Here are some ideas to counter act the strong Crows midfield :

- Byron on Mcleod - Try outrunning him! Although ability to outrun game in middle may be a little concern, Byron has speed strength and evry other facet to worry McLeod. Lets make him accountable for someone, it will put pressure on him to be accountable. Also, his skills are suspect at time during kicking, so the thought of Byron behind him will add that little bit more pressure.

- Simpson on Ricciuto - Pretty standard reasons, does a good job when under pressure and can match the Roo for marking strength.
- Grant and Goodwin - Both rack the possessions up and may go against each other. The need for the Roos to man up ther above two and the Crows need to man Harvey will see those three match ups as determining centre square combos. I would be happy with both Grant and Simmo sharing responsibilities at times for either Ricciuto or Goodwin.
- Stenglein on Harvey - If he isn't still seeing stars, he will pick up Harvey. Just a run with role, maybe even Goodwin if they feel like being defensive.

OTHERS:
- Motlop could take McLeod when going forward. This gives Byron a break and the chance to do damage in the forward line.
- King is another that could take either 3 of the Crows main guys. Probably form half back or on the wing.
- Rawlings is my last option for a run with role. I would probably let him run with one of the Crows lesser known wingman, but could be used in bursts on the top 3.

Overall, we could have a fairly good combo in the middle. McLeod is the main one to target I think.
I will look at the forward line tomorrow, where ex-Roos take on legendary Roos and a debutant may hold the key when Byron is away.

Pickett on McLeod - in my view, a must. We have no other players who have the pace to match him (even Byron may come up a little sdeficient in comparison), and his aggression is vital to combat a player who is hard and fast at the ball, and has quick and smart disposal to boot. The one percenters (smothers, etc.) are potentially very important in curtailing a player of McLeod's ability.
Physical presnce is also important- a good bruising (but legal) bump could unsettle McLeod like it did Matera a few weeks ago, and the other thing that might happen is Pickett plays forward with McLeod following him to an isolated situation in defence (as was the case with Matera). Pickett would have a likely strength advantage, and it's worth a shot in order to take Adelaide's key playmaker out of the middle.

Ricciuto - With our defenders having Adelaide's measure (with regard to individual key forwards), Ricciuto may be used as a half-forward who makes the dummy lead in place of Welsh/Biglands/Beinke. Archer would be the man to play the defensive role on him, as Ricciuto's strength is a powerful weapon, and he wil tear up any smaller, weaker blokes. If Ricciuto plays in the midfield, I would personally go for Cochrane. He might be a *******, but he;s worth a punt on Ricciuto, because the Crows' skipepr is a physically powerful man and we need someone with a bit of size and legspeed to mind him. Simpson wold get found out for strength, and Grant would get found out for pace (and probably strength too). Clayton is a no-go zone.

Goodwin - well, if we carry Clayton into yet another game, he might as well be given a job. Goodwin isn't overly quick or all that strong, so physically Clayton can match him. Goodwin specialisies in clearing the ball from the centre, in whch case Simpson would be the only other logical option.

Stenglein - in my opinion, is likely to play a defensive role on David King.

Top Post mate,
I would pay $100 bucks to see Byron and Macca after eachother for 4 quarters, what a showdown that would be!

Byron on McLeod just isn't going to happen... Dennis has never played him in a run-with role in the midfield, and I doubt he will start now. I suspect that Pickett doesn't have the endurance to run out a full match there... besides which he will create nightmares for the Crows in our forward line.

Grant has played on McLeod a few times in the past. It seems like a mismatch, because he doesn't really have the pace to go with him, but he is damaging enough with the ball that it gives McCleod something to worry about. I remember seeing him pick up twelve kicks in the first quarter playing on McLeod at the G in '98 (I think)... it was the one we won with a dodgy free in the last minute.

that being said, perhaps Cochrane will be given the job if the match comittee decides on a negating role. He did the job on Lappin and Schwass, who are similar quick damaging players (admittedly not quite in the same form as AM at the moment)

If Cochrane starts on McLeod, expect me to start a thread akin to Malibu's at around 11.15 pm on Friday night. It will be called "Why the hell was McLeod allowed to get 60 possessions in a game?"

If Cochrane is on the ground for more than a quarter, I think we should complain. His lack of ability in the air will see him miss out on Ricciuto. Simpson, as he does with Buckley, can match players in the air by leaping across, that is why he will get the job.
QUESTION - Can anyone believe that Cochrane was a state CHF!!!!!!!!!!!!
