I was concerned that you guys let him play on. It was clear from the shape of the face that it wasn't just an eye injury that had blown up (as your coach said after the game). Hope he recovers soon!

Lyon that he felt he had to protect him and did take him off ats some stage (Milne himself apparently did not want to come off), but that he had the medical clearance to send him back on after having been assessed by the club doctor.

I don't see Lyon as someone who would risk the health and wellbeing of a player for a win in a football game. I really don't think that he would have allowed Milne to play without the ok from the medical staff.

Well then I'd check the medical staff's credentials! Seriously, every man and his dog could see that the cheek was misshapen, and anyone with an ounce of common sense would know it wasn't as a result of an eye that puffed up. They are damned lucky he wasn't involved in another clash.

Milne's Odyssey close to ending

THE SAINTS will have to wait for further medical assessment on Stephen Milne’s cheekbone before they find out whether he is a chance in featuring in this weekend’s crunch clash against fifth-placed Adelaide.

Milne was forced to take a road trip home from
Perth after he was diagnosed with a small crack in his right cheekbone. The forward was driven to Adelaide where he got the Melbourne bound train and should arrive home on Wednesday night.

Milne suffered the fracture in a first quarter collision with Freo’s Antoni Grover but bravely played out the match.

St Kilda's vice-captain Lenny Hayes said the team is waiting on scans before assessing exactly where Milne is at with the injury.

“When the swelling goes down, they’ll probably do a bit of further investigation and scans to see where he’s at, so I think he’ll probably find out in the next few days,” Lenny Hayes said.

“He said that he’s icing up the eye a fair bit and his face. But he said he’s feeling pretty good.”

More than anything Hayes said Milne was looking forward to returning home after the grueling trip.

“It’s been a pretty long trip for him. I’m pretty sure he’s looking forward to getting back and sleeping in his own bed tonight.”

Injured midfielder Luke Ball said he had also been in contact with Milne and admitted that the usually vocal forward was a little quieter than usual.

“I got a little text from him this morning saying that he was on the train and sick of travelling a bit. He didn’t sound too happy… It’s probably the quietest you’re going to get him with his injury,” he laughed.

But Ball said his heroics in playing on after sustaining the injury had set a precedent for the rest of the team.

“It sets a standard for the rest of the group and just shows that you can play through adversity. If it’s good enough for Milney, it’s good enough for all of us so it certainly doesn’t go unnoticed.”

And then you get a slightly different report from over the border :

Pesky Saint ruled out

Article from: The Advertiser
August 20, 2008 12:30am

ADELAIDE coach Neil Craig can rest a little easier knowing he need not plan to quell St Kilda forward Stephen Milne on Sunday.

The Saints pesky goalsneak has been ruled out of their season-defining clash with the Crows at Telstra Dome after fracturing his cheekbone on Sunday.

So what are you trying to say? He's "pesky"? Don't think the quality folk from the Advertiser should be putting pen to paper at 12.30am.
