Mid Year Draft , fair or not ?

Pickett was Pick 13 in the mid-season draft who only the week before had suffered a broken finger.

To be eligible to be in the mid-season draft a player had to be nominated for an AFL National Draft previously; so every club has previously had the opportunity to recruit Pickett. It's not like he was a spud for 8 years in the WAFL and became a star in May--- it's just that Richmond was prepared to take a risk on him despite his history & injuries.

Clubs had their eyes on and interviewed Pickett before the last few national drafts and still overlooked him.

Can’t really say Richmond have abused any systems by finally giving an injured 27 year old a lifeline after being overlooked so many times.

What do we think ? Some teams didn't get a selection because they kept their list healthy but others like Richmond thru a retirement ( forced ? ) get to eye pick a player to improve their list in Picket. I don't know what's the opinion
Lmao. So many clubs had an opportunity to select Pickett and didn’t. Used it to select youngsters which wasn’t its intended purpose.

We had a mid-year retirement due to injury as Grigg couldn’t get over his hip issues.

We selected a mature age player who plays a position we don’t have a great deal of depth in (midfield/inside midfield).

That depth was tested when Graham dislocated his shoulder in the PF, as it was either going to be a mature-age body, or an 18 year old draftee (Jack Ross) being thrown into the heat of a grand final.

I’d say we used the mid-season draft exactly as it was intended.

This. Richmond used the mid-season draft for the purpose it was brought in

Think South Freo, got to the GF, Pickett unavailable ... got a bath.

Only an issue because it actually worked as intended and Richmond benefited from it huh?

Where was this thread the day of the draft? It's either an issue as a concept or it isn't, you can't just suddenly have an issue with it because it fulfilled it's purpose, having a ready made player come in and perform a role is exactly what it was intended for.

Nothing wrong with it mate. We had like Pick 13 in it, 12 clubs overlooked Pickett, and most of them decided to draft kids from what I can remember.

We really need to look at some of the sides that selected 18/19 year old kids to warehouse them before this years draft.

Not in the spirit of the rule IMO.

These clubs arent going to get a flag when the kid debuts. Should be age limited to 21+ IMHO.

I don’t know how many years or decades it’s going to take for these idiot recruiters to get the message, pick ready to go footballers and stop picking 17 year old lottery picks who have done nothing, not proved themselves and certainly not performed against men.
Subiaco alone has 6-10 ready to go players who could fill a role in any AFL club, they are ignored because they are mid 20’s and instead lose their rightful positions to kids who are not good enough and have not earned the right to be on an AFL list.
Pickett performance was no surprise at all, seasoned footballer just going about his business.

Not intending to have a shot at the tigers , they were just an example. My point is some clubs got a chance to improve their lists and others didn't ,must a discussion piece boys

If Brisbane played at the Gabba for ten weeks in a row, or sixteen times in a season there would be comments about it.

If it was just an example— why wasn’t this thread made the day of the mid season draft instead of the day after the Tiges win the Grand Final?

I detest mid-season list changes of any sort. But the rules are the same for everyone, so its not unfair to AFL clubs.
To state league clubes who might lose a premiership because a player or two they were relying on got poached mid-year, it is blatantly unfair. They end up paying the price for another team's bad luck or poor choices.

Its fair in the sense that every club had access to it and knew about it in advance. So if you choose not to prepare for it then too bad really.

I thought Snelling went pretty well in his appearances for us this year. Was hoping for a ruck though.

Improve their list? They lost a 2 time B+F 200 game player for a got overlooked in 3 drafts.
