I'd actually side with Jim on this one. I played footy from the mid 70s to around the mid 90s for a rough club in a pretty thuggish league and never heard that sort of sledging, not that it would have particularly worried me. A lot of my team mates would have feigned outrage just to give them an excuse to belt the shite out of someone.

My old man played 70's and i played 90's (and still do barely to this day). Comments about mums occurred infrequently enough. But as you say, people only got riled up so they could square up. Mum jokes have been around for years but they are inane in that they were generic. The best sledges have wit, not repitition.

Maybe because I am no longer any good (Hell I was never any good) but I don't hear as much sledging anymore.

I don't believe that to be the case. There's nothing to suggest this course would have deviated given Port Adelaide made an official complaint to the AFL. Everything else is personal positioning in regards to Lucy Cornes and what people consider acceptable on field conduct.

Will has apologised for his comments and realises that there are no excuses for his behaviour and accepts his 1 match ban.

Saw him mouth off at Bernie Vince in a game once. Don't know what was said, no Crows WAG felt the need to tell us via Twitter. Next time he got near the ball he got cleaned up. I reckon he was pretty quiet after that.


He hates both our SA clubs, and SA in general. Must have been picked on at Norwood Primary school by a kid in an SA Great Tshirt. But his verbal barbs only affect one of our clubs. He is all mouth, a bit of physicality shuts him up.

Port are just a classless side.

Any other team wouldn't have sooked about that.

In the last 3 years or so we've had 2 other well documented sledging cases where players have been suspended for going over the time. To say no other club would have 'sooked' about it therefore is pretty clearly false. As for Port being classless, way to absolve the blame from your club

How do you know, did you check all of the WAG's tweets? The fact that it was tweeted is a distant second to the fact that Will mouthed off inappropriately, has apologised for his actions and has been given a penalty by his club.

I think the McGrath reaction was reasonable and should not be critisized for not taking the joke. He was joking about the batter and brian lara when the batter shot back a comment regarding his wife. It is not the batters fault because he had no idea McGrath's wife was sick but what was a comment made in jest blew out of control. If the batter said anything at all different about anything I am sure McGrath would have played nicer.

Rubbish. McGrath - like others in the Australian team at the time - spent a good chunk of time dishing it out to the opposition and bragging that they were mentally fragile if they couldn't handle it. The second anyone gave it back to him he cried like a 5 year old. Bully is an apt description. Hypocrite is accurate too.

The "what happens on the field" mentality is quaint, but silly.

If people just concentrated on playing footy, we would all be better off.

Look at Duncan Ferguson who head butted an opponent while playing for Rangers years back. The ref and linesmen missed the incident but he was arrested and served 3 months in prison for assault. Crossing a white line does not absolve people from all responsiblity.
