Lots of talk of our youngsters needing to get a run, so thought I'd have a go at listing our current B22 (inc. Mora - still hopeful) and see what transition might need to happen over the coming years. Would love to hear others' thoughts about our list management.

Overall I think we are looking pretty good:
  • We have 5-7 B22 players over 30 - with 4 being important cogs in our team (Johnson, Sandi, Mundy, Pav). Big losses when they do retire but the upside is a fair bit of cap space to spend on retention and recruitment.
  • We have another 6 players (27yo or over) we need to have replacements for in the coming years. I think we already have suitable replacements on our list already for all of them.
  • We probably need to keep Clarke, and for Apeness to come good (otherwise I can see us needing to rely on Hannath as more than a backup :() If Apeness comes good, he could be a true full forward type that can also be a backup ruck - which then frees up an extra spot and could have massive upside for us.
  • Pavlich is obviously going to be a big loss no matter what. Ideally we have to trade in a KPP to cover him (McCarthy or Hogan or Hooker as a swing man). Below I have put Ueber in just to have a name, but am also hoping he'll prove he is better than a rookie KPP in WAFL this year, because if he showed something he'd be a great 2nd or 3rd tall forward to throw in the mix over the coming years.
  • Johnson will also be a huge loss. Although with Hill, Sutcliffe, Sheridan, and hopefully Morabito playing HBF we perhaps don't need all of Johnson's skills as much in the future and can utilise a more traditional KPD instead? Can see A.Pearce and Collins slotting in nicely for Dawson and Johnson, although recruiting in a KPD like Hooker as well would be preferable.
  • Have no idea what is happening with Crozier but was hoping he'd be in a position to pressure for Mayne's spot this year. The other alternative is we have all of our forwards become better at applying pressure inside 50 like the Hawks and WC do.
  • Other than that I think we look pretty solid. In a few years I can possibly see our midfield (minus ruck) being even better than it is now: (Fyfe, Neale, Bennell, Hill, Sheridan, Blakely, Weller, Balic, Tucker).
  • Given our young depth already I'd be happy if we sold the farm in the next two drafts to get a couple of ready made KPPs. Another ruck might be helpful as well, depending on what Clarke/Apeness do this year.

The 3 amigos live there...
I know for sure Johnno doesn't live in Cockburn, he lives across the road from one of my mates, his kids go to my local school and i see him down at the oval sometimes, Cale Hookers mum also teaches at that school, I remember her letting us know when he got drafted all those years ago, he has certainly grown in stature since then!

Interesting data set. It seems Freo have a lot of rookie talent as well as veterans in the twilight stages but nothing in between. Kind of suspected as much.

hopefully they are a close family.

Pretty certain Johnson lives around Claremont/Cott. Know someone who dropped off his online orders. Beaut house, obviously.

Sandi lives in a very nice but reasonably modest place in Bicton. Pav around Johnno. Fyfey lives in that new development right across from South Beach, or at least he owns a big block of land there.
Hi I checked with Danyle Pearce at training today and he said that Johnno lived behind him but a bit further out. Danyle and Sonny as I was corrected recently by Gaskin live in Auburn Grove. So I don't know where you got the info that Johnno lives in Claremont/Cottesloe. ;);):thumbsu:

Yeah I get why a lot of analysts see it this way, but I think often they just look at the mix of ages rather than where each of the players is at in their career and in the context of the team. If you look at everything except our spine (ie midfield + flankers) we actually have a lot of proven talent in that perfect age demographic (that in between you speak of).

Sutcliffe (23)
Morabito (24)
Sheridan (22)
Hill (25)
Neale (22)
Fyfe (24)
Bennell (23)
Walters (25)

8 players 25 or under who are all B22, none of whom are rookies any more, and all with still their prime years to come. I think it's a pretty good core to continue building our team around. The only three B22 players who play in our midfield who are over 26 are Mundy (30), Barlow (28), and D.Pearce (29) who still have a few years and our rookies to replace them probably won't be rookies any more by the time they leave.

Pav might be the only key player we lose at the end of this season. Even if Taberner and Apeness don't show they can step up, we could go in with more speed over size with our forward 6 (Bennell, Walters, Weller, Langdon, Yarran, Crozier) - sure we may slide a bit but it'd be exciting football to watch still. But by 2018 we'd hopefully have traded in a couple of solid KPPs, our rookies will all have 2 years more experience and imo we should have our strongest list ever. I suspect that's the reason why Lyon has signed on until 2020 because he knows our list has some important holes to fill but a couple of good trades and free agency recruits could have us staying strong for the next 5 years.

Totally.

Next 5 years is make or break. Freo cannot simply waste that midfield core. As you say, picking up a few key position players to fill the obvious holes is going to be imperative over the next couple of seasons.

Quick Question
Is a fully fit morabito in our best 22?

If this tweet is correct, it is a bit of a sad indictment on our club that we either choose such bad coaches or we let outside influences control what happens within the club. Let's hope our club is now in a period of sustained stability (and success!)

Oh, and that is quite brilliant from Shane :p

Please, please let us be attending this one. It can't hurt to have a Cat-B rookie on our list.

We picked up Moller as a skinny rake, we tried to bulk him up, get him fit and teach him how to play football.

Most of the guys at these combines are athletic beasts so we would only be worrying about teaching them the game.

With some people suggesting Hannath play this weekend I think all avenues should be investigated for our future. Especially when there is little risk.
