So, should that one have stayed on the field or not?
No, it shouldn't. Minson knew what he was saying in regard to that, so the sledge actually had some context. He knew Kane's son had heart problems and was in the hospital.
Saying something like "you're mum...etc" has absolutely no meaning, and is just a simple little rip at another player. I highly doubt Will knows Pearce's mum, so it had no meaning behind it.
If he does know his mum, and said something derogatory about her, then it would be different.

I think the McGrath reaction was reasonable and should not be critisized for not taking the joke. He was joking about the batter and brian lara when the batter shot back a comment regarding his wife. It is not the batters fault because he had no idea McGrath's wife was sick but what was a comment made in jest blew out of control. If the batter said anything at all different about anything I am sure McGrath would have played nicer.

I am not in the belief players should make any comments under any context about opposition players families as circumstances like the minson case can happen even though i doubt minson intended any of his comments to be taken offense. Knowledge is everything and if you dont have it dont assume a comment even in the most light hearted nature will be taken as intended.

McGrath was a douche. Deserved that serve from the West Indies player. If you are going to trash talk about homosexuality, then all bets are off. The fact the West Indies player knew nothing of his wife's condition makes it completely fair. You can't instigate, then sook. But McGrath was famous for that, especially when batsmen were getting the better of him.

Sledging is ok, but family members should be off limits - as should race and religion.

The bile I have seen directed at the Cornes family - mother & wife, here and in Bay 13 is nothing short of disgusting. These people are NOT fair game, they are not targets and most of the previous posters need to take a good long hard look at themselves. Pathetic really.

It's not about sexuality, it's about subservience. i.e. he was calling him a bitch, not a (insert derogatory term for a gay man). If you cant understand that then your a (insert flaccid penis reference).

Here we go again. I wonder if Pearce informed the umpire like Petterd did, or the umpire heard it himself and made the report?

Minson is known for being a truly horrific sledger. Very personal, very close to the line. Have heard him a couple of times and while I'm all for banter, he takes it far too far IMO.

Have zero time for him as a person

She shouldn't take her grievances to twitter then.

Sure thing bud. McGrath got what he deserved (with interest). Then dialed 000 for the Wahhhhmbulance. Soft as.

Hasn't he been done by the AFL before. Wasn't racism but something close. He seems to be the classic "where there's smoke" scenario.

Minson may be intelligent, but he's clearly a tool. You don't have to be very creative to stay away from family, sexuality, race etc.

and sledging a guy about his seriously ill 5 year old son is the epitome of class

Was 5 years ago, he aplogised

What I found classless was the Port supporters blaming Charlie Sutton for poor ump calls.

The ol' switcherroo, minson is an idiot so we'll start up stuff about port supporters, way to go:thumbsdown:

It's obviously still a sore point though. Don't blame her really. What Will said back then crossed the line. Had nothing been said back then this would not have been plastered on twitter and wouldn't even have made a headline.

g
Your honestly telling the word that you would make the same comments even if you knew the situation. Thats just sick. thats just cold.

are you for real? so mcgrath can go open slather on the other bloke but he has to be careful of what he says back. Mcgrath started it, the other bloke finished it. it just goes to show what kind of a farkwit mcgrath was. dont forget he was remarried within months of her death. you may say thats no big deal, well it is if you react like he did after those comments

Not defending him, still had read of your gameday thread. Lots of "ghost of charlie sutton" calls well before this broke.

FFS, crap like this needs to be kept between the players.

Everyone has said things they would not have in different contexts, judging Minson in our context for things he said in the heat of battle is not fair.

Players drawing their own lines on things is a slippery slope, if everything that was said on the field was printed in the news it would be a cluster storm.

If I were a player I would deal with it between the players, getting the media involved is a quick fire way to lose the trust of the AFL community.

If someone says something rude to me at work I deal with it with them, if they don't want to deal with it you go to HR, you don't go straight to Today Tonight to have a cry about it, yeah sure they look bad but nobody trusts you anymore.

Agree with everything you said but I know it's an expression but geez footy aint war. The amount of commentators who use this expression shits me. Robbo is a constant offender!
