Is it true that Nathan Buckley wanted to come to Nth Melb and the deal got mixed up and he went to collingwood ? Apart from Jade Rawlings who have the kangaroos missed out on trade/draft/rookie? Also didnt we chose M.Stevens instead of A.Davey ?

Buckley backed out of an agreement to come to the Kangaroos and at the time said he had changed his mind and went to Collingwood as he wanted to play finals footy. I laugh every day I watch him play. The NMFC was very bitter at the time that he had reneged on a handshake deal.

I dont know how much is urban myth or reality, but from what I remember Caroline Wilson had a story a few years back that when the North reps turned up to see him he wouldn't get off his bed (sounds like that scene from Jerry McGuire) to chat with them. As the 90's progressed the North boys would remind him of the 'two' (flags) that he missed.

I could be wrong...anyone else heard-read that story?

I haven't heard that but I like it and I am going to run with when I tell it to my half-wit mates who follow the Carringbush.

It may be hard to believe but Carlton was the other club to chase him and shock horror they were even going to produce their cheque book!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes I know its hard to believe that Carlton would resort to those measures!!

Im guessing there wasnt much coverage of North Melbourne kicking ass in 1993 on Brisbane TV.

IIRC The North Melbourne Football Club had an agreement with him paying Buckley a $20,000 sign on fee when he was playing in South Australia.

He then went to Brisbane in that dodgy deal that saw him at Collingwood the year after.

My recollection is that North and Bucks had an illegal agreement.
Buckley didn't want to go to the Bears, but agreed to and he was to be on traded next year to North.
The AFL found out and North got fined for draft tampering and were not allowed to draft him.
He then went to collingwood.

Surely some one could ask Archer or such for the real story.

I think you are confusing Nathan Buckley with Nathan Chapman.

Whatever the truth, I have always liked this version of events. Plus, when I tell it, I add the mayonnaise that we paid him $10k as a downpayment to come and when he reneged on the deal he kept the money:eek:.

One thing's for sure there was always bad blood onfield between the senior North boys (Carey, Arch, Stevo, Blakes, Pikey) and Buckley during the 90s.

We have discussed on here numerous times whether or not we would have won an extra flag or two if Buckley had stuck to his word.

I laugh too, GK. His burning ambition is to win a premiership and all he's managed is an individual award on GF day. What goes around, comes around.

This sounds about right from how i remember it. We were definately fined for our part in the shonky deal to get him. He then changed his mind on us, which is why the boys gave it to him throughout the 90's.

Well if it was written by Caroline Wilson it would have to be right wouldn't it?

She only deals in the truth doesn't she?

She wouldn't write anything that she couldn't personally prove would she? ;)

Dont even want to contemplate how many goals Wayne would of kicked with delivery from Buckley, who may be a ****wit on the field, but has easily the best footskills ive ever seen.
