List Mgmt. Mid-season draft 2025

Mid-season draft is 2 weeks away - will be held on 28 May.

At the moment we don't have a list spot open, but there is an option to move a player onto the LTI.

So which players would you look closely at, if we do dive in?

Todd Marshall seems to be the best option for opening up a spot. By the time he is fit enough to play again the season will likely be lost already.

Tommy Cochrane has history with his stress fracture so we could also possibly take extra caution with his recovery.

I don't think the Jacob Moss injury will open any list spots because he is Cat B

In terms of who we get, there are 2 main paths to go down.

Our midfield has gone to absolute water when Butters isn't carrying the whole thing, and with Rozee going to HBF we are in need of some better inside and outside mid options. Jack Watkins is the saftest option from right under our nose.

The other option is for a KPD. With BZT coming off a delayed start to the season and looking slow even at SANFL level, we will need to start asking the question as to whether or not playing a 3rd tall is better to free up Bergman and Jones. Not sure who best fits this category.

if we do get 2 picks in the mid-season draft then besides Watkins, I would look at these players

KPD / KPF
Caleb Lewis,
who kicked five goals across the two Young Guns games. he was classed as a key defender, renowned for intercept marking and pinpoint ball use from half-back. But Lewis, 21, has become an exciting 198cm forward with his high-flying ability and goal nous. (on the radar of the Suns)

Mid
Cooper Herbert
(191cm) Powerful Cannons player also starred against Vic Country, booting 3.1 from 15 disposals and six marks.
Sam Toner – a dangerous 184cm natural goalkicker with lots of tricks. averaging 12.3 disposals from three games of the wing

Ruck - (to replace Soldo)
Ayden McCarroll 209cm Western Jets ruck who’s consistently hit the scoreboard in recent months.
Ajang Kuol mun 202cm ruck. renowned for his natural leap and mobility, in his best VFL game - booting 2.1 from 20 disposals, 17 contested possessions, nine clearances, nine score involvements, three contested marks and 39 hit-outs.
Zac Harding considered one of the top 19-year-olds in the mid-season pool, with recruiters liking his kicking skills, as well as his mobility and competitiveness.

HFF
Ewan Mackinley
has kicked 4.5 and averaged 16.0 disposals and 3.8 inside 50s in the SANFL this season. Clubs love Mackinley’s speed and power, as well as his kicking skills in the front half.

if we do have 2 picks in the mid-season draft then definitely pick up Watkins but I am not sure about McLennan ... I would rather see if we could add to our KPD stocks first
I dont think there's much KPD stocks there tbh

Plus I would rather McLennan over Watkins as it stands, especially with Bergman moving into the middle. McLennan is defensively accountable and can intercept plays well. Already having been on an AFL list helps too. I'd take Watkins if Butters signs the day after though haha

If Caleb Lewis is available at our pick I'd take him, even ahead of Watkins if all we have is only 1 pick. With Bergman moving into midfield that position now is more important. I doubt he gets through and even if he does, I don't think we'd even be considering him. Our list management has a knack of drafting based on potential rather than needs which this time, I find really annoying

McCarroll is the other one I really like, I think he could be a forward with part-time ruck.

Tommy should be moved on to the long term list. Simply no piont in risking that injury without an extended rehabilitation period.

Rhett Montgomerie

Jack Watkins

Probably Jack gets a game with Port now.

Nobody screams pick me though.

Unless you’re Essendon and two ruckman down, I think the only path is to pick the player most likely to make it. Whoever that is.

Watkins would be unlucky to miss out given his SANFL form.

Any chance Ports puts a line through Moss/or Marshall for the mid-season draft? Kinda thin in the tall defensive stocks department at the moment.
I have seen this posted a lot recently. We absolutely cannot put Moss on the LTI to recruit in the mid-season draft. He is a Cat B rookie. It doesn't work like that.

Think we will open up 2 spots for the mid season draft. Marshal and Cochrane put on the LTI list.
This is Cochrane's second navicular stress fracture and currently 7-11 weeks away.
Unlikely to play at the end of this season with match fitness being an issue.

Should look to take Watkins and a KPD such as:
Harrison Ramm 201cm (18yrs) KPD/RUCK playing SANFL League
Tom Bell 197cm (19yrs) KPD WAFL Reserves
Gus Papal 193cm (19yrs) KPD Calder Cannons

MID/Forward option:
Cooper Herbert 191cm (19 yrs)

Watkins or Mead.... that's the question. Who is better served playing that last mid role, where is the most obvious best 22 improvement, its the last spots in there. Id love to give Watkins a.shot and drop Mead.

I'm more sold on McLennan than Watkins. I prefer him over Burton as well.

It feels like most of the time these threads talk about a bunch of interesting players from around the country but we usually just elevate a Magpie, no?

Actually no. We've done that twice both with players we brought to Port that year (Sutcliffe and Evans). But McEntee, Narkle and Teakle came from other clubs, two of those from interstate.

What actually happens if we put someone on the LTI expecting they won't play this year, but they recover quicker than expected and can play the last few games? Are they forbidden to come back into the team because we replaced their position? For example, we put Tommy Cochrane on the LTI, however he is fit for the last few rounds, can he play Magpies at least?

The chance to stuff Glenelg around makes Ramm(stein) very appealing. Also mobile 201cm ruckman, handy.

If we put him on long term injury list obviously can't play AFL... But would a run in the snafl be allowed?

That’s a tricky one and doesn’t seem clear, as they’ve changed the rules around rookie promotion.

Everywhere it suggests you can’t play for 6 weeks minimum, AFL or SANFL, but that’s under the old system of promoting a rookie to replace a senior listed player.

I would imagine it’s can’t play but perhaps there is exemption for state league footy? Ie couldn’t play AFL but could play SANFL or amateurs or something.

I don't know the specifics of the mechanism but there's a way to bring someone off LTI if they do recover IF you have someone else to go on the LTI at the time. But at all times there needs to be the same number of people of LTI
