I can't believe what constitutes an "issue" these days. When did sportsmen taking a picture holding a gun or telling a "your mumma" joke become worthy of disciplinary action?

So despite everything reported, you're running with this?

Man I thought Port Adelaide people were meant to be tough. ******* mob of whingers.

Despite everything reported? They can't print what was said.

If you literally think Minson said "I slept with your mum" and this is the result you cannot be thinking logically.

Of all the things Pearce has heard on the football field, tagged every game, he is refusing to accept Minsons sincere apology over a your momma retort? Your momma lines must be the first one taggers learn. If you think it was a your momma line then you are an idiot.

I don't know exactly what Minson said but I can assure you it was not "I slept with your mum last night" simply because it would be said that many times on the football field.

The half hour remark is openly being quoted on the radio now, albeit tidied up for mass consumption. Now the offensiveness can be showered on all mums within earshot of a radio. Nice work AFL.

What really is offensive about the remark though? Lots of middle aged women these days seem keen on the idea of becoming a cougar, so it can't be the age difference. The amount of time that was supposedly involved? Watch enough late night tv, especially on Fox, and you'll be bombarded with ads scientifically proving that 30 minutes is barely long enough for most women. If she is currently not in a relationship it can't be the horror of infidelity, so what could cause such a fuss?

Its a case of schoolyard taunts, nothing more, and should be treated as such and ignored rather than breathing life into it.

There's nothing quite like feigned indignation

Larry Bird was recently declared the best trash talker in the history of sport. Note the wittiness involved in his sledges. Quality player that knew how to get under his opponent's skin and quality person that knew where the line was drawn.
  • During the three-point shooting contest on All-Star Weekend 1986, Bird entered the locker room, looked around without saying a word, then finally said, "I want all of you to know I am winning this thing. I'm just looking around to see who's gonna finish up second." He won the shooting contest.
  • During one game on Christmas Day against the Indiana Pacers, before the game Bird told Chuck Person that he had a Christmas present waiting for him. During the game, when Person was on the bench, Bird shot a three-pointer on the baseline right in front of Person. Immediately after releasing the ball, Bird said to Person, "Merry ****ing Christmas!", and then the shot went in. This was no doubt inspired by Person (nicknamed the "Rifleman") stating prior to the game that "The Rifleman is Coming, and He's Going Bird Hunting."
  • Reggie Miller recalled his encounter with Larry Bird's legendary trash talking ability in his book I Love Being the Enemy. Reggie tried to disrupt Larry's concentration when he was shooting free throws late in a game. Larry glared at him, made the first free throw and said, "You got to be kidding me. Rook, I'm the best shooter in the league right now. In the league. Understand? And you're up here trying to say something?"[35] Then Larry buried the second free throw.
  • Late in a tied game against the Seattle SuperSonics, Bird told Supersonics forward Xavier McDaniel, who was guarding him, “I’m going to get [the ball] right here and I am going to bury it in your face.” As McDaniel remembers it, he responded by saying, “I know, I’ll be waiting.” After a timeout, Bird made two baseline cuts, then posted in the exact spot he had indicated to McDaniel, paused, turned, and made it in his face. He finished up the sequence by telling McDaniel, “I didn’t mean to leave two seconds on the clock.”[36][37]
  • On November 9, 1984, Bird was ejected along with Julius Erving in the third quarter after an on court scuffle. At the point of both ejections, Bird had outscored Erving 42 to 6. During the game, Bird had continuously informed Erving of their tallies with every chance he got to score. Bird denies this stating that it was teammate "M.L. (Carr) talking trash from the bench" during that game.[38] Eventually a shoving match ensued, then swings taken by both players, and finally a bench-clearing brawl.

My absolute favourite told by Denis Rodman. "'I would be all over him, trying to deny him the ball, and all Larry was doing was yelling at his teammates, I'm open! Hurry up before they notice nobody is guarding me!' Then he would stick an elbow in my jaw and stick the jumper in my face. Then he would start in on my coach, 'Coach you better get this guy out and send in somebody who's going to D me up, because it's too easy when I'm wide open like this.'"

In light of the AFL's strong and sensitive stance on respect for women, if you think Minson would have received just the 1 week if the r-word and language in the region of 'pinning her down' were used, then you read the play about as poorly as your players. He got a week for being a douche with a prior in questionable sledging - if your baseless assertions about stronger language were in play here, Minson would have been given a bare minimum 4 week holidayamd a hefty fine for his troubles.

Nothing? Maybe you should apologize for your comments then.

Being behind an alias does not mean you have carry on like an animal

Even if Pearce did report the incident he has done nothing wrong.

And the most relevant part:

Pearce said he was pleased his son made an official complaint, rather than leaving it on the field.
"He's standing his ground, someone has insulted his family and he's standing his ground - I'm very proud of him," he said.

So both Will and Picken are lying, as you think Pearce is not that thin skinned to have got upset at what's been said in the media?

The afl is getting sanitized to within an inch of its life. What will minson said was both stupid and juvenile and his inability to come up with something remotely witty is a poor reflection on his intelligence.

That Pearce would get "deeply" offended by such a pathetic throwaway line speaks volumes for his concentration or lack thereof.

The resulting media frenzy over such a trivial issue beggars belief that we focus so absurdly on the minutiae of the game at the expense of genuine football analysis by the so called football experts masquerading as journalists

FFs I ****ed your mum should not result in a bloke getting suspended

People who think it was something as simple as "I slept with your mum for half an hour" do not live in the real world. A "your mum" joke doesn't illicit that sort of reaction. Wake up.

Yes, of course Minson is lying. He's hardly going to come out and say "yeah sorry about all that stuff about raping your mum" when there is no conclusive evidence proving he said it. While it's ambiguous he can twiddle his thumbs while Bulldogs fans spin it as something relatively innocent and fire back at Pearce for being soft. If it had been caught on audio he'd have it being replayed for the rest of his involvement with the game and his name would be tarnished forever.

Picken is just being a good mate and trying to get him out of trouble. We'd probably all do the same for a close mate in the same situation wouldn't we?

If Pearce was thin skinned enough that a simple, garden variety "your mum" joke caused this sort of reaction, don't you think we'd have seen it a bit earlier given he's played 100 games and gets a hard tag every single week?

Other port supporters have said he has "small man syndrome" and is a "hothead" seems like a likely type to get riled up by sledges. How do you know what version is true or not? Answer is you don't

Has Pearce said that it was more than has been suggested?

Genuine question because I haven't read anything that it was more substantial other than your join the dots scenario that it must have been due to the reaction by Pearce

Are you slow? That isn't a direct quote.

The AFL has already confirmed that the complaint was lodged by an on-field umpire.

Pearce has had nothing to do with this apart from the stock standard "Important that W.Minson knows what he said was wrong..." blah blah blah bullshit that someone else has probably written up for him after the apology.

And again, it doesn't matter either way. Pearce has done nothing wrong and Minson is an idiot.

I'd probably care more if there wasn't the over-the-top, frenzied outcry.

Minson made a spur of the moment mistake and was a bit of a knobhead. Disappointing, sure.

To have this bloke attacked by all and sundry and have the media and AFL carry on as if he's a heinous monster is ridiculous.

A slap on the wrist is all that was required.

Maybe entry level stuff like "hack" works for most taggers, so maybe not.

maybe this time he just decided to stand up for himself instead of crying himself to sleep after a game.
