I personally think its a gamble I would take, as its the opportunity to get more elite talent at the club.
Whether WCE see it that way is another story.[/quote]

Thanks for clarifying this.

I agree with you that its a gamble, as Brown is a proven performer and a well liked team mate, but also a gamble that may pay great dividends in the future (or be a complete flop). Like you though I too would make that trade if the call was mine.

I wouldnt do the deal. It's not because i dont rate hogan or martin as i rate them both very highly. Hogan has the talent to be just about anything. However i also wouldnt be picking up a kid with our first rounder this year either. We get knocked out today our first rounder is pick 16 in the draft. Thats a good pick. We should be in the ear of potential players who can improve us right now. You have to give something good to get something good. Pick 16 won't get us a superstar but it could definitely fill a hole in our list and get a guaranteed best 22 player. Someone like wellingham. Thats not to say go hard for wellingham as he's just an example but its what he is that is important. He's a player ranked in a top sides 8-15 bracket that fills a need for us, can still improve, is attainable and a big improvement on whoever he would displace from the side. Offer a good 3 year contract at around 1.2 mill with incentive potential to kick that up to 1.5 or so. It's significantly more than what he'll get at collingwood. Even if we had to give up stevens as well. It's a direct upgrade, essentially just swapping one player for another and it improves us now, rather than 3-5 years down the track.

Cox, Kerr and Glass and even Embley to an extent are club champions and great players who have given their all to the club. They deserve a shot at a title now, not have the chance of it frittered away for the future. Fools and Losers either live in the past or hope for the future. Winners take the shot and make it happen now. The other thing i think people are forgetting is there is a chance we could lose lynch. Now while lynch is no star he is a very good utility and more importantly he's a hardened key position player. Do we really want to lose 2 AFL level key position players right in the middle of our chance to win a premiership? Cox in particular at the end of the season is likely to be a 6 time all australian, he's also well and truly in with a very good shot of a second best and fairest. He's the greatest ruckman of his time, the best since madden and up there with the best of all time. I really think we owe it to these older guys to give it our best shot now.

Lastly we are a conservative club, we are also a very successful club and either way i'll back the club in to do what is in the clubs best interest, i just really think the best interest is in shoring up our list for now rather than trading for the future. Also take a long hard look at alex silvagni, going for state league talent thats highly likely what we'll end up with if we lose brown and thats our cover. Do you really want to go into a finals match with one of glass or emac injured while having to rely on a guy like that to hold a forward?

Very well reasoned alternate view and a good illustration of the overall dilemma faced by our recruiters in whether to draft/trade for now or build for the future.

Back our boys in and build for the future like all smart clubs do.

A situation like Fremantle in 05/06 can easily be avoided. They won no flag and sold out their future.

If the club can find someone who is a genuine best 22 player that actually improves us, I would be genuinely surprised.

Fremantle's complete lack of young KPP talent is well documented and it's because of their drafting that they had a medium tall on a beast of a forward.

Freo desperately needed a decent CHF last night. Pav looked like he was restricted with his ankle / achilles and Mayne did very well but after these two they simply lacked marking power up forward. Cloke or Gumbelton to Freo is what they need. Gumbelton + Goddard would be their best result.

Eagles have serious depth with tall forwards / ruck forwards, even with Lynch gone. We have shown how well Cox and Naitanui can rest forward and we have McInnes plus Lycett coming through and McGovern really improving and good overhead as well.

We should be adding the best mid we can find and if Lynch goes another project ruckman.

This is a silly statement. We nabbed a superstar with Pick 26 a few years back. Smart recruiters can pick up potential stars with every pick they use.

The one thing that's yet to be discussed is if Mitch Brown goes to GWS, will vonn be prepared to go orange and grey?

Every player picked is a potential star although they don't always turn out that way. Even the smart recruiters have their share of misses and ours are no exception

I've gone black and white for Nathan, in conjunction with other reasons. In fact I'm wearing the Collingwood scarf as I type. Don't board ban me - It's all worsfolds fault he didn't include Mitch otherwise I'd have two scarves!

Serious for a second, I can see Sydney making a play for him. Talented KP lacking opportunities, it the sort of player Sydney love and would turn around.

I think you'd have a meltdown.

no1bankteller, I should of been more clear it would be brown and probaly our first pick to get that second minidraft pick.
GWS want a key KPD and brown is one they have targeted.

It will be a hard sell if WCE go for it, as Brown does love Perth, and is Glass's natural replacement when he retires.

if Brown has been targeted then WCE should hold the aces ..

Jesse Hogan stats from todays preliminary final vs East Fremantle.

24 possessions, 10 marks, 3 tackles, 2 hitouts, 4 goals straight.
