Gameplan definitely helps, especially with the Hawks at their best.

It wasn't the Hawks' game plan that improved their kicking skills. It was their kicking skills when they were drafted that made their game plan possible. If you can't kick we won't draft you. That was the list manager's mantra at Hawthorn.

working on his kicking has allowed him to be a regular member of one of the best teams in the AFL.
He contributes well in the GWS forward half, is capable of kicking a flat accurate pass over 30M and his set shot goal kicking is excellent now.
He was an awful kick early days at Freo, he is much better now.
I don't understand how anyone can try and make out you can't improve in this area.

It is disengenuous to claim his kicking skills have improved, rather he has learnt to play within his limitations. Like you say he goes for short smart options rather than make plays which are beyond him. Playing in a team like GWS by extension will also make any player appear better than they may be.

While Deboers decision making and football skills have improved alot since his juinor days, I wouldn't argue his kicking skills have that much at all.

Pages and pages on kicking skills and we are still none the wiser

And yet we have just drafted Mitch Crowden who is a terrific kick and elite handballer.
Being such a short man it highlights the fact it is all about technique and timing.
Take Nathan Wilson for example who appears to merely chip the ball yet it travels 55-60 metres.
I'm in the camp, if we want elite kicks , draft them.

Add as much sugar as you want but if you are born a lemon you will never be an orange.

So all we need to do is chase hawk players out of contract, what about the ones delisted? Apparently their entire list
are elite kicks.
Nothing to do with the coach, soccer style ball retention, breaking zones, uncontested play and creating time, space for
your teammates.
Contested football is messy, players under pressure do miss targets, players that can make time stand still, sidestep,
footy smarts look better with the ball.

Players have their kicking action recorded and the action assessed frame by frame early in pre season. Any problems are worked on by the kicking coach. I think that after years of this process the club would have a fair idea of whether the kicking action can be improved. I'm tipping that the ingrained bad habits are extremely hard to iron out in the limited time a player has to compete at the elite level and that the club has realised that the only way to go is to draft those with a reasonable kick.

Who's our kicking coach?

I agree with this too, but also the system you implement needs to take advantage. It is the balance between
contested/uncontested ball.
But targeting skills, footy smarts is definitely the right direction. The more Generals you have on the field the better.

Guerra apparently. Training is 5 days a week and all day. We only watch the main sessions . We have no idea what happens in doors and at the after noon sessions. To say that players aren't working on their kicking during the afternoon and indoor sessions doesn't make any sense when kicking is the most important part of the game. If a newly drafted player has a reasonable kick it stands to reason he has more chance of making the step to an elite kick.

Sounds like we're making progress. Hopefully we'll see some proof of this in their footskills this year.

It'd be good if one of the training watchers could catch one of these sessions. The media aren't interested and nor are the Freo social media team obviously. I'll try and catch one, it'd be interesting to see what they're doing.

Kicking is only one aspect of the game. Fyfe and Dangerfield show that it isn't even the most important. I think if we loaded up our side with our best kicks, nothing much would change in terms of win/loss. But take your best kicks and turn them into fitness monsters and you will improve.

I saw them "coaching" Brady Grey last year. They were working on a few things.

1) was making sure his hips were level when he was kicking - his hip was dropping as he was kicking.
2) making sure his leg action kicked straight through
and
3) something about where his opposite hand was going...

He was getting one-on-one coaching for about 40 minutes.

We had Kevin Ball a PhD biomechanist and specialist kicking analyst on the payroll more than a decade ago.
It won't be an area that's being neglected simply because we don't know what's happening.
I imagine there'll be an algorithm for the amount of time allocated to it individually.:p
We've also changed our recruiting focus.

Hey folks, please excuse the intrusion. My YouTube channel is running with a 'Who Finishes Higher?' series and we've made one for WC & Fremantle. I actually think this could be a pretty intriguing question for the upcoming season. I'll just leave it here:

Half of our team are Fremantle fans so there will be a fair bit of Fremantle content coming up I expect, so feel free to subscribe if you're interested in this sort of thing!

Cheers.

No I said, and I meant, his kicking skills have improved. He used to kick up and unders and a few flour bags. He is a much more flat and accurate kick and he is a reliable set shot from anywhere up to 40M. This is clear improvement.
Of course he can't kick as well as some players who have better mechanics but there has been clear improvement within his limitations.

Maybe the arcs weren't measured correctly but out at Cunderdin a couple of years back de Boer effortlessly slotted a set shot from 50 for Peel, took us quite by surprise.
Well I’m shocked, stunned and appalled.

What the hell were you doing in Cunderdin?

So with Barnaby's star quickly dimming, there appears to be a potential that a past Dockers coach may be acting Prime Minister in a number of weeks time while Turnbull is away. Hope he is better at running a country than coaching a footy club, though one does sound easier than the other.
