28th May.

187cm running defender Tom McCarthy, 25, has emerged as an early contender to be among the top picks in next month's Mid-Season AFL Rookie Draft. McCarthy has progressed rapidly since arriving at the Tigers VFL and has caught the attention of recruiters with his running power and ball-winning abilities.

Tom Evans has been mentioned a bit around here.

Watching the video posted today. Decent kick, not fast but not slow either. Played a loose role across half back so found it with ease.

He showed flashes for me, a few decent kicks opening the game up and linked up well but is he a bonafide AFL level prospect? I'm not sure. Doesn't seem to have any outstanding traits but did everything OK. Reminds me of Serong a bit (who i was wrong on in his draft year, didn't rate him at the time).

At 19 time is on his side also.

Not in bad shape, but not in the shape I was expecting for a 19 year old Talent League player hitting those numbers, and the disposal is very inconsistent (perhaps due to that).

Footage also doesn't show much of his defensive effort, but his overall work rate is clearly excellent. Not a pick that would improve us this year, but perhaps midfield or wing potential at the next level?

I understand why no one picked him up in the off-season, that's for sure.

With Kemp going down I am even more annoyed we pick Evans over McMahon in the psd.

I know the club have much more info and insight than any of us would ever have but what were they thinking????

Durdin, Motlop, Williams, Fantasia, Fogarty, Cottrell, E Hollands and now White (after Frank I know) but seriously??

With Charlie underdone, Mackay absent and now Kemp gone we desperately need cover and whilst Young and TdK can play up front and we could move Gov and/or SoS it just is too much sense to grab a young yet fairly experienced tall forward.

If the bummers steal him away from us before our picks it would just add some serious salt to the wound.

Make it make sense!!!!!!!

Still very slight as a Feb born over ager, not a big kid in general. Work rate is absolutely top shelf, just seems to pop up all over the place when watching the game live.

Defensively I didn't notice him a heap last match but in round 1 and 2 I felt like he was very strong at stopping entries through intercept work along with his partner in crime Connor Evans. They really seemed to hold the backline together for the whole match. In round 1 his groundball work really stuck out in a fairly scrappy affair compared to the rest of the boys, just never seemed to fumble a ball.

That said, the weekends game clipped up by Noober was to put it simple, a seagull masterclass. Oddly enough though, I actually believe we lack that on the list quite a bit looking to the future. Since Docherty came through we really haven't had any player down back capable of getting 30-40 touches through hard running and link up play down back. Newman is/was an intercept specialist and played the outlet role perfectly for us but has never really been the type to get involved in multi-possession chains to work it out of the backline and generate our drive. With Doch and Newy nearing the end we're left with

Saad - 20-25 touch type who's slowing down with age.
Carroll - For most of his juniors a fairly low level accumulator but a very strong kick
Cowan - Seems relegated to lockdown duties at AFL level, imo more of a Newman type if all goes well. Kicking is too inconsistent for that role imo.
Cincotta - Plays a bit of everything but isn't a primary distributor type. More lockdown than anything when down back.
Boyd - Very low accumulation, elite kicking talent... Wish we got it in his hands more.
Wilson - None of us really know what's going on with him atm being reinvented as a mid (which I'd rather he stay at HBF)
Ollie - Elite runner and elite work rate but doesn't seem like a natural back and a very inconsistent kick. Would prefer he stays on a wing.

With those players there we've really got a wide open hole for a running distributor. My first choice would be a Josh Lindsay type in the draft (if we managed to get a top 5-10 pick in the end of year draft) who is a genuinely elite kicking talent but also racks up the ball fairly well. But if we don't see that as an option getting an Evans type in to put some size on his frame and tidy up his disposal in congestion would be a tick for me looking to the future.

He isn't an Amon/Zorko type kicking talent but he's an above average user and can get his hands on the ball with the work rate to make it at the level. He also just seems like a very natural footballer from what I've watched and apparently played a fair bit of forward and on ball last year so would appear to have flexibility in where he can paly. Very keen to see him at VFL level if he plays there this year to see how he goes against the bigger bodies and increased pressure.

The flipside to this is Billy Wilson could return to half back, fixes whatever he's done to his body to lose all his pace and agility and start showing some signs that he's ready for the next level. But that's anyone's guess as to whether that occurs or not at this stage. Hopefully just 2nd year Blues.

I'm not too mad about skipping over McMahon who I don't really rate that highly (compared to others at least), but the Evans selection was just dumbfounding. Can't understand how anyone in our list team could have thought he was a good selection for the now or for the future.

Just another indication that our list team haven't a clue what they're doing when it comes to finding quality small forwards.

Need to take the two local boys;

Gabriel Stumpf will become our Noah Balta (ironically he also has matured off field). Incredible athlete at 1.97m.

And just throwing this one out there …may need to consider getting ahead of the November queue for Flynn Riley if we anticipate TDK is gone.

Wasn't Flynn playing for us earlier in the year in the VFL? He looked like a beast in the bit I saw, not sure what happened to him

Liked the look of Stumpf last year, had him on a list of talls worth considering, thought he may have been a later draft or rookie pick…
Certainly has some nice traits…

I honestly think he was overlooked because recruiters didn’t know how to pronounce his name

… and therefore they didn’t want to look foolish if they called it out incorrectly on draft night.

It would be hard to give HOK development ruck time and now also Pitto with Flynn in the team.

Dillon : And with pick 68 Carlton pick Grabriel Stump 🪵 from the Northern Knights football club…
