News Mid-Season Draft

Tomlinson is the reason the mid-season draft was introduced. For teams to fill injury holes that may destroy their ability to contend. It’s just clubs have been using it to try to pick ‘Smokey’ talent with limited success.

If Moore goes down our season is screwed and we desperately need an insurance policy.

Not a developable ‘prospect’ that will take time to get their fitness up and learn the ropes before they may or may not become AFL relevant.

We need someone with multiple AFL preseasons under their belt, AFL game understanding, ready to plug and play in an emergency, listed for 6-months then discarded after we win the flag.

That player is Adam Tomlinson.

Good Chance we have 2-3 MSD Pick so we could take Both Tomlinson and McCartin IF both Avaliable

Why? A couple of good ones have gone early, but it tends to be a list clogger draft after that.
It’s getting options on the list.
We don’t need to keep handing out 18 month contracts. But to get the best list, we should use every avenue to improve our squad

We should look at every avenue, but only pull the trigger when it's beneficial - in the MSD, beneficial is players actually likely to play in the second half of the year, or players we rate higher than those likely to be available late in the National Draft or those we can have a look at in SSP period to better evaluate.

Its the players that nominate the contracts not the clubs, said club would know of the terms when selecting the player. Generally the older the player, they tend to go for short term, but those younger who think they have a chance, generally go with the 18 month.

My observations on the MSD are as follows
1. Owies left Carlton and they're now in a mess.
2. We overlooked tomlinson and now our defence needs him.
3. Cumberland left Richmond and they're now the worst side in the comp.
4. We should have listened to manic. It's pretty obvious Cumberland is the missing link

I think if we have two picks, the first one may be best available, and then go for needs with the 2nd if the players on your list are available.

Even last year when we had no rucks, we went with a youngster in Smit over experienced in Teakle. We have yet to go straight to immediate depth, so it'll be interesting how we go about it this year.
2021-2022 we went with best available (ash, carmichael who were highly rated)

Last year we still had Hine though.

We’ve got new recruitment staff now.

I don’t understand the obsession with the MSD. It’s not proven to be a successful hunting ground. Especially KPP. Couple of flankers have obviously been found. Finding 3? No chance. We might even only take 1
Every time we have a mid-season draft coming up it's the same on here - there's just a handful of people talking sense, then there's the (much larger) "but it's a free hit" crowd!! I think it's absolutely fanciful to think we might take as many as three players (even if we somehow ended up with that many picks available), and that picking one may be closer to the mark. I also think it very unlikely we'd put someone on our list that we were expecting to delist at the end of the year. It might happen this time around, we do have new people making these decisions now, but I just don't expect it will.

If Adam Tomlinson is seen as being good enough to play for us (and then to be kept on for another year), so be it. I think we'd be looking elsewhere, or at least hope we are. Eighteen clubs didn't want him on their list this year, yet now we simply must have him! Chances are the same people were saying 12 months ago that we just had to get Teakle. We ignored Teakle, and I don't think he's done anything since to make us regret not taking him!

I know that.
As would most regulars here.
And have no problem with it.
I’d also like to think we wouldn’t take a player for 18 months unnecessarily. For arguments sake, Tomlinson if we thought he was just an immediate season patch up.

Thanks sr36
I think that’s the point I’m trying to make.
