I'm bouncing around a few mid-season ideas that have been raised in the past and I am keen to hear coaches thoughts. There is no guarantee any of the following is going to happen.

In short, the idea is to run a mid-season trade and mid-season draft period during the bye weeks (AFL Rounds 12,13,14).

I'm not exactly sure how it would run but it would look something like this:
  • Each club is allocated a draft pick based on reverse ladder order at conclusion of round 11.
  • The draft pick will be used to select any currently un-drafted player on a free deal for the remainder of the season.
  • First two bye weeks is a mid-season trade period.
  • Trades can be conducted between any club but must be a 1 for 1, 2 for 2 etc. type trade.
  • Rookie and veteran listed players can not be traded.
  • A draft pick can also be traded in these deals in lieu of a player.
  • Teams must remain under the salary cap at all times (this will make trades difficult and may mean multiple trades need to be lined up at once.)
  • Players' salaries and years remain the same in trades.
  • At the conclusion of the trade period the mid-season draft commences where each team takes their selections as per the new draft order.
The idea will be to keep the competition active during this lull but also give clubs the opportunity to trade in key position players that they may be lacking (or any other players youmay be interested in. After the trade period is over hardship exceptions may be much harder to come by (e.g. Nankervis who has been selected as a KPF for most of the year despite few injuries on list may not qualify as hardship exception).

The negative of this idea is it takes us away from what the game was intended to originally be; a close as possible simulation of AFL Team management as there is no mid-season draft or trade period in the AFL.

Again not committing to anything at this stage but keen to hear any thoughts. May be something brought in future seasons if not this year.

Have also posted a poll to gauge interest.

Also happy to hear any other mid-season idea you may have.

It's an interesting idea I guess. It does make it more interesting, especially considering there's a full 12 months between each list management period, and although that's a short period of time for football clubs, it's very long for us. But I do like the realism of the current set-up, despite being a new player.

I'm torn.

This reply probably didn't help at all.

Sorry just to add - I'm against a mid-season trade period, only a draft/delisting period.

I’m not against trading mid season but I think that’s part of the pre season planning. We have a pretty lengthy trade period etc.

Teams get unlucky but that happens in any sport.

I don't disagree with that at all. But I think the hardship rule kind of negates that. Are we being too flexible so peole no longer have to make any effort to fill those spots legitimately?

Thanks for the feedback everyone, it's much appreciated. I'm going to shelve the idea for this season but will open it up for discussion again in the off-season. I don't really want to rush in a rule change mid-year.
