PMSL Since when did they read my facebook comments. Its a good thing not a bad thing, actually helps teams with injury tolls.Though I like a mid season draft better.

I prefer the midyear draft option Hawthorn floated a couple of years ago. Pick up a pinch hitter from the state leagues if all your rucks have gone down, etc. Lot less disruptive. Adding another trade period will result in another week where not much happens.

Trade period is not needed. What they should do is let clubs sign non AFL listed players to a weekly contract for the remainder of the year. So if you lose a ruckman in week 6, you can sign a ruckman from a state league and basically pay them match payments for games they play during the rest of the year.

i think it's a backward step, we may as well bring back saturday afternoon footy, 19th& 20th men. and fitzroy and south melbourne.

i bunch it in the same group, it's had it's day, i'm not sure how successful it was, but imo we've moved on, & so has the game.

Do the vagaries of the fixture complicate a mid-season draft though?

Scenario: The Bombers have a shocking first half of the system, coming up against 6 top 4 teams from last year and a further 4 games against up-and-comers this year. The second half of their season though is stacked with 8 games against easy-beats and they're expected to come home on a roll. At the mid-point of the season they're in 3rd last. Do they deserve the 3rd pick in the mid-year draft?

Going by ladder positions from the previous year can throw up issues as well. See West Coast's last two seasons.

Easy fix: Allow clubs to have a couple of extra rookies, then half way through the season make it so you can elevate rookies whenever you like.

Or at any point in the first half of the season you can add a player to your list but make it a bidding process. So it costs you a pick in the national draft at the end of the year. Say you want player A and you offer give up your 5th round pick in the draft and another club within say a one week period says they'll give up their 4th round pick then they get the player. Perhaps each club can enlist 2 players at any stage in the first half of the season.

Without a doubt they do. But I wouldn't imagine most teams would necessarily be involved. My guess would be rookie list, at most one pick, not taken from the normal set of rookies. What I envision would be a very limited first aid patch for a list, i.e. us bringing in someone for Merrett. Maybe tying it into free agency would be better, and just let teams sign state league players on to their rookie list after the halfway point of a season. The only dodgy thing about that is that they can be used to stockpile talent that may have otherwise gone in the draft, so obviously restrictions would be needed.

I don't mind the idea of a mid season draft type scenario. Needs to be thought through but the more opportunities we allow for competitive sides each week, as well as opportunities for those outside the system to come into the system, the better.

Not quite as comfortable with mid season trading between clubs. Having said that, in the NRL, where they are obviously a lot more accepting of player movement, it has become regular practice for a player lacking opportunities at one club to move mid-season to another club.

One scheme that may be worth considering is a loan system, similar to soccer. That can be mutually beneficial - the "lending" club gets gametime into a player, the "borrowing" club fills a need on their list, albeit temporarily. Again, needs more thought but I don't hate the idea.
