Darnold vs McCarthy is an interesting one. It could be like a Drew Brees vs Phillip Rivers situation where they'll both do well but they're better off keeping the veteran. Or it could be like the Falcons trading Brett Favre where the kid goes on to become a superstar.

Or maybe it'll be like Derek Anderson vs Brady Quinn where they both suck next season 😂
 
Darnold has one good season in his career when his on a one year prove it deal.
If they choose him over McCarthy they better get great haul for jj and nail the picks and hope Darnold isn’t a one year wonder. Which I think he is.

Sort of a Vikings fan as a mate who moved here a few years ago from Canada is a mad Vikings fan and watch a few of their games with him.

Was on the Pats but that was only because they were my team playing my first NFL game, NFL 2k4 from memory.

Yeah no rush finding your team, it can change early on as you get to know the game, the teams, their philosophies and histories....very distinct compared to say AFL

From what my Canadian mate told me they have a very Melbourne vibe about them, except they haven't managed to snag a super bowl yet like we did in '21.

We used to have a thread matching AFL teams to NFL teams. It can change from decade to decade, and there are many different keys to how AFL-NFL teams could compare....colors, logo name, history, culture, location, style of play, etc.

Id say Melbourne and Geelong could be like Green Bay and Chicago (two old rivals, two of the early teams). Vikings started in the 1960's expansion team. Minnesota is a cold northern state, very picturesque with old architecture. Vikings are always a very good team, every decade. They seldom are bad. Just they've had a lot of rotten luck in the playoffs and Super Bowls. Very cruel luck. They're 0-4 in Super Bowls, last one made in the 70s. Vikings are usually a gritty defensive team but often has an aggressive attacking game too. The NFC North....Bears, Lions, Vikings, Packers....is a rivalry mainly based on very close locations. You could throw a blanket over those regions.

Vikings are so called because there was a lot of migration there from Scandanavians back in the early centuries of the US. Imo, Vikings have the absolute best helmet concepts in all of football....the Viking horns, so cool.

I havent been keeping up to date with the AFL for about 10 years so not sure.

You could perhaps liken Melbourne to Chicago. Similar colors (blue-red, blue-orange), similar uniform tradition (never change their look), Bears original founder basically also created the NFL in the 1920s.

You could maybe liken Vikings to Fremantle on colors, a losing record in Grand Finals. Fierce rivalry with West Coast like Vikings to Packers based on near-location.

Maybe you could also like Melbourne to the Chiefs. They too have generally always been a very good team with winning seasons every decade, they had early success in the 1960s, and then nothing only until recently, 60 years later, string of SB wins and losses, one of the best teams now, kinda like the Demons reaurgence a few years ago.

As you can see, there are many different keys that can be used.

I personally think -- dont try to associate an AFL team to an NFL team in picking one. Instead, just watch all the teams, and just see which team "speaks" to you most. It's ok if it's Vikings for now. It might or might not change as you watch games.
