The 2026 Winter Olympics kick off on Wednesday the 4th of February, with the Opening Ceremony to be held early Saturday morning Australia time. This year the games will be held in Milano Cortina in Italy. It's the 4th time Italy has hosted, and it's the 35 edition of the Winter Games.

The games can be watched on Nine, 9Now and Stan Sport.

Australia will be sending it's second largest team of 53 athletes, with 27 debuting at their first Winter Olympics. The team includes 5 teenagers.

Will be a decent chance at medals - so far this season, 11 have claimed a total of 26 medals at World Cup level, including 13 golds.

Three athletes - Jakara Anthony (moguls), Adam Lambert (snowboard cross) and Indra Brown (freeski park and pipe) — currently lead their respective World Cup standings, while four others - Josie Baff (snowboard cross), Matt Graham (moguls), Val Guseli (snowboard park and pipe) and Bree Walker (monobob) - are second.

Let's bring home the gold.

Aussie! Aussie! Aussie!

Italy can do the funniest thing and deny the American athletes a visa restriction.

Don’t allow them into the country.

Surprised there wasn't already a thread for this.

Always a couple of medal chances for Australia in women's aerials too.

Was just checking out the australian broadcast and streaming arrangements for these olympics and it appears most of it is going to be paywalled on stan sport with only highlights and recaps on 9now. The only free live coverage will be one free to air channel at a time, 9 or 9gem when shit like mafs is on. So basically whatever events 9 choose to show in between all their usual annoying australian centric interviews, recaps and replays of completed events. So disappointing.
Like to go from every sport being live and free on 9now for Paris to literally nothing for this is a joke. Literally had more live and free options on secondary free to air channels before streaming was even took off.

Even Seven had every event live on 7+.
Meanwhile it's not much better for the Winter Paralympics either - still being relegated to a hour long highlights package with no live streaming for events

Minor COVID scare for team Australia ahead of the games:
Two staff members working with Australia's Winter Olympic team have tested positive to COVID-19.
The individuals, who will not be competing at the 25th edition of the Olympic Winter Games, were symptomatic and tested positive on January 28 and 31, with measures in place to contain any possible spread of infection.

crap, that kills any interest I had

Same. Can't see many people subscribing to stan just for winter olympics. To go from the last few Olympics all being live and free with full replays to pretty much just whatever 9 decides to show live will kill so much interest

While there are still two days to go until the Opening Ceremony, as always a number of events will begin before the games officially commence.

Each morning I'll provide a short write up of what has happened (both with our Aussie athletes, as well as those from around the world), as well as what the day ahead will look like, and what are the events to watch.

Tonight Nine will have a preview program following MAFS (delayed if you are not in the AEDT timezone), with live coverage of events commencing at 5am on 9Gem, and running until 7am.

Aussie's in action - unfortunately, there will only be one Australian in action tonight:
  • 5am - Alexandra Ferlazzo - Luge Men's Singles (Training Session) - Four-time Olympian, 5th 2024 World Championships, 13th at Winterberg World Cup. Has maintained a consistent ranking of around 19-12 since the 2022 Games.
What else to keep an eye on:
There is not a lot on overall, with the opening stages of Mixed Doubles Curling (beings just after 5am), and a training session for the Men's Alpine Skiing.

Let's bring it on!

Aussie! Aussie! Aussie!
