I think he can play. He did a couple of nice things playing for our NEAFL last year. He probably isn't as strong as his brother was but Josh played senior footy with Sale whilst Kyle played schoolboys with Melbourne Grammar. I reckon he's worth a look. That said, we didn't rookie him.
We didn’t rookie him because he’d ‘plateaued’ last year. The club suggested that he play as a top age player in TAC or whatever it’s called now to see if he’d improve and that’s apparently what’s happened. Apparently he dominated some special game last Sunday and the scouts from several clubs (inc us) were there to see. There are a few articles if you google.

There is no dislike from the kids (both did after all nominate us to pick up under the father son rule), just a strong family desire to stay in Victoria. Andrew didn't like the fact he was retired by the club in 2002, but he never stopped the boys from supporting the club, being involved in the rooms after matches or even from training with the club as juniors once they moved back to Yarram.

The club and the family came to an understanding that if a club from outside Victoria or NSW bid on Josh we would match it and Josh would play for us, if not we would let him stay in Victoria. Now that Kyle has been overlooked in one draft he would be more than happy to move to Sydney to play.
Close...it was only Josh that wanted to stay in Victoria. Kyle has stated he’d move anywhere (and he does love the Swans!).

Averaging 19 possessions as an overager in TAC, hardly setting the world on fire

I agree but the club sees it differently, they’re not looking at the numbers, they’re looking at the skills. As I stated, dominated a game last weekend with skill and funnily enough, disposals (27 or something). There is an article but I can’t find it at present.

Kyle Dunkley was a standout in the Young Guns match, racking up a game-high 27 disposals (12 contested), seven clearances, eight score involvements, four tackles and two goals.

That is a criticism of every player in the mid-season draft as they have all either been overlooked or delisted, sometimes quite a few times. In saying that though that is not always a bad thing because if the mid-season draft was around 2 years ago then Tim Kelly would have been a part of it, and if it was around a long time ago then Brett Kirk would have been too. Every mature ager recruited in the last few years would have been eligible for this draft.

and the 7 clearances bit is the bit we are really interested in. We need a player to come in and do some clearance work.

We have someone who was second in clearances of all draftees last year and he’s currently in the NEAFL. I hear Mills was handy in clearances as a junior, and he’s currently in the back pocket. There’s Hewett, who was a clearance specialist in the reserves, and he’s currently a tagger. Also Dawson, who was also a specialist at clearances in the reserves, and he’s currently running at two centre bounce attendances for the whole season.

Don’t assume that just because we have the right player that they’ll be used the right way.

Will be interesting to see how he goes against tougher opposition, if he plays.

Definitely the best opportunity to see how ready he is for AFL level football. I think Carlton are far less likely to take him if he can't have immediate impact, whereas Sydney would be more likely to take the punt

But also don’t assume that where/how they play at junior level, or NEAFL level, is where/how they’ll be able to contribute at AFL level (see Ryan Clarke!).

Dawson’s kicking for instance he is better off on the outside for us rather than stuck in the middle of a stoppage.

Seem to remember people on here rated Kyle better than his brother a couple of years ago. What happened last year, injuries, poor form?

That's correct in that he was rated higher than Josh at a similar age by others in the know. Stagnated, played school footy in Melbourne and for some reason, it set him back a bit. Maybe it was the change in environment? Could've been the increased weight training?

Poor form pretty much. Just wasn't good enough to even be rookie drafted, but has worked incredibly hard to improve this year, and is suddenly looking like he'll be one of the first picked in the MSD

If Swans have pick 1 then Beatson would be crazy not to pick him since he is exactly what we need right now, so much so that even Longmire and Beatson must see it.

I think it's more likely than not that he ends up with you guys. I doubt you guys have Pick 1 since I think you'll finish above Carlton (Essendon H, North A, Collingwood H is an easier draw than Collingwood H, GWS A, Saints A) but feels like they are less likely to go for Dunkley since he's probably too similar to Cripps (with the same strengths and weaknesses)

And that’s fine. But I am referring explicitly to inside midfielders. We’ve been incredibly poor on the inside, we have four perfectly viable options to help out in that area, and only one of them (Hewett) has been used as such, and even he has only been deployed as an inside ball-winner on the few occasions he hasn’t been tagging.

I get that sometimes there just isn’t a role for a certain player. But when we have a very clear need for a certain type of player, and all four worthy candidates are off doing other roles with less effect, I find that incredibly moronic tbh.

I don't think we will beat Essendon or Collingwood. We might beat North but it is a 50/50 game at best. Could easily be 1-9 in the next few weeks.

Collingwood I doubt, but I think the Essendon and North games are both winnable. I highly doubt Carlton gets any wins in the next 3 weeks, so it comes down to who loses by less

I don’t think you really comprehend how bad we are.
Eh, I get you guys are pretty bad at the moment, but I also won't be surprised at all to see you suddenly switch on. I picked a drop this year to the 9-12 range, but not this far

That is where I had us.

After we recruited that ball-magnet Clarke and had a "new" recruit in Reid come into the side I thought that double-handedly they would arrest any slide and we would be better placed.

Alas, oft dreams are dashed on the boulders of reality.
