I agree with that - and whats really annoying is when Geelong get just absolutely ripped to pieces in the 1st qtr - like last week - and the Collingwood game - where it is 7 goals to nothing at qtr time - and Geelong look completely powerless to do anything - you add in the Fremantle final - 5g 7b to one solitary point -and the 2010 PF - its just happening too much in big games - its like the old horror days of the past - the fragile/suspect Cats

One thing i found interesting re the midfield in 2015 - was i heard Ross Lyon ( now you can bag him if you like - but hes a pretty astute coach ) on the radio and he said about Selwood - the 1st thing he said was Selwood is a champion - then he said - however Joel gives you a look - he definitely gives you a look . Id love to know what he meant bythat - he wasnt being a smart aarse- he was just factually pointing something out

Hopefully they do something with the midfield next year - because im getting sick of Geelong falling to bits again when the blowtorch is applied
Re: J. Selwood he gives you a look the other way; meaning he attacks and runs forward of the play at times in 50/50 stoppage situations and allows his opponent if astute enough to exploit this and hurt him the other way. In other words he aint great defensively at times, or for the layman he's a bit of a downhill skier.

Scooter needs a big pre season for mine, thought he was pretty ordinary this season to be honest.

Yep, the bloke who had the equal most tackles for the club for the year (with Blicavs) doesn't do enough defensively. Now I've heard everything.

We seriously need another 3-4 genuine good midfielders to add to our rotation.

Look at the Dogs for example, they have 10-12 midfielders they rotate through the middle every game. So at each centre bounce they are rested and can go at %100.

Spot On!!

Players like Lids, Wells, Hanley even Hartlett & Jong to a lesser extent. Make the next step in 2017 easier.
I know I know... people will say Lids is injury prone and old... Disagree with the 1st but at 29...
He has 2 good years left. PERFECT... But not for Motlop!! Motlop must stay!!
With Wells being a little older(32 in 2017) he gives us ready made bonus Mid in 2017 for nothing other than salary.
Hanley and Hartlett are much the same... Show AA quality sometimes and at others look like spuds.
But at 26-28 they can give us 3-4 quality years at least. Hartlett being my choice of the two, his best is AA quality.
As for Lin Jong (23), he intrigues me.... I think he has tremendous upside and multi positional value. He is a GEM IMO.

So just imagine will you... In a time and place not to far away, where our Midfield rotations will be..... That's 2017 right? Yes!!

P.Dangerfield, J.Selwood, B.Deledio, D.Wells, S.Selwood, H.Hartlett, M.Duncan, J.Caddy, S.Menegola, L.Jong, S.Motlop.

Those 4 players would have a dramatic and positive effect on the 2017 season.

But in reality just picking up 2 of the 4 will improve what really is a B+ midfield.

This allows C.Guthrie and Blitz to transition into our defensive 6 to replace Boris, Mackie and Lonners.

With another pre season put into Cockatoo, Lang, Kolo, Linc, Cowan, Gregson and the return of Thurlow.

Anyway thats my take... Enjoy the Grand Final Boys!

I can't wait for 2017!

Wait for it...I can guarantee a but, should've, could've or would've coming your way. Wrapped up and sold to you as a 'fact'.

Selwood is widely lauded and admired throughout the football world for his heart, sheer will, courage, and readiness to throw his body into the contest, yet he's been tagged - by one of our own of all people - as a 'downhill skier', which is as insulting and contemptuous a term you can give a player??

Geez.

No offense to the OP but some of the crap that I've read in this thread is as putrid as I've ever witnessed on BF.

This thread is just plain shit without any informed football knowledge at all.
In what way Stanley or have you had a few sherbets?

Oh mate, I read the first few posts last night and then read the last few just now and they're absolutely shithouse!

Look, I'm not going to single out any posts because there is nothing to be gained by getting into personal shit fights and I honestly can't be bothered but some people just need to get a grip on reality and understand that we did a lot more right than what we did wrong this season...

And of course I've had a few sherbets! It's GF night you fool! :D

Well raise your glass and toast Gaz Sr who's celebrating his 55th Birthday today. :beermug:

midfield isnt really the problem anyway its the game plan and the structure

backline is too slow so it doesnt link up well with the midfield
slow movement into the midfield means transition from midfield to forwardline sucks

the lack of forward structure means the midfield generally bomb it long to hawkins

ideally you'd have the inside mids feeding it out to duncan/motlop/cowan/guthrie who then hit up leading targets

Joel Selwood. Joel ******* Selwood a downhill skier.
Now I've heard it all.
Yeah there's no way he's that. Danger for instance comes in and out of games as far as an accountability aspect, which I don't think of Joel.

I probably would agree with Ross' comment just as far as stoppages. But the same could be said of any attacking, get-on-my-back clearance players. They can't win them all, and by default when the ball goes to another position he can't be in two places at once.

One factor that we lack in midfield is variety there's a sameness about the mids .
We need a polished left footer not only only do they kick better they turn at different angles look at some of the teams with left midfields I'm sure there are more examples it's the one thing missing .

Dogs : Bont,Lachie Hunter,McCrae,Liba
Swans: Jack,Hannebery,Mitchell
Eagles: Priddis,Gaff
Magpies: Pendlebury,Crisp
Giants:SHIEL,
Demons: Dom Tyson,Viney
