Unlucky Miss Finland looks fit and ready to run

DAVID Hayes yesterday said his champion filly Miss Finland was "inviting herself to run" in tomorrow week's group 1 VRC Oaks after recovering quickly from her luckless Cox Plate effort.

Hayes, who will today pay-up for Danever and Gorky Park to run in Saturday's $1.5 million Victoria Derby, said he could have as many as five Oaks runners, headed by Miss Finland, after the Redoute's Choice filly continued to impress him in recent days with her recuperative powers.
"It seems she just doesn't feel a run," Hayes said yesterday. "Her recovery from the Cox Plate has been quite remarkable and although we won't make a final decision until Sunday, I think she'd be a 50-50 chance to run."

Hayes said that the benefit of starting Miss Finland in the VRC Oaks would be twofold. "It's a group 1 and she would have won group 1s at 1200 metres in the Golden Slipper and 2500 metres of the Oaks in just a seven-month period.

"Also, if she ran in the Oaks it would give us a better idea of what to aim her for in the future. If she ran and couldn't run the trip out, then we'd concentrate on making her a super miler (1600m)."

Miss Finland was an unlucky sixth in the Cox Plate as she fought for room and Hayes said the owners were keen to run her in the Oaks provided she could step-up in distance. "Miss Finland never really got the chance to make an effort (in the Cox Plate) and I know she should have won," said managing owner John Messara.

Thought this might be of interest to a few of you, especially given the heated debate this filly seems to cause!
Already in from $8 to $3 favourite on IAS...

So, will she win?

... now in to $2.60

Its not just horses that wear blinkers.Having piles of cash obviously doesnt mean you know anything about reading a race.

IMO she's got way more hope of winning an Oaks than a Cox Plate.
VRC Oaks is littered with milers who could beat their own age when the race became little more than a 200m sprint home.

I've been so undecided on this issue but heard Deane Lester on the radio this morning and he is firmly of the opinion that she was very unlucky. Also went on to say if she runs in the Oaks they won't get near her.

The distance is a worry, but if she gets it and even runs top 3 then she is an absolute superstar. She ran 2nd in a 1100m 2YO G1, won a 1200m 2YO G1 by 5 lengths, 2nd in a 1600m 2YO G1, then had the audacity to come back and beat one of the up and coming stars of Australian racing first up, then won the Thousand Guineas, runs well in a Cox plate now is looking to get 2500m. In awe of her at the moment, because not many Golden Slipper or Blue Diamond winners can go on and win Oaks and fly home in Cox Plates.
