I'd say we are already at 10 if everyone with a spot or a player missing the whole season takes a selection.

Not every club with a spare list spot will take a player, as we saw a few years ago.


It's not exactly a free hit, the players still have to fit in the clubs TPP and they aren't cheap for what are in the end initial 11 game contracts. Especially if you are taking a few of them.

Another 8 weeks and it is likely there will be 14 or 15 teams that could take a pick.

Seven clubs – Collingwood and Melbourne (two each), Essendon, North Melbourne, Port Adelaide, St Kilda and Sydney – have list spots available for the mid-season draft while other clubs will be able to send players with long-term injuries to the inactive list to open up further spots for the rookie selection meeting, which is scheduled for June 2.


Like the NAB AFL Draft, the mid-season rookie draft selections are in reverse ladder order.

Given that some AFL listed players are playing in the NAB League, I wonder if there could be a provision of drafting him, but he was still able to play for the Dragons as apposed to the VFL for the remainder of the season?

It makes sense for these young talls.

He's obviously developing at a rapid rate in that side and competition, also strengthens the league in general to keep the talent in it, if possible.

But again I counsel caution - the fact that we have the spots doesn't mean we fill them; budget in a tough year will come into it
