There were some players not putting in enough according to Jeans. Hawks premiers 1978 missed finals 1979-81. Jeans was astonished that a team so talented with players like Lethal, Knights, Scott, Tuck, Ayres, Mew, Dipper, OHalloran, Wallace et al couldn’t even make finals. Dont think Moncrieff was the problem, but once Jeans made up his mind to reinvigorate the team, Gladys was on the outer.
You're pretty much on the money, Hawthorn was a super talented side and a pair of seasons finishing 10-12 in '79-80 (and 13-9 and out of the finals in '81) is rather underperforming. They made up for it big time from '83 to '91 of course with 5 Flags and three GF defeats in those nine seasons.

I just checked a game Rd 20 1980, where at VFL park North beat the Hawks 135-79. That Hawthorn team had names such as Geoff Ablett, Eade, Hendrie, Martello, Mew, Moncrieff, K.Moore, C.Robertson, Russo, Scott, Tuck and Wallace. Now some of those were only in their 3rd-4th season but that's an imposing list of future and current hawthorn premiership names.

Very good theory indeed with Jeans, and certainly within about 18 months of taking over the Hawks became the absolute powerhouse they proved to be for the next decade.

Spoke to Gladys last year said Allan Jeans had concerns at the lack of run in the forward line with him and Leigh Matthews there. And it was obvious to him that he was the one to go. Also had a young Dermott Brereton and Michael Byrne was in good form then and could also play Ruck

Hawthorn's "one wood" over the last 65 years has been its assembly line of elite forwards.

We've not always had the strongest midfields or the best defence (and we've almost never had elite rucks) but we've pretty consistently had top tier forwards.

(It's funny how some teams seem to produce certain types consistently or have a particularly strong line over multiple generations e.g. Carlton long produced great defenders, Brisbane with elite mids, etc.)

For Hawthorn, it's always been forwards...

First there was John Peck who won 3 straight Colemans in awful sides (including a spoon side), then there was
Peter Hudson, with the highest goals per game average in history...
You had Gladys Moncrieff - who kicked 600+ goals, with large chunks of his career at full back
and of course Leigh Matthews, who kicked 900+ goals, with the majority of his career spent at rover
Then there was Jason Dunstall, who kicked 1250+ goals and is one of the greatest of all time
We also had Dermott Brereton, an elite, big game CHF..

With these guys supported by the likes of Gary Buckenara, Darren Jarman and a bunch of others.

Then we've had the modern era, with ..

Lance Franklin, 1000+ goals and the best of this generation
Jarryd Roughead, 600+ goals playing in a variety of positions
Breust and Gunston with 500+ goals each
Rioli as well.

(We even had to let Gary Ablett Snr go ;) ).

It's no wonder a player like Moncrieff gets forgotten about so easily....
