Laquon Treadwell survives Viking purge, for now

The Vikings wasted no time in getting rid of one of the goats of Sunday’s tie-that-feels-like-a-loss at Lambeau Field. But with kicker Daniel Carlson gone, receiver Laquon Treadwell remains.

The status of the 2016 first-round pick as the No. 3 receiver should be in danger, given that Treadwell had multiple key drops again on Sunday, including one that squirted through his hands late in the fourth quarter, resulting in an interception that allowed the Packers to push the margin to eight, forcing the final, game-tying drive.

The fact that Treadwell had been clinging to the No. 3 spot behind Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen (or Thielen and Diggs) speaks to depth issues that arise when a team pays out big contracts to multiple key players on both sides of the ball. If either Diggs or Thielen get injured, the Vikings will have a mess at the receiver position.

So why not just cut Treadwell? At one level, they Vikings probably still hope to justify the decision to draft him. Then there’s the fact that his contract is guaranteed for 2018, keeping the Vikings on the hook for the full amount of his $1.35 million salary, whether he’s on the team or not.

Regardless, the addition of Aldrick Robinson shows that the Vikings hope to upgrade at the position. The fact that they added someone who could be had for a one-year minimum deal underscores the reality that they lack the financial flexibility to afford a luxury like Dez Bryant, who surely would otherwise be at the top of their list of potential free-agent acquisitions.

The key is that Treadwell has a guaranteed Contract based on the fact he was a 1st round pick. It simply would cost the Vikings too much dead money to cut him as he is Contract runs through 2019. The cost to cut Treadwell is still north of $5 million.

There's no doubt he's a bust, but it looks like he'll continue with a role on special teams - he did look good as a gunner last year....

In other news the Vikings have re-signed DT Tom Johnson after he got cut by the Seahawks. The Seahawks were expecting to re-sign him but the Vikings pounced and will add him to the defensive rotations within the team.

With the addition of Kicker Dan Bailey and WR Aldrick Robinson the Vikings have waived WR Stacy Coley in addition to Kicker Daniel Carlson.

I'm pretty sure there's still one more cut to come as my current list of players (which includes Tom Johnson, Dan Bailey and Aldrick Robinson) has 54 on the roster.

ABC 5 reports Vikings DE Everson Griffen threatened to shoot someone at a Minneapolis hotel on Saturday.

The Vikings released a cryptic statement about an incident involving Griffen, and it appears as if this is what they were referencing. According to police reports, a person at Hotel Ivy was threatening to shoot someone during the day on Saturday. KSTP reports the person doing the threatening was Griffen. Police did not find a gun when they reported to the scene, and no one was arrested. Even so, this incident could land him in hot water with the league if it is true. Griffen was inactive on Sunday because of a knee injury.

Much more information on Everson Griffin (via the link in the tweet). Mental health is a serious issue and Griffen is clearly struggling at the moment. I hope he’s on the road to recovery soon.

Decent effort by the O to keep us 'in it' late against that show.

No surprises really as to where the work is needed, that being the O-Line and the Defence has been a bit slow to find itself again and adjust after teams took a look at it over the off season.

Lots thinking its Schizophrenia. Usually pops up at this age and the quotes from EG a pretty common with that illness

Average age of onset in men is 18

I read that from another site where they mentioned 30. Don't quote me on accuracy of that information though haha

We're a confidence team. If we get too far behind .500 then we will struggle. Top end quality will have us around the mark but our schedule is a b*tch. The Bills loss spooked us.

Two big mistakes took that one away. Props to the Saints D.

The Thielen fumble a real momentum killer before the half.

Defence did ok against that high powered offence tbh.

The real EG back and the defensive front turned up today. Hopefully they build on this one regardless of result.

Feels like we need the bye. Can't string all phases together at once. Get some form going at the back end and win the North, if we put it together we can make a run.

Yeah, will be good if some of these niggles can be cleared up too. Rhodes, Diggs, Barr, Sendejo, Compton. Cook just back now, EG second game back and looked good.

Tensions seem to be rising between Zimmer, DeFilippo

The Vikings have a winning record. Barely. They have a certain amount of offensive dysfunction. Clearly.

