Greg Miller of North is pissed about Bell going to freo next year, claiming he is only going for the money, and that bell owes the club more than that.

What a hypocrite, he didn't mind getting Leigh Colbert from Geelong now did he? He has a big cry because he is losing a player, but doesn't mind gaining them does he. North has got their just deserts in my opinion, poaching Colbert, who has turned out to be a dud, and losing a star player in Peter Bell.

This is the end of the North dynasty, much like West Coast's.

Your argument's a little wonky as Colbert
didn't leave for more money, did he???

Greg Miller has to the biggest whinger from any club, couple that with his pie in the sky ideas for his disaster of a club he goes down as my most despised official.

I'm counting the days until North goes under and Greg Miller will be the key man responsible for their demise.

Hope you can count REAL high HH!! There seems to be a misconception that North are going to "fall over" soon. There are teams in far greater peril than North (but of course no team should be allowed to collapse but you never know what the AFL have planned!). I wouldn't say they're going gangbusters but they are thriving quite nicely off field, particularly when compared to others, and when their new social club complex opens early next year, well let's just say that a lot of you will be very disappointed at its success!

Groucho, I'll leave North's future alone but please tell me how YOU feel about Greg Miller. And no bullshit, do you think all his initiatives have been good for the club?

No... Happy Hawker tell us exactly what you think of North's future... Don't drop the ball after that statement...

and I am quite happy to have Greg Miller in charge of our administration... most clubs would die for him... and don't forget he got CAREY and LONGMIRE to the club... HE CAN STAY FOR EVER...

BTW... for the last time...

Don't blame North because Geelong had the nerve to offer its captain a performance based contract... and he decided to leave... any captain would leave if offered that deal...

So let me get this right... Its North fault we put together a good offer after Leigh decided to leave Geelong...

Got to love the Miller-man.
He is a great club official and one of the few you can just ring up and talk to about any queries or suggestions for the club. He is a great listener and never just considers the supporters to be dills.
He has personally gone a long way to providing the club with much success in the past 8 years through initiatives during and before this time.
You would just love to have him wouldnt you............

Although Miller has done a lot of great things for the Roos (inc. 2 premierships) do you honestly think that the Roos will be able to sustain themselves when and if they do have a lean patch. At some games this year they had less than 10,000 people at their games and with the turnover needed at around 17 mill. will the Roos be able to keep raising that sort of money.
I am not having a go at the Roos or anything like that but am genuinely asking what your opinion on this is? How did you guys feel when they wore the orange for the day?

It is hard to see all 16 clubs being able to survive under the current format.

FreoRules(what?)... who did we play on Mothers day??? when 8000 turned up... When you guys grow up and become a real team people in Melbourne will come out and watch you play...

In regards to "Orange Day", most of the fans took to it enthusiastically. I guess that our fans are so used to change, and keep in mind that our club management always keeps the members informed on what's going on, that we're pretty supportive of most things they do to keep the club going.

As for the finances, well, footy clubs are amazingly durable creatures. It will really depend on how much money the AFL can get out of the TV rights and how it gets distributed. Programming will be another issue with home teams getting the gate...we'll make money if we get Essendon at the G and we're the home team, but we'll lose money if they give us (and no disrespect to Freo here) Freo at the G. We're a pretty innovative club, so I'm sure we'll be still kicking around and aggrivating the Essendon fans

for at least the next ten years.

Rooboy thats still more than Watched North in Sydney. Face it no one likes Freo and North.

Glass houses at work here FreoRules

Fremantle can barely crack 20,000 at any of their home games, in fact I think I am right in believing they have the lowest home crowd average in the AFL ?

Don't sneer at other clubs because they have had some small crowds this year - your crowds are consistently tiny, year in year out.

Yeah true, but why did other teams draw bigger crowds against Freo in Melbourne? For example Collingwood Vs Freo at Colonial Stadium (YOUR HOME GROUND) there was a crowd of around 34,000 I believe.

Glasshousses have nothing to do with it. yes our crowds are low and we are not a team which will draw a large crowd but we do make a profit each year, with the exception of this year when we put 3.8m into our new changerooms.
It has nothing to do with us, I was merely asking whether the Roos will be able to sustain their place in the AFL if they do have a lean period as you are struggling to get a crowd at the moment, bar the loyal supporters and members. it is obvious that the Sydney experiment did not work, and therefore extra funding which the club has will be dissolved. (no team will make it Sydney unless they relocate there on a permanent basis)
Hawthorn are playing a game in Tasmania this year to boost funds and hopefully memberships, are the Roos looking to go to Canberra still?
Rooboy 96, I thought you were above the petty slinging match and I was merely asking for your point of view rather than joining in the bandwagon slagging us off? We have enough ppl doing that now.
If you would like to give your unbiased opinion I would like to hear it as I am looking at a viability study into the AFL and would like to hear your views, not cheap shots which anybody can throw.

Freo rules,

Greg Miller is the best administrator in the business - bar none.

Re Orange day - most supporters were quite happy and thought it was a novelty with the exception of McGuire, who could not get his head around the fact that North wore black shorts. Horror of horrors, only the "Pies wear black. He completely overlooked the fact that it was North's home game and the Pies should have worn white shorts.

