That's fine

When Ralph seems to confirm Essendon never spoke to the kid, I take that as them not having had any real interest in him.

Maybe that's an assumption I shouldn't be making? Roan had a medical, we spoke to May and told him we'd take him if he's available.

That says to me that "Collingwood has interest in player (x)"

But we’ll never know how our interest in May compared to our interest in Howes, who we’d have taken if they’d both been available. Even if we’d have still taken Steele at 8 even if May was available.

I doubt we would have. A choice between 2 very speculative KPFs, both of whom we’d been linked to, is hardly worth the cost to available picks in the ND given we likely need every available point to secure all the NGA and FS picks we’re linked to.
Joke of an idea.
Can you imagine in Europe, the January transfer window (EPL) affecting the summer transfer window?

Roane has been on our radar for a while. He had a medical at the club last month. Just because Ralphy and BF embraced we were into May and clickbait took off doesn’t mean that was necessarily the case. For all we know we got who we wanted. Roane wasn’t a backup plan.

FWIW I am happy we got Howes as that big bodied forward that other teams always seem to have.

I'm obviously basing my post on reporting that's out there

What was reported publicly was that we gave Roan a medical and that we'd promised May we'd take him if he was available

I interpret that as "these are two players we have great interest in". So when I hear Essendon hadn't spoken to him prior to picking him (taking Ralph's reporting as accurate, of course another assumption), then that tells me they didn't have any real interest in him prior to hearing we did.

Again, if that's a wrong assumption I'm making here, then that's my bad?

Or we may have gone for May first and then Roan if he was still available.
We'll never know.

Listening to Derm talk about Archie May sounds like we missed out on a good one, **** you Essendon. Imagine ruining a young kids life by drafting him to your club it’s nearly as bad as being drafted by the saints. Derm said we spoke to May twice and were definitely drafting him.

I doubt we’d promise any player we’d take them. Express our interest definitely which we may also have equally expressed to Howes. It’s all smoke and mirrors.

I think we need to be happy with what we have, it’s a bit of a lucky dip the MSD, they are not the best of the best they are the best of the rest, it’s about list need and individual upside. I like the two guys coming in, both have traits that could help them contribute at AFL level. i didn’t give Ned Long or JFN much chance but both are killing it, can anyone remember who was drafted before them, apart from the Hawthorn guy.

Allegedly Dermot spoke on SEN and said we'd spoken to Archie twice and that we were taking him

So....yeah. It seems we did?

Isn't May his step-son? Of course he's going to talk him up as much as he can.

Agree that the poor kid's September aspirations are already slammed shut though.

It's unbelievable how many people on here are upset that Essendon took May considering none of us had heard of him until two days ago.

So much to unpack here

a) I'm pretty sure not everyone here is a talent scout. Just to throw it out there
b) I'm also pretty sure, many football supporters (let alone Collingwood supporters) still believe in and enjoy the "romanticism" of football. It's essentially the entire reason the Father Son rule exists no?
c) References are a thing
d) Bitter rivalries exist in most sports

When you take A through D into consideration, is it really that unbelievable?

A 20 year old kid who is a fanatical Collingwood supporter and a key position forward (something we've avoided recruiting for the better part of a decade and desperately need) is reportedly on our radar, menotred by an all time great centre half forward who is his step dad (and former Collingwood player/supporter to boot) and has repotedly only met with us and been promised he'd be taken should he be available

No one is saying he's the next Wayne Carey or Dermot Brereton (outside the obvious joke posts), but is it reeeeeally that unbelievable many are disappointed one of our oldest rivals took him seemingly (allegedly) out of nowhere right before our pick?

Come on mate

I was always confident on noble given he played right away once he was picked up and probably played 95% of the games he was available for

As for who was taken before them.
Noble the only one left from 2019. Pickett retired. Snelling delisted? Oh and Gardner is still on the dogs list? I forgot about him

Ned's draft -- When we selected him
Georgie Payne, Jacob Blight, Hutchinson,Max Hall, Cooper Lord, Logan Evans, Saad from essendon all taken before we took Ned.

It's just not a big deal. We drafted a KPF anyway. Who knows who will be better or if either will make it? MSD players, especially talls, are very speculative.

In terms of tall forwards we're fine now in terms of numbers, especially if you also consider McCarthy being on the way. Quality might be a question.

We also took Roo Smit before Ned, still have hope but Ned clearly ahead and taken later.

Ned had no interest I guess we knew he would be available later.
And took a promising kid with our first.

As far as I’m concerned, Essendon picked him to spite us or “Wait, if Collingwood wants him he must be good. Let’s just take him”

This is the biggest win Essendon have had since the 2004 Elimination Final.

I don't care what anybody says, it would be right up Brad Snott's alley to take a player just to spite the opposition, particularly the Pies. He's never going to win anything as a coach. He's always going to be the second best twin and he's always going to be a (unsayable here).

Second best and worst twin are the same thing.
FFS, he doesn’t even have facial hair.
