Eastern Ranges bolter Rod Ali is another prospect to watch, after impressing in the early rounds of his first season in football’s talent pathways.
A junior footballer at Mitcham, the 19-year-old had focused on his basketball until this year but possesses a huge natural leap and great speed.

Ali, who measures 186cm, logged 11 disposals, seven marks (five intercept marks) and eight spoils in defence during a round 3 win over the Western Jets in the Coates Talent League.

He also collected 15 disposals and four rebound-50s in a recent trial match for Vic Metro.

Ballarat boy Floyd Burmeister – a 199cm forward-ruckman – is also on the radar of scouts after recording 17 disposals, 13 score involvements and kicking 3.3 in a round 2 win for the Greater Western Victoria Rebels earlier this month.

Considered unlucky not to be drafted last November, the incredibly athletic big man finished third in the standing vertical jump and sixth in the running vertical jump at last year’s national draft combine.

Another 2024 national draft combine attendee, Adrian Cole, has made a solid start to the season as a 19-year-old for the Dandenong Stingrays while also being listed with North Melbourne’s VFL side.

The defender was eligible to join St Kilda via Next Generation Academy rules last year but was overlooked.

I vaguely remember talk about Burmeister during draft season. Think some were high on him, but cannot remember.

17 disposals and 3.3 is a decent outing

Media may have linked us to him as a late selection, but he went undrafted. I feel like I read he had a really good combine score in something.

But looks like he has come back better.

The fact they are now playing Smit as a key defender (with stints in the ruck) makes me wonder if they would look for another ruck/forward, or if its more that they know Mccarthy is coming (but he would be a more key forward at the next level)
Does Smit look comfortable in the backline or do you think it's just out of necessity, due to our lack of KPD players at the moment.

Too early to tell.
It could be because of our lack of key defenders. Its only been going on the last week or so

What about the speech impediment guy that was all the rage - Stumpf - is he playing well anywhere.

Northern Knights according to this as an overager. But didnt get an invite to this game

Only kicked 1 goal, so not sure if he is playing forward. Ruck? Back?

I have no idea about how he's doing now, but he did well at the combine and has a slightly goofy head. Worth picking on potential cult status

Cant forget this

Wonder if he's had a haircut since.

Keep an eye on Floyd Burmeister, the GWV Rebels high-flyer who has caught the eye of club scouts already this year.

Burmeister was unlucky not to make it onto an AFL list last year but has shone in the early parts of 2025 in the Coates Talent League.

He booted three goals for Vic Country in a trial game on the weekend and has generated ten scoring shots in two games for the Rebels. A tall forward who is athletic around the ground and loves to clunk a mark, Burmeister is exactly the type of player that clubs have pounced on mid-season in recent years.

“He’s still very raw, he hasn’t played a huge amount of footy, but I’d love him in my side,” Vic Country coach Nick Cox told foxfooty.com.au.

“His ability to launch and jump at the footy is unbelievable… he just gets involved in games and can fly and compete in the air where a lot of people just give up.”

Tomlinson still on the radar?

Experienced tall defensive depth is surely our greatest need in a year we're all in for the flag.
Hopefully we get lots of serious injuries and can draft every hack tall in Australia.

Hacks don't play 185 AFL games.

It's only a question of whether he's cooked or has something left in the tank.
I don't mind Tomlinson. That comment was more about people wanting us to put AJ and Finn on the LTI and have heaps of picks in this draft

Let's be brutally honest.

Macrae is gone at years end, as is Johnson IMO.

If it suited our list management potentially couldn't it also be financially beneficial to them this season if one agreed to go on the LTI?

I don't know how your standard AFL contract works but didn't we get in some salary cap strife a number of years back due to a high number of injuries in season which presumably lead to players being entitled to a certain amount of match payments we hadn't expected to pay?