Coach Mike Zimmer, a defensive specialist who chooses to delegate the entirety of the offense to his offensive coordinator, has periodically complained about the fact that the Vikings too quickly abandon the running game. After Sunday’s 24-10 loss to the Patriots, Zimmer was at is again.

“What do you think you need to do to get the offense back to rolling a little bit better?” Zimmer was asked by reporters.

“Same thing I have been saying all year,” Zimmer said.

“Do you think you ran the ball enough?”

“No.”

At one level, it’s Zimmer’s own fault for treating the offense like an absentee landlord. Yes, his efforts on the defensive side of the ball have helped the Vikings become a top-level unit. But in an age of pinball offense, the fact that Zimmer isn’t involved at all with his own offense is becoming more and more glaring.

Here’s what else is becoming more and more glaring: The efforts of current offensive coordinator John DeFilippo to get a head-coaching job by dialing up plays aimed at generating more buzz that he’s a candidate to become a head coach as soon as 2019. It reminds me of the latter year of two of Hue Jackson’s prior tenure in Cincinnati? He was coming up with funky formations and trick plays as part of a not-so-subtle effort to become a head coach again.

It’s seems like DeFilippo may be doing something similar, showcasing his skills in designing and calling potentially explosive plays instead of relying as much as he should on a meat-and-potatoes approach.

It may not end well. In 2015, former Vikings offensive coordinator Norv Turner abruptly quit during the season. While DeFilippo surely will see it through (lest he jeopardize his presumed spot on the 2019 “A” list), Zimmer and DeFilippo need to develop a clear understanding as to how the offense will be implemented and executed for the rest of the year, even if it results in the kind of playoff run that could delay by a year or longer DeFilippo’s chance to get the promotion he so clearly covets.

The stories of a schism between DeFilippo and Zimmer are overblown IMO. The offensive woes of the Vikings can be traced to problems on the OL, injuries to Dalvin Cook, and a QB with a huge salary with a propensity to turn the ball over. There’s been plenty of chatter about the screen game, or the lack of a screen game, but the scribes conveniently forget that the OL is completely different this year and may not have the mobility required to execute the way the 2017 OL did.

The Minny media will always point to the drafting of Mike Hughes instead of a guard (Will Hernandez?) in the 1st round of the draft as the beginning of the end for the Vikings 2018 season, but that is with the considerable benefit of hindsight.

I'm not saying that the Vikings should have drafted Hernandez, but depth on the OL is an issue league wide and the Vikings have had three significant losses this year to injured reserve (Guard Nick Easton, who was a revelation last year; and Aviante Collins, who was showing signs of being a serviceable backup at Tackle), as well as retirement (Joe Berger who was the only starting quality centre/guard on the roster).

As a result of not taking a guard in the 1st round, the Vikings took Brian O'Neill in the second round. O'Neill was a developmental player who wasn't ready to start week one. O'Neill has since moved into a starting role, but that decision, and the loss of Nick Easton meant that Rashod Hill (who is a serviceable backup) had to start at right tackle and Mike Remmers was moved to right guard. Remmers has been a disaster a right guard.

The retirement of Joe Berger was addressed by the Vikings acquiring Tom Compton as a free agent, but I doubt the plan was for Compton to actually start. He's a serviceable backup, but definitely not starting material.

To summarise, the Vikings OL problems can all be traced to the guard position and that has caused problems with both the running game and the passing game. There's nothing worse than pressure up the middle for a quarterback and the inability to move the DL in the running game has seen the Vikings hamstrung in their offensive plans against teams with even a serviceable DL.

Vikings fired OC John DeFilippo.

The Vikings had big expectations on offense after signing Kirk Cousins this offseason, and they simply have not met them, especially as of late. The final straw was a disheartening loss to the Seahawks on Monday night in which Minnesota did not score until deep into garbage time. Considered an up-and-comer when the Vikings hired him, it will be interesting to see where DeFilippo lands once the coaching carousel starts spinning in January.

Desperation times for the Vikes, the putrid effort against Seattle was the last straw.
