hawkins FFS...ffs Johnson was taking Taz OUT OF CONTESTS.

Scott made the switch on Cloke immediately he started to dominate and they double teamed him at times.

But we sat on our hands and did nothing.

hey, that's ok...Maybe Reid will learn from it...oh no wait we already should of learned from it since Hawkins smashed us in Round 24!!!!!!

I'll praise a coach when he deserves it and last week MM was brilliant in the with moves. Today he was back to the same stubborn shit.

I hope Buck's has the balls to pick teams on merit and not past reputation.

Good riddens, seriously. He agreed to a contract 2 years ago, and decided to stay on as coach for the first part of that contract, then when it came to something that was for the betterment of this football club, and not himself, he decided to run. I'm extremely disappointed as a Collingwood supporter in Michael Malthouse. He has a large paying contract with the footy club, and he is choosing not to honour it. We don't need that at the Collingwood Football Club. I might sound like I'm overdoing it, but its the truth, and Collingwood supporters choose not to see it because he won us a flag last year.

Time to change your signature :D

I'm not saying whether it was the right or wrong move, I'm just explaining why Mick would be hesistant to make that chance and in the end he did. There's no crystal ball to tell us what would happen if Mick had made that change earlier, but there are signs of what could possibly happen.

And Chris Scott could easily make that change on Cloke because he had Lonergan, Scarlett and Taylor at his disposal. It just shows how our forward line needs to work together to help out Cloke when he's being double teamed and that Brown getting injured really hurt us and Maxwell, Goldsack and Keefe need to develop into better Key Defenders for us to move forward.

Happy to see Mick go, will be a lot easier for Bucks!

Thanks for the memories over the years Mick. You got us a premiership that I'll never forget, it was the best day of my life (thus far). Thank you for that, today doesn't wipe out all the good times before today. :)

But it's time to move on, good luck Bucks! :thumbsu:

Obviously disappointing. But possibly the right move - didn't think he would be particularly comfortable playing 2nd man to Buckley.

Has been a great coach for a long time and his wishes deserve to be respected. Should be thanked for his efforts over the years because he has been a sensational coach.

Enter Rodney Eade.

I just watched the MM press conference and I have over reacted to the loss. I totally get where Mick was coming from. Reid is AA and should have had Hawkins match.

So I guess the question now is who do Collingwood have in mind for the director of coaching role?

I've thought about it alot and in my opinion, its a position we only thought about opening up to accommodate Mick. Now that he won't be accepting the role, is this job position really necessary?

We havent needed it in the past so what would this position actually bring to the club? Doesnt make sense to bring it in if there is no real need for it.

This. If we get Eade he can be the experienced person Bucks can confide in if he feels he needs advice.

Good point Pera...Eade would be good as opposition coach like Bucks was this year though.

Normally this is true but not when Reid can't get out of 3/4 pace, his running and jumping capacity is no where near right.

The Tarrant move should of been made earlier.

Fair point of view. Keeping this thought can anybody blame Malthouse for coming to the decision he came to?

The club was trying to create a role to suit him rather than him being needed for a role.

Piss poor from Mick in my view. The club was very generous to offer him a position after his coaching tenure ended, Ed made it clear his input was still needed and welcome at the club after a 12 year stint as head coach and what does he do? Spits the dummy, spends all year whining and complaining in the media to drum up more sympathy articles about him then quits not 30 minutes after his last game.

More and more clubs are using a DoC role to help out a new coach, Thompson and Hird, Craig and Neeld, there was obviously something about the arrangement that appealed. Yet Malthouse couldn't see past his own nose, it was all about him. If he didn't get the job he wanted he didn't want to be there at all. Shit you think he'd give a game to any player with an attitude like that? "Sorry Mick I want to play midfield or I won't play at all", good luck.

Absolutely spot on.
His petulance had a significant effect on our season's fadeout
. He couldn't even wait for a couple of days before turning the spotlight on himself.

Blowing his own trumpet at press conference has confirmed what I thought of him for awhile.

Thanks for being a part of our Flag, good luck in your future endeavors and good riddance.

Awfully similar to Mark Thompson at Geelong last year. Mind was not on the race and absolutely dropped the baton with the home straight to go! Thompson cost Geelong a premiership last year, and MM cost us one this year.

Mick was great for our club and I am really thankful for everything he has done for it. Hopefully next year, a fresh new face in the coaching box is the thing that will once again make our great club a force to be reckoned with. We have the list to beat anybody and with Bucks and his new ideas, hopefully we can win it next year. :)

Agree. The actual DoC position, I don't think, is even clearly clarified on what it's role actually is. I think it's either a mentor for the actual coach itself (Mark Thompson at the Dons) or someone who oversees the whole club as to how it's moving forward (I have absolutely no idea where I thought of that, I may have read it somewhere). And the latter one really only fitted Malthouse because he had been at the club for 11 years.

Anyways if Eade does become the mentor for Bucks, I guess it's all up to Bucks to make that call and he also has to assess Eades personality and see if they get along or not.

Bit harsh, Mick feels like that the role or himself can not offer anything to the club. Why waste the club's time and energy just being there? When else would he announce it? I doubt he's going to be heading back to the Westpac centre anymore, apart from a final trip to say goodbye to everyone. Might as well get it done as soon as possible and move on.

It's nothing like Mark Thompson. Mark Thompson just got up and left without any notice at all. I'm sure Mick has been saying to the club internally that he wasn't sure and gave them at least a 6 week notice.

A man has to know his limitations.... Mick is not a team player, I wouldn't be surprised if the club has asked him to leave.

I think it would have been extremely difficult in practice having Bucks trying to stamp his influence on the new era, with MM wafting around.

Perhaps if everything was humming along smoothly it coulda worked, but certainly if things got wobbly, that's when even the tiniest conversation or suggestion could have been construed as divisive and hence extremely damaging.

Very pleased the correct decision (IMO) has been made.

Plus, maybe harsh, but perhaps his better coaching days are behind him now...he was outcoached today, as he was against Hawks last week.

Bias up front. Never been a MM fan as a match day coach, although a good developer. Agree I don't think that the role the club had in mind and what he wanted was in tune. As was evidenced in an interview yesterday. "No involvement in the box, no involvement in systems, etc. That to me said if I am not coaching, don't want to be here.

Not happy to find out this morning that this decision was made six weeks ago...whilst his running around singing the praises of everyone of our assistant coaches to move on.

You cannot tell me this was not a distraction. Why even go on the footy show spewing the crap he did? He should have shut up shop and said nothing. Why let his loyal players make fools of themselves and say they believe MM will be there next year?

The club had better things to do than waste time negotiating with someone they already had a contract with.

I hope the contract does not have a payout clause and it is clean.

One of Collingwoods great coaches but MM the club comes before the individual and a quiet handover in the next couple of weeks would have been dignified.

And most of BigFooty.

It was obvious some months ago that he was not happy with how things were panning out. If he is not going to coach Pies then think it is better for Pies that he is gone from club.
No, most of BigFooty had him coaching at another club next year which was always the argument from the Pies.

There were always questions about whether Mick would be at the club next year, and I'm not surprised he won't be. I think it's good timing for Buckley to take over, and unlike other rookie coaches he's been at the club working with all his assistants already, and has a great supporting team already there.

Don't blame him, he said the role involved no coaching duties and no match day duties. Can't imagine him being at a club and and being denied those things. Would be a dream jobs for most being paid a shipload to do whatever at a football club. But I can't see it being fulfilling for Malthouse.
