Just heard it on 2GB. There's a press conference with Roosy and Magic. They expect him to announce his retirement at the end of the year.

Hopefully no injuries pop up and we can get him to 300 games with him still kicking goals. Absolute legend of the club and it will be sad to see him go.

Now we'll have Kirky saying "do it for Mago" in every game. The flag is as good as ours :D

This is upseting news. Micky O has been at the Swans for as long as i have been watching AFL. It will be sad not to see him in the Red and White next year.

This was always going to be his last year, I just hope to god he doesn't pick up an injury along the way and fall short of 300.

One of our clubs greats have gone now...

Its going to be very hard to cope without him....

He will get to 300 and be the first Swan ever to achieve it. Well played Micky O, premiership player and Swan's games record holder.

Really sad news although i was expecting it. To read it as fact really hits hard. Has been there since i first became a dedicated fan (1995).

I thought farewelling Kells was heart wrenching, this may be worse for me.

What a champ!

Sorry to invade your board, just wanted to say that it'd be a shame if Micky O didn't get to 300 games

Must admit I looked at his stats for the match against the Pies and wondered whether he would go around again

Would also be nice if Damian Barrett of the Herald Sun actually got it right, and mentioned the 96 GF, rather than the 95 GF. But that's the Herald for you

I just wanted to say I have been a big fan of Michael O'Loughlin and he has been a great player for the Swans. Even though I support West Coast, I am a Swans member and go to all the home games and whether he retires today, this weekend or makes it through to 300 games, I have enjoyed watching him play footy.

Legend. Started watching in 1995, so I have seen his whole career and he is a true club champion. A champion of the game as well. You have to be a very good player to kick 500+ goals and play 300+ games. Doesn't seem the coaching type, but he might want to take up some mentoring/assistant role.

Don't know why he'd mention the '95 GF between Carlton and Geelong when talking about Michael O'Loughlin.....

Edit: Oops, sorry. Just read the article. I misread what you were saying. Yeah, quality journalism!

really sad to hear though we were all expecting it coming of course. as soon as i started following the Swans when i was 8 in '98 he instantly became my one of my favourite players, was able to do anything on the ground. one of the only players who has been at the club ever since i started following the club and has been one of my favourites for the last 10 or so years.

if we don't make the finals, the round 22 clash vs Lions will be an emotional farewell, one which there is no option but winning for the Swans' favourite son.

Thats one of my favourite photos dani - love it to bits. Shows the passion of mickeyO.

Legend of our game, and is the heart and soul of the club.

I dont know why he would make an announcement now about this being his last year though? Why wait now? Why not do it in round 21? Or before his 300th? Makes me wonder if hes going to retire immediately...

oh man that is a great photo, love the passion of Mick and the hilarious faces on the WCE fans.

how long would it take for Mick to make it in the Swans hall of fame? is there an amount of time you have to wait after you retire to be considered like the AFl one?

not sure, given the swans hall of fame is brand new

but it'll be some time till he gets in any way, as there are 90 names shortlisted already to be the innaugural hall of famers

he'll have to wait behind the 3 afl legends, and dozen or so brownlow medallists

so don't hold your breath just yet

i guess, but surely he'd be shortlisted as soon as he becomes elligible, 300 + games (touch wood) and 500 + goals doesnt come around very often and games record holder as well.

How many are getting selected for the Hall of Fame?
no one apart from the selectors would probably know, nothing has been revealed

but journalistic prediction below

The Hall of Fame will be different to the Team of the Century, in that it will recognise players not only for their playing ability but also their status and legacy, the people who made a mark on the club. It is expected about 20 players will be inducted, dropping to three or four each subsequent year.

20 is about right. Not sure we need up to 4 each year. 2 or 3 per years would be enough. Interesting some will be inducted for the mark they left on the club as opposed to playing ability. That In the Blood book looks a worthy purchase.

seems like a wierd time to announce it if he is going to see out the year. If he pulls the pin now he should get a farewell game at home against Norf in rnd 14.
absolute champion of this club sad to see him go.
