This MSD just didn't have any decent key defenders. Probably better off looking at the draft
I think we might have been interested in Ramm, but he was gone by our first pick.
So was Adams, the player Essendon passed on to pick May instead.

Which makes the draft interesting as you’d think we’re likely to take McCarthy and we’re going to take McGuane. The choice then between a KPD and Saxena as an example becomes intriguing.

The national championships are going to tell us more

Exactly. People seem to have underrated Dean's season, but he's been very good in the VFL season to date. Was there anyone performing substantially better that was worth taking a shot at, or should we just have faith in what we have?

Maybe Essendon are just trying to corner the Archie market, because they already have Roberts and Day-Wicks.
Now they just need one more and they can redo Sugar, Sugar.
Done - Perkins

I get that but we’ve had two opportunities with Moore out injured to expose Dean to AFL and we’ve decided against it.

If we were thrilled with how he was going why would we not give him that opportunity?

He knows the system, which immediately makes him a better option than a MSD bloke. People are dreaming to think the state leagues have KPDs (the most significant system and structure piece) who could be just dropped into a squad and immediately be able to play to a decent standard in a foreign game plan and system - experienced AFL guns with a preseason behind them often look a bit out of sorts and take a fair while to settle when dropped into a new team.

would be performance based - meet some KPIs and we'll be aiming to take you up in the offseason - SSPs?
No, there's no chance of them making a conditional promise to them, KPI-based or otherwise.

It's just not how the industry works. All the power lies with the clubs and there's no reason to give any over to the players.

No professional sports club would risk locking themselves into having to take players they otherwise didn't want because they happened to technically meet the criteria.

You're asking the question, and the answer is "no - that's not a possibility".

I agree here, Dean was one of the better VFL defenders when we listed him, he hasn’t set the world on fire but he is OK depth that we haven’t required as yet. Frampton is stepping up and has been solid and we have genuine A graders around him. We also use DC really well supporting (system and structure) the back half, the system holds up and we have guys that can play medium and can also play on some of the talls. Last time I looked our defence was not an issue.

happy to retain them for our VFL side and happy if we can make something happen in the off season intead! Perhaps they know they have some sort of promise of that
I like the idea of using the VFL as a development pathway, the issue is would we take one of our guys if they were not best available at our pick or would we get upset if another Club ahead of us took them. If we made the sort of promise it couldn’t be reciprocated by the player if another Club came knocking.

I think the best is having guys trained in our system that are ready to go, the rest is up to them to force their way onto the list.

Is May any good? Never heard of him before this week.
Listening to Dermie yesterday, seems like a good kid, but Dermie seemed to be at pains to say he has alot of hard work in front of him.

Also emphasised he is a big bull, but maybe didn't get noticed because he played with Calsher Dear and his agility saw him taking constantly taking marks over May. Personally, I think agility in big men is where the game is at.

Hopefully the kid makes it, but some of the reactions from this and Essendon's board seem over the top for someone who, statistically, wont.

One thing Dermie did say was that the Pies put alot of work into him, not just interviews, but also speaking to the 'right' people, and seems to have been happening for a number of weeks. The Bombers spoke to him once, which may have been this week. So, good to know how professional the club is in putting the work into recruitment.

Agree with Dean knowing the system and that all makes sense but when the opportunity came with Moore out we didn’t elevate him. We preferred to train up Reef over a preseason and trial him in front of Charlie.

I’d have liked to see him play and see if that VFL form translates. Part of me wonders with all I have said above does he survive the cut at the end of the year. Despite our defense looking great so far there’s no denying there’s not much tall depth.

He'll be lucky to survive the end of year cull as list spots are going to be tight. But that doesn't mean there was a MSD option more likely to contribute as depth this year.
