Midfielders in the draft

I guess the reality is that if a club thinks it's midfield is okay, and has other areas that need development, then the midfield is possibly the quickest to turn around. If you can get the right player they can have an immediate impact, and if we get either Muston, Palmer, Ebert or Selwood, then I would expect that they will get significant game time next season. As we have seen with players like Murphy, it can take a fair bit longer for bigger players.

Look at our midfield stocks compared to our key defensive stocks. I wouldn't be at all suprised if the club had Alex Rance, Tom Collier, Steve Gaertner etc at the top of the wish list.

2 players in 5 years, thats one hell of a CV.

They are also non proven. Ibbo 1 game (outside drift around sort at the moment). Peake I like but still lightweight and dodgy kick/poise.

Dunn and Browne haven't worked out (yet??) - what other mids have been drafted?

Murphy + Tarrant for Farren Ray + Pick 5. Gives us pick 5 and 6 in the draft (roughly), plus another midfield option with some pace.

Murphy for Ray = Bad deal.

We traded Tarrant for a top ten pick in what was billed as a super draft along with Medhurst 12 months ago, we aren't going to trade him for a top ten pick 12 months later.

Tarrant has been disappointing, but he'll be here next year. Accept it.

i think murphy has some currency, particularly to richmond. i also think hasleby has some currency.

Richmond won't trade pick 2 for Murphy, if Spud is in yellow and black next year it'll be for pick 18/19, which certainly won't get us Palmer/Masten.

I'll be extreeeeemely surprised if Hasleby isn't at the club next season.

That's what I'm worried about, I'll be gutted if we hang onto our first pick then pass on Masten/Palmer/Ebert to select another KPP or HBF. :(

I just hope phil smart doesnt screw up like he has in the past.

Our list management team have until now traded for their immediate needs and instructed Phil Smart to draft the best available player. It's not his fault that Icke and Connolly didn't instruct him to draft more midfielders.

If a player like Drum, who Smart had as a top six selection, is available at pick ten he is doing his job to reccomend that we draft him. It is up to his superiors to say no, we don't need another 190cm utility, who do you rate as the best of the available midfielders (Richard Douglas, Darren Pfeiffer, Travis Varcoe, Matt Riggio, Andrew Swallow, Shaun Higgins).

You forgot Nathan Jones, Shannon Hurn and Beau Muston. :p

From memory, Smart rated Drum at three in terms of talent and stated so before the draft started. I remember him saying that people go so negative about Drum because he was a medium defender, but that people overlooked the fact that he was talented at what he did. It was rumored that Smart rated Pendlebury and Mitchell Clark above Drum.

I don't know that I believe all this about CC/Ike instructing people to get particular types or not. I still remember Smart on the radio 6pr saying that he thought Freo needed a power forward and a well built utility, three or so weeks before trade week. Then up pop Tarrant and Solomon!

Phil Smart certainly doesn't play a role in list management, that's just a coincidence. He's not in a position of power, he watches games and videos and makes a recommendation.

If you consistantly drafted an average of 2 good quick midfielders every 5 years there wouldn't be an issue. But drafting is an innaccurate science. our problem is not the immediate past. It is the medium term where players such as Schammer, Dunn, Browne, Haines and even further back, Walker, have not achieved as much as hoped.

Just FYI, there's a Phantom Draft on the D&T board, and the midfielders so far have gone like this:

2 - Cotchin (onballer)
3 - Morton (wing/utility)
5 - Masten (onballer)
6 - Palmer (onballer)
9 - Rioli (onballer/FP)
10 - Grimes (centre/utility)
15 - Veszpremi (onballer)
16 - Maric (onballer/FP)
17 - Selwood (onballer)
22 - Greenwood (onballer)
23 - Ward (onballer)
24 - Reid (onballer)
25 - Browne (onballer)
27 - McGinnity (onballer)
30 - Normington (onballer)
34 - Motlop (onballer)
36 - Dangerfiled (onballer)

KP defenders have gone:
8 - Rance
13 - Myers (KP def / utility)
18 - Pears
20 - Gaertner
33 - McKenna

Just a trial run of the BigFooty Phantom Draft (;)), so no need to take it too seriously, but some of these guys watch a lot of underage footy, and know a bit about what they are talking about. Interesting to see how they rate it.
