Milne V Daicos

plenty of people kicked big bags while he was in his prime. We are now and have been for a couple of years in an era where it is becoming obsolete for players to kick a big bag. This is about comparing Daicos and Milne seems to me like your voting for Milne. Weirdo o_Oo_O
Kicking 100 goals a season is almost unheard of today. Milne kicked 575 goals mainly during 00s which has got to be respected hate him or not.

It's a good effort but the thread and article was about Milne vs Daicos and there is no comparison.

First thing Milne is not a better footballer than Daicos. Second thing its wrong to dismiss Milnes goal kicking feats in a era dominated by defensive structures and zones. The same as its wrong to judge Cloke Riewoldt Franklin v forward of the late 80's early 90's.
Exactly. Well said. If the thread started like this with comments like these there would be more respect around here for comments thrown around.

Anyone that kicks over 500 afl senior goals is "more than a good effort."

There's been plenty of 'good' players kick 500 goals or more. Brian Taylor, Michael Moncrieff, John Longmire, Michael O'Loughlin and Peter Sumich among others. None of which, like Milne, are all time greats of the game.

Daics is without question.

The footy gods were with Daicos, and against Milne.

I dont get why everyone always focuses on that bounce yet never the crazy one just before which was equally as freakish

Which one?

Which one?
Right at the start of the clip. Slightly less of a right angle but still, it was pretty unlucky that the ball got anywhere near the goalsquare

I guess that's just the footy gods trolling him.

Good point, could've quite easily gone out of bounds.
Thank goodness it didn't, we wouldn't have the chance to flog them the following week:D

I think that's the point most people are missing, Milne like him or loath him was a great small forward. Milne kicked 575 goals in an era were kicking big bags every week almost became obsolete.

Yes he was a permenant small forward in an era where permenant small forwards didnt really exist. In the end StKilda lost two flags due to lack of depth, ie the bottom six werent good enough and many of the top 16 were inflexible. Milnes inability to play midfield was symtomatic of that lack of depth...as was the inability of the StKilda mids to kick goals.. Collingwoods fleet of goal kicking midfilders was the difference...as was Geelongs the year prior.

Milne's 575 came from a career as a small forward. He never played anywhere else. His career also coinsided with another couple of handy StKilda forwards Stewie Lowe and Nick Reiwoldt. So Milne had everything going for him as a forward.
In 2005 he kicked an amazing 60 goals as a small forward from 24 games.

Peter Daicos didn't play as a small forward until 3 years into his career. He was a centreman and then suffered knee and foot injuries that limited his ability to run as a midfielder. So the majority of his goals came in the second half of his career. He played in Collingwood sides that rarely included power forwards (until an injured BT came to Collingwood) and was in fact a key forward himself (albeit a 180cm key forward!!)
In 1990 Daics kicked a lazy 97 goals but he also kicked over 70 goals in a season twice before that.

Case closed....AFL's next comparison:

Jezza V's Jason Wilde
Lockett V's John Bourke
Mathews V's Matty Ryan
Ablett snr V's Patty Karnesis

Like comparing Dennis Bergkamp to Archie Thompson tbh.

Macedonian Marvel all the way.

Stephen Milne is the best small forward to ever play the game*

*If the game is only played during the regular season, at Etihad, under the roof, against crap sides on a Saturday night...

And the fact that Milne played 275 games to Daics' 250... Daics had a better goals per game average.

There is not one aspect of Milne's game that was better than the Marvel's. Not even close..

Daicos was a midfielder for most of his early career, only later did he become a permanent forward but I'd say Daicos was one of the deadliest small forwards ever, I didn't see Leigh Matthews but he seems to have Daicos covered. Gary Ablett Snr was the comparison at the time.

I agree with you.. not sure how it relates to my post though
