Peter Garrett announces Australian Tour + ‘A Version of Now’ pre-order available now
May 30, 2016 | News

Peter Garrett has just announced an intimate Australian tour in support of his forthcoming solo album ‘A Version of Now’.

These special gigs will see Peter playing small clubs and theatres for the first time since Midnight Oil’s gritty pub rock era. Limited tickets are available from today for people who have signed up to his mailing listor who have liked Midnight Oil’s Facebook page. All remaining tickets will go on sale to the general public on Friday June 3. Venue and ticketing information is listed below.

On the forthcoming tour, Peter said: “Getting up close and physical is what live performance is all about. Being back on stage and playing these new songs will be a blast.”

Throughout this tour, the iconic frontman will be backed by an all-star band that he’s christened ‘The Alter Egos’. The line-up features nearly all of the people who played on Peter’s forthcoming solo album ‘A Version of Now’– Martin Rotsey from the Oils on guitar, Mark Wilson from Jet on bass andPeter Luscombe (Rockwiz, Paul Kelly, Black Sorrows) on drums. Rosa Morgan (Red Ghost) will also join on keyboards, stepping in for The Jezabels’ Heather Shannon who played on the recordings but is currently unable to tour.

Acclaimed WA blues rock singer-songwriterAbbe May will be pulling a double shift on the ‘A Version of Now’ Tour. In addition to completing The Alter Egos line-up onstage as they play with Peter Garrett, Abbe will also beopening each gig with a powerful solo set on all dates except Darwin.

Darwin fans will see Abbe perform as part of The Alter Egos as Peter will be supported by the NT’s own Gawurra whose stunning debut album ‘Ratja Yaliyali’ has been commanding national attention.

This tour announcement coincides with the release of a new Peter Garrett track – ‘Great White Shark’ – which debuted on Australian radio and iTunes this morning. You can hear it here.

This raucous second taste of his forthcoming solo album was spawned some time ago, as Peter explains: “Great White Shark originally surfaced when working with my Oils band mates Martin and Jim but it was never recorded as it just didn’t fit at the time. It was filed away in the back of my mind as a track I’d felt I’d like to revisit and ended up working well with what was happening in the studio sessions for my solo album.”

Most of the songs on ‘A Version of Now’ were composed recently as Peter penned his autobiography.

Although this tune largely hails from an earlier era, its themes of physical and moral extinction remain all too relevant. The song’s raw sounds and sentiments dovetail well with the rest of the new album as its main rallying cry makes abundantly clear … “I want to be whole and I want to be free!”

‘A Version of Now’ will be released globally in digital formats on July 15. A CD and LP will also be released in Australia on that date. As of today the album can be pre-ordered via all good music retailers, and those who pre-order via iTunes will immediately receive the songs ‘Tall Trees’ and ‘Great White Shark’.

A documentary about the album’s creation will screen on MAX on Tuesday July 15 at 9.30pm. Meanwhile dates and venues for the ‘A Version of Now’ tour are outlined below. All shows are presented by Triple M, MAX and Select Music.

So is the whole band getting back to tour or has it seemed to have fallen through?
Happening next year. Rob Hirst has also said he expects they will record new music as well, but whether that happens before or after the shows I don't know.

It began with a cheeky, soul, pop and bluesy performance by one Abbie May which worked a treatt at our small theatre.

Peter and the Alter Ego's (including Abbie) came out and launched into a very engaging set of songs including the bulk of Pete's "A Version of Now" album featuring "Great White Shark" which I believe was not played at Perth I stand to be corrected, "Tall Trees" a fine mixture of new tuns with a couple of real Oil's sounding crackers. The wordy "It Still Matters" worked so much better live.

A great rendition of the Skyhooks "Ego is Not A Dirty Word" was quite apt as was Divinyls "Back to the Wall" The band provided a great blues for Pete who whipped out the harmonica for the cover "Got My Mojo Workin".

A rousing "The Dead Heart" got the suprisingly small in number yet appreciative crowd mainly consisting of the arty/theatre going crowd, the 40's to 60's working intellectuals, a strong and proud local Aboriginal contingent and a couple of bogans at heart (me and a couple of mates) dancing in the aisles, the song having a special connection to one and all.

The Alter Ego's supported him well - Martin Rotsey provided that familiar rhythmic guitar with Jet's Mark Wilson thudding away on the bass, Peter Luscombe behind the drum kit. Rosa Morgan from Red Ghost provided the keyboards and backing vocals on some songs standing in for Heather Shannon who was unable to tour.

A superb intimate theatre show and great warm up for Pete who has not forgotten all his go to dance moods and looked very into his performance sung well and was extremely engaging, what you look for in a performer, cannot wait for the Oil's 2017 shows which he hinted at towards the shows close.

I saw them on their farewell tour in 2002 (?)

It was the second concert I'd ever been to (jebediah at the uni bar was the first), it was at the local leagues club in Bathurst, and it was f***ing awesome. Couldn't believe Garrett's presence. It was like watching a giant.

Hurst didn't even have a proper kit for the first half a dozen songs, just a snare set up above a floor tom and one cymbal - still sounded amazing. Sadly they split a few months later from memory.

Today is my wife's birthday. I have spent it watching the press conference announcing the tour, listened to all of Place without a postcard while texting my mate in Brisbane to organise crashing at his place so I can go to the gigs in the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane, while he comes down for the Adelaide show. It feels more like my birthday then hers.

Busting to get tickets for this. Only saw them a couple times early on in the piece. (Kooyong in about '85 and Festival Hall '87ish). Will look to try and get tix for Hanging Rock & the Music Bowl.

I've been lucky and old enough to have seen them live in sell outs 3 times over the years. The last time was at a packed out Palace Theatre in St Kilda, and man did that joint just absolutely go off that night.
believe me if you get a chance to catch this act live then get on it.

I'm gonna rank albums then EP's, just my opinion.

1. Place without a Postcard
2. Head Injuries
3. Powderworks/Midnight Oil/Blue Album
4. 10,9,8...
5. Red Sails

I have never listened to any of the later albums so cannot comment.

1. Bird Noises
2. Species Deceases

Unaware of any others but Bird Noises is one of the great EP's of all time regardless of band.

Scream in Blue one of the great live albums ever

Was one of Australia's premier live acts and political voices but how can Garrett be taken seriously now after his busted arse political career.

I respect Garrett massively for doing the labour thing. Think of it this way, he was leader of the NDP and nothing ever happened - he didn't achieve a thing. He played the Exon gig in the middle of NYC and nothing much came of it. He tried everything outside the machine and still today nothing happens to fix the environment or social issues he promotes. So he tried from inside the machine and sure still nothing happened but at least he trying absolutely everything to make a difference.

It is easy to throw stones from the cheap seats but I don't see many who have tried harder and tried more ways to force some sort of change

He could have gone as an independent???? Oakeshott and Windsor got shitloads done for their communities. As a Labor/Left aligned independent during the Labor years 07-13 he could have done bucketloads.

Garrett sold his soul to Labor to get a cheap seat in parliament.

I'm a massive fan of the band but he lost me years ago.

Gee I remember seeing the Oils in circa 2002 at the Hallam Hotel and The Forum. Bloody brilliant. They also played Wave Aid & Sound Relief too. Awesome live band.