How many teams (Essendon and Collingwood) included would have a big crowd at a match in Sydney, when the Sydney Harbour Bridge was closed to traffic because a crowd of 500,000 people held a march for Reconciliation March. I am sick to death of hearing of North's poor crowd in Sydney (under 10,000) BUT....not one mention in the same breath of the rather large crowd marching over the bridge. Traffic would be choatic.

Still leaves a few hundred thousand that don't have to cross the bridge, I'm sick of excuses WHY are we so disliked??

I don't agree with everything Greg Miller says and does but everyone must agree that everything he does, he does to advance the club.

The supposedly failed Sydney venture which is receiving so much flack from so many quarters brought in new sponsors and much needed cash. It even brought in additional members (5000 odd interstate members mostly from NSW area).

The only tragic element to the 'Orange' match was that we lost the game. Those fans that turned up to Colonial really got into the spirit of things with orange ribbons in their hair and orange jumpers, hats etc. You wouldn't want to see it happen too often but it was a bit of fun on the day AND, once again, it did bring the money.

I could go on to justify other things that people have raised as critism but I don't want to ramble on for too long. Suffice to say that Greg Miller is a person who very much cares about our club and us, the supporters. He values our imput. He personally responds to correspondence sent to him.

I know that he's hard at work at the club from early morning to late evenings most days - well above and beyond the call of duty.

I know he was there late in the night handing out goodies and encouragement in 1996, 1998 and 1999 to the thousands of fans queing up for grand final tickets.

I know that he does not deserve the critism he's currently receiving.

He does suffer a little from foot in mouth disease but there's no doubting where his loyalties lie...unlike many others.

Let me just say one thing first, I DO NOT hope that North Melbourne goes under.

Greg Miller has performed a miraculous act in achieving the success in the 90's but with all of this on field success the team should have legions of supporters. It's support in Melbourne is very poor(along with some other Melbourne clubs) and this had led them to Sydney which in principle sounds a great idea but has been an unqualified disaster. Miller has sent North to Sydney with his greatest motivation being money and not what he purports, the expansion of the code in NSW. Miller is so desperate that he does'nt really care how many turn up in Sydney as long as North Melbourne gets paid for the 'experiment'. He is completely unaware about how much damage he is doing to the code in NSW, just that he gets the handout from the AFL to play there.

As I have already stated before I just can't understand what Miller is talking about when he calls North 'Australias Team'. Does he really think that by dragging in a few thousand supporters from every state will work. AFL is a tribal sport, Miller's 'Australias Team' concept just makes no damn sense at all.

Miller must have exhausted himself over the last few years thinking up new ideas to save his team but there is just no more support to be gained in Melbourne, and for all the excuses the Sydney experiment has got to end if not for North for the competition.

I know it's hard to accept but with the cost of running a club going through the roof, player payments etc. clubs like North will find it impossible to survive as they are.

BTW don't rely on TV rights to save North, it's up to the AFL where the money goes so if people are correct about the AFL reagrding them wanting to kill off Melbourne clubs.......well need I say more.

A couple of quick points

If Miller was solely focused on the money rather than spectators why would he pull the pin on the last Sydney game this year (against the Saints) and move it back to Colonial - resulting in a loss of AFL support for that particular game.

And HH you of all people should know that sustained on field success does not necessarily translate to off field support - the Hawks had one of the most successful period in the league and are mid table (only marginally above NM) in member numbers

Finally I'm very happy with the performance of Greg Miller at the Kangas - the innovations that he has put in place that are immediately bagged by all and sundry:

Friday night games (North struggle to get a Friday night home game due to most other teams wanting to play at night)

Playing home games interstate (FOUR other teams will do this next year - including the Hawks - still waiting for the media to get stuck in to these teams as much as the Kangas got!)

As Miller said he would like the Kangas to gain a "tradition of innovation"

And finally - at least he isn't sitting on his arse doing nothing and taking gutless potshots at other clubs!!!

Cheers

Gonzo

FreoRules(I don't think so) I don't know what you want me to say...

North have never had a large following... I remember in the early nineties we had about 3000 members... now we have over 25000 members... only 2000 less then Collingwood who in the early nineties had over 25000 members...

North have always struggled off the field... you can go back to 1920 when Essendon shafted us and stole all our champion VFA players... 1925 when we entered the league but were not allowed any recruiting zones or Essendon would lose out... a little bit different to now (Sydney and Brisbane have priority picks in their locality)... who knows why???
We had been down for so long prior to the 70s everyone pittied us "poor old North Melbourne, no premierships, no brownlows, no leading goalkickers, poor old North Melbourne"... a bit like everyone pittied Fitzroy before they died (merge whatever)...

I remember the 70s just... people were so happy for North... that they had a chance to be successful...

The problem is they become too successful oin the field... and the only thing people can pick on them for now is crowd attendances... so be it...

Crap !! the 70's were most supporters saying that you bastards bought a premiership. You bought anybody that moved and these mercenaries got it for you. Bit like Colbert and Co.

Rooboy96

Noone is denying the on-field success of the Roos teams, what I am asking about is whether the Roos will still be able to generate the cash-flow needed to stay in the competition.
As for crowds, we may only get around 20,000 at games but they are mostly Freo supporters not bumped up by other clubs supporters. If north go through a poor period will they get enough supporters of other clubs to come to the game to make the Roos stay viable. That is what I am asking? Can the Roos stay in the competition in the next 10 years. It has nothing to do with whose crowds are bigger I am merely asking for an answer. If you can't that is fine.
